Information has been collected by questionnaire from parents and teachers of 928 deaf school children in South India. 374 of these children were examined during a 21-day visit to Madras. These findings are part of the outcome of the visit by a working party organised and financed by the Commonwealth Society for the Deaf. The Society has organised surveys of deafness in West Africa and Gambia. In this survey the causes of severe deafness in Madras have been identified. Virtually all survivors of a selective surgical treatment policy were reassessed. This paper describes the status of 43 of the 74 in ordinary schools. The small number placed in special units often had very low or deviant scores on all measures. Those fully integrated had scores insignificantly different from the controls on reading, spelling and mathematics, but had weaknesses of tests of hand function. The majority of fully integrated pupils were free from behaviour problems. The extent of physical handicap encountered among pupils in the ordinary school is described.

In 1976, an aggressive policy of integrating spina bifida children into ordinary schools was mounted in Sheffield. Analysis of the school placement pattern of 1235 patients, aged 2-29 years, showed an increase from 25% to 64% integrated for children born in 1968 and 1976, respectively. PURPOSE: There are well-established guidelines for the recording, transcription, and analysis of spontaneous oral language samples by researchers, educators, and speech pathologists. In contrast, there is presently no consensus regarding methods for the written documentation of sign language samples. The Handshape Analysis Recording Tool (HART) is an innovative method for documenting and analyzing word level samples of signed languages in real time.
