Transition between 2019 and 2025 sarcopenia definitions by the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia in community-dwelling older adults.

BACKGROUND: The Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) has revised its diagnostic criteria over time, most recently in 2025. The impact of these updates on sarcopenia classification in real-world Asian populations has not been fully established. This study compared the characteristics and diagnostic transitions of community-dwelling older adults between the 2019 and 2025 definitions. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of a nationwide epidemiological study of community-dwelling Thai adults aged ≥ 60 years. Muscle mass was measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis, handgrip str

Association between the triglyceride-glucose-waist-to-height ratio and cardiovascular disease in Chinese adults with sarcopenia or probable sarcopenia.

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia, an age-related syndrome characterized by decreased muscle mass and performance, has been increasingly linked to high cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. In this study, sarcopenia and probable sarcopenia were diagnosed according to the Asian Working Group for Sarcopenia (AWGS) 2019 criteria. However, specific biomarkers underlying this association, such as the triglyceride-glucose-waist-to-height ratio (TyG-WHtR), remain unclear. METHODS: A cohort of 2,521 adults ≥45 years with sarcopenia or probable sarcopenia (2011-2020) were stratified by TyG-WHtR tertiles: T1 (≤4.3

Detecting sarcopenia in obesity: emerging new approaches.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Sarcopenic obesity is a likely common, but certainly underestimated obesity phenotype, with an important negative clinical impact. Its definition and diagnosis have however remained elusive until recently. RECENT FINDINGS: Substantial progress has been recently made in sarcopenic obesity diagnostic tools, with the first international consensus proposed by the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) and the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO). Very encouraging results emerge from initial implementation of the ESPEN-EASO algorithm. In a

Association between sarcopenia level and metabolic syndrome.

AIMS: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) increases the risk of diabetes mellitus (DM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), cancer, and mortality. Sarcopenia has been reported as a risk factor for MetS, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, and CVD. To date, the association between sarcopenia and MetS has been investigated. However, there have been few studies on the dose-response relationship between sarcopenia and MetS. We investigated the association between sarcopenia and the prevalence of MetS. We also aimed to analyze the dose-response relationship between skeletal muscle mass and the prevalence of MetS.

Exogenous Nucleotides Supplementation Attenuates Age-Related Sarcopenia.

BACKGROUND: Sarcopenia, an age-related clinical syndrome characterized by reduced skeletal muscle mass and strength, often leads to a loss of physical function. Nucleotides (NTs) supplementation is a potential strategy for preventing age-related sarcopenia as evidence suggests that NTs declined in muscles with aging, and 5'-CMP, 5'-UMP can mitigate muscle atrophy in C2C12 myotubes. This study aimed to investigate the effects of NTs supplementation on sarcopenia and its possible mechanism. METHODS: Senescence-accelerated mouse prone-8 (SAMP8) mice and C2C12 cells were used to assess the effect

Isolated Neck Extensor Myopathy Associated with Sarcopenia.

A 64-year-old woman with low body weight presented for treatment because of a 1-month history of progressively worsening headdrop. A physical examination revealed isolated weakness in the neck extensor muscles. Short T1 inversion recovery sequences revealed localized high signal intensity in the bilateral splenius capitis muscles, and needle electromyography revealed myopathic changes. Isolated neck extensor myopathy (INEM) secondary to sarcopenia was diagnosed. Steroid therapy was administered, which resulted in a significant improvement in the dropped head syndrome. This case highlights the

Late-onset primary muscle diseases mimicking sarcopenia.

Sarcopenia is an age-related loss of skeletal muscle mass, strength, and function that causes various health problems. In contrast, late-onset primary myopathies, which occur in the older population, are caused by a variety of factors, including genetic mutations, autoimmune processes, and metabolic abnormalities. Although sarcopenia and primary myopathy are two distinct disease processes, their symptoms can overlap, making differentiation challenging. The diagnostic criteria for sarcopenia have evolved over time, and various criteria have been proposed by expert groups. Late-onset primary mus

Lean nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and sarcopenia.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has become one of the most common chronic liver diseases in the world. The risk factor for NAFLD is often considered to be obesity, but it can also occur in people with lean type, which is defined as lean NAFLD. Lean NAFLD is commonly associated with sarcopenia, a progressive loss of muscle quantity and quality. The pathological features of lean NAFLD such as visceral obesity, insulin resistance, and metabolic inflammation are inducers of sarcopenia, whereas loss of muscle mass and function further exacerbates ectopic fat accumulation and lean NAFLD. Sarcopenia: an unsolved problem after hip fracture.

INTRODUCTION: Sarcopenia, loss of muscle mass and strength, leads to functional dependence and disability. To date, no study reported the postoperative change of sarcopenia prevalence after hip fractures. Thus, we assessed postoperative changes in the prevalence of osteoporosis and sarcopenia in hip fracture patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Among 1159 patients, who underwent surgery for low-energy hip fractures between May 2012 and December 2019, 224 patients (38 men and 186 women with a mean age of 76.8 ± 8.7 years) were studied with preoperative and follow-up dual-energy X-ray absorptiometr

Uremic Sarcopenia and Its Possible Nutritional Approach.

Uremic sarcopenia is a frequent condition present in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients and is characterized by reduced muscle mass, muscle strength and physical performance. Uremic sarcopenia is related to an increased risk of hospitalization and all-causes mortality. This pathological condition is caused not only by advanced age but also by others factors typical of CKD patients such as metabolic acidosis, hemodialysis therapy, low-grade inflammatory status and inadequate protein-energy intake. Currently, treatments available to ameliorate uremic sarcopenia include nutritional therapy (or

Aging, Osteo-Sarcopenia, and Musculoskeletal Mechano-Transduction.

The decline in the mass and function of bone and muscle is an inevitable consequence of healthy aging with early onset and accelerated decline in those with chronic disease. Termed osteo-sarcopenia, this condition predisposes the decreased activity, falls, low-energy fractures, and increased risk of co-morbid disease that leads to musculoskeletal frailty. The biology of osteo-sarcopenia is most understood in the context of systemic neuro-endocrine and immune/inflammatory alterations that drive inflammation, oxidative stress, reduced autophagy, and cellular senescence in the bone and muscle. Can initial sarcopenia affect poststroke rehabilitation outcome?

This study investigated the association between the presence of sarcopenia, measured by nonhemiplegic grip strength, and the level of functional recovery, measured by the modified Rankin Scale (mRS) at six months after stroke. We performed a retrospective cohort analysis of a prospectively maintained database of 194 hemiplegic poststroke patients, who had been admitted to the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine of a university-affiliated hospital. At 6 months after stroke, 72.2% of patients had mRS score >3, with more women (81.0% vs. 66.0%, p = 0.024) showing poor recovery. Both men (51.3%
