Ledderhose disease is disorder of the plantar aponeurosis. This disease is not so common and can be tackled with a surgical or conservative approach. A case of a 73-year-old man came to our attention who had a 26-year history of painless bilateral plantar nodules coalescing into an indurated mass. A review of the literature regarding bartonellosis or Carrion's disease in Colombia and Ecuador is presented, together with observations made by the author in areas of both countries from which the disease has been recorded. There is evidence from pre-Columbian artifacts that verruga peruana, the cutaneous form of the disease, was present in Ecuador at least 1,000 years prior to the arrival of Europeans. In cultural heritage, unaesthetic stains on carbonate stones due to their close contacts with metals are of concern for the preservation of sculptures, monumental facades and archeological finds of various origin and antiquities. Rust stains made up of various oxidized iron compounds are the most frequent forms of alteration. The presence of ferric iron on rust-stained marble surfaces was confirmed in previous studies and oriented the choice of the best cleaning method (based on complexing agents specific for ferric ions). To examine the relation between adverse pregnancy outcomes and work in cosmetology during pregnancy, we conducted a mail survey in North Carolina among 8,356 licensed female cosmetologists 22-36 years of age. Twenty-three patients who had a clavicular non-union were treated operatively at the Massachusetts General Hospital from 1974 to 1985. Twenty-one non-unions were the result of fracture and two, secondary to osteotomy. Twenty non-unions were located in the middle third of the clavicle, while three were in the lateral third.
