Sexual Self-Concept Discrepancies Mediate the Relation between Gender Dysphoria Sexual Esteem and Sexual Attitudes in Binary Transgender Individuals.

Sexual responding in transgender people has typically been investigated from a medical and functional perspective. Aligning with the biopsychosocial model, it is however equally important to consider psychological aspects of sexuality in this population. We propose that the Sexual Self-Concept (SSC) theory offers a valuable framework to understand (sexual) wellbeing in transgender people, while Self-Concept Discrepancy (SCD) theory could offer an explanation of the mechanisms underlying negative SSCs related to gender dysphoria. We investigated differences in SSC (consisting of sexual esteem,

The Link from Child Abuse to Dissociation: The Roles of Adult Disorganized Attachment, Self-Concept Clarity, and Reflective Functioning.

In this study of 624 adult participants from the general population (i.e., a community sample), we examine adult disorganized attachment, a construct that can now be measured on a self-report scale, and its linkage between child abuse to dissociation. Prior research has demonstrated that child abuse is positively associated with adult disorganized attachment, which in turn is linked to a variety of externalizing and internalizing behaviors (e.g., depression, anxiety) in adulthood. Based on the literature regarding self-concept, we further consider that having an integrated sense of self is cru

Adult Separation Anxiety Disorder Symptomology as a Risk Factor for Thin-Ideal Internalization: The Role of Self-Concept Clarity.

The study of when and how individuals compare themselves against standards has been an enduring focus for clinical and social psychology researchers in efforts to facilitate well-being and health. Our study focused on internalization of the societal thin-ideal standard for feminine attractiveness, a construct that has proven to be very important in women's psychological health. Although multiple adverse consequences of thin-ideal internalization have been documented, the understanding of variability in the extent of thin-ideal internalization across women (e.g., why do some women strongly inte

Understanding physical (in-) activity, overweight, and obesity in childhood: Effects of congruence between physical self-concept and motor competence.

Both the physical self-concept and actual motor competence are important for healthy future physical activity levels and consequently decrease overweight and obesity in childhood. However, children scoring high on motor competence do not necessarily report high levels of physical self-concept and vice versa, resulting in respective (in-) accuracy also referred to as (non-) veridicality. This study examines whether children's accuracy of physical self-concept is a meaningful predictive factor for their future physical activity. Motor competence, physical self-concept and physical activity were

Reconceptualizing causative factors and intervention strategies in the eating disorders: a shift from body image to self-concept impairments.

In this report, we argue that impairments in self-concept development function as a cognitive vulnerability that contributes to the formation of the eating disorders (ED) of anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN). More specifically we argue that impairments in development of the total collection of identities that comprise the self-concept contribute to body image disturbances which in turn, motivate the eating and body-weight attitudes and behaviors that characterize the disorders. First, we review current understandings of the role of body image disturbances in the ED and discuss lim

[Questionnaire for the assessment of the voice self-concept in a neurological practice : Applicability for the identification of patients with high consultation needs].

INTRODUCTION: Hoarseness occurs as a symptom of a multitude of neurological diseases. The importance people attribute to their voice differs greatly and it seems advisable to take this into account during consultation. The Questionnaire for the assessment of the voice self-concept (FESS) is able to measure this importance. The aim of this study was to determine the applicability of the FESS in a neurological and psychiatric medical practice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 556 patients of a neurological and psychiatic medical practice completed the FESS and the severity of hoarseness was mea

Attitudes, Knowledge, and Correlates of Self-Efficacy for the Provision of Safer Conception Counseling Among Ugandan HIV Providers.

High rates of childbearing desires (59%) and serodiscordant partnerships (50%) among people living with HIV (PHLA) in Uganda highlight the need for safer conception counseling (SCC). Provider attitudes about counseling PLHA on the use of safer conception methods (SCM) have been explored in qualitative studies, but published quantitative investigations are scarce. Data from 57 Ugandan providers were collected to examine providers' attitudes about childbearing among PLHA and engagement in discussions about childbearing, as well as their knowledge, interest, self-efficacy, and intentions to provi

Therapist verification of patient self-concepts as a responsive precondition for early alliance development and subsequent introject change.

OBJECTIVE: Social psychological research has indicated that people strive for self-consistent feedback and interactions, even if negative, to preserve the epistemic security of knowing themselves. Without such self-verification, any interpersonal exchange may become frustrated, anxiety-riddled, and at risk for deterioration. Thus, it may be important for therapists to meet patients' self-verification needs as a responsive precondition for early alliance establishment and development. We tested this hypothesis with patients receiving cognitive behavioral therapy for generalized anxiety disorder

Identity impairment and the eating disorders: content and organization of the self-concept in women with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa.

OBJECTIVE: The cognitive model of the self-concept was used to test the theoretical proposition that disturbances in overall identity development are a core vulnerability that lead to formation of a fat body weight self-definition and eating disorder symptomatology. METHOD: Structural properties of the self-concept, availability in memory of a fat body weight self-schema, and eating disordered attitudes and behaviours were measured in women with anorexia nervosa (AN) (n = 26), bulimia nervosa (BN) (n = 53) and controls (n = 32). RESULTS: Women with (AN) and (BN) had fewer positive and more n

Self-concept, family functioning and problem type: a replication and extension of a study of clinic and non-clinic adolescents.

PURPOSE: This study replicates and extends previous research into self-concept and perceptions of family functioning held by clinic and nonclinic adolescents (1). METHOD: Thirty-five male and 28 female adolescents who sought help from a school counselor for family problems (n = 26) and for educational problems (n = 37) formed the clinic group. A nonclinic group was formed by adolescents who had experienced the same problems but had not sought help. The two groups were matched in terms of age and sex of respondents. Respondents' were clustered into two groups based on their ratings of family f

Dissociative Experiences and Psychopathological Symptoms in a Non-Clinical Sample-Gender Differences and the Mediating Role of Self-Concept Clarity.

BACKGROUND: Dissociation is associated with multiple psychiatric disorders and mental health issues. However, there are some limitations in the existing studies, such as the predominant use of clinical samples and the lack of focus on potential mediators that can explain this relationship. Among the latter, an unclear self-concept may serve as a risk factor for many psychological disturbances, while a well-established self-concept may be a resilience factor. This study aimed to examine the gender differences among the variables, to test whether dissociative experiences are associated with psyc

Impact of wrist motion restriction on self-feeding: Compensatory strategies using an orthotic fixation model - A proof of concept study.

INTRODUCTION: Wrist range of motion (ROM) supports coordinated upper-limb function during self-feeding. Wrist restriction may induce proximal compensation, yet the kinematic consequences of discrete wrist positions remain underexplored. METHODS: Ten healthy young women performed a standardized eating task under four wrist positions: free (FP), palmar-flexed (PFP; 20°), intermediate (IP; 0°), and dorsiflexed (DFP; 20°). Upper-limb kinematics were recorded with a wearable IMU system (100 Hz). Discrete outcomes included maximum/minimum joint angles and event-based angles at the end of scooping a

Proof of Concept Study: Comparability of Microbiome Diversity in Self- and Physician-Collected HPV-Positive and HPV-Negative Cervicovaginal Samples.

Recent studies have revealed the impact of human papillomavirus (HPV) infections on the cervicovaginal microbiome; however, few have explored the utility of self-collected specimens (SCS) for microbiome detection, obtained using standardised methods for HPV testing. Here, we present a proof-of-concept analysis utilising Oxford Nanopore sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene in paired samples collected either by the patient using an Evalyn Brush or collected by a physician using liquid-based cytology (LBC). We found no significant differences in the α-diversity estimates between the SCS and LBC sample

Are General Anxiety, Reading Anxiety, and Reading Self-Concept Linked to Reading Skills Among Chinese Adolescents With and Without Dyslexia?

This study investigated the cross-sectional relationships between reading-related affective and cognitive factors and reading skills among adolescents with and without dyslexia. Participants were 120 Chinese-speaking eighth graders, including 60 adolescents with dyslexia and 60 typically developing adolescents from Hong Kong, China. Adolescents completed questionnaires on general anxiety, reading anxiety, and reading self-concept. They were also assessed on measures of rapid digit naming, verbal working memory, word reading, reading fluency, and reading comprehension. The results showed that r

Perfectionism predicts disordered eating and gambling via focused self-concept among those high in erroneous beliefs about their disordered behavior.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Perfectionism, a focused self-concept, and erroneous beliefs have been implicated in the development and maintenance of various disordered behaviors. However, researchers have yet to examine how these factors combine to explain different disordered behaviors. Herein, we addressed this gap and hypothesized a moderated-mediation model whereby perfectionism fosters the development of disordered behaviors through a focused self-concept. Critically, the effect of a focused self-concept on disordered behaviors is specific to people with erroneous beliefs about their disordered b

Instrumental musical self-concept in secondary school: the influence of socio-demographic and educational variables in non-specialised educational environments.

Musical self-concept is a relevant construct in education research, due to its relationship with motivational, academic, and contextual variables. Our study aimed to analyse the levels of musical self-concept among adolescents in secondary education and to examine the relationship between musical self-concept and several sociodemographic and educational variables within the framework of school music taught as a subject in Spain. Our sample consisted of 980 students ages 12-18, enrolled in secondary schools in the autonomous regions of Aragon and Navarra. For data collection, we used the "instr
