OBJECTIVE: This article aims to provide insights into men's accounts of infertility in the context of their intimate partnerships.
BACKGROUND: Although we are beginning to understand that men experience the emotions of infertility acutely, little is known about how such emotions impact on men's intimate partner relationships. Evidence suggests that infertility can impact intimate partner relationships (both positively and negatively), but there is a paucity of research around how men talk about such relationship impacts, and how they share their stories with other men. Men are often viewed as

BACKGROUND: Canavan Disease is a degenerative neurological condition resulting in a spongy deterioration of the brain. Much research has been conducted by the medical community regarding this condition, but little research can be found in the psychological literature.
METHOD: A review of the scientific literature related to Canavan Disease using the Psychinfo and PubMed databases was conducted covering a 5-year span from 2006 through 2011. Concurrently, a review of parent initiated topics found on the most popular Canavan Disease Internet discussion board was conducted for comparison purposes

Approximately half of patients with schizophrenia have a lifetime diagnosis of substance abuse disorders. These dual diagnosis patients are more likely to have poorer outcomes, including more severe psychiatric symptoms with increased hospitalizations, higher utilization of services and frequent homelessness. Assessment and treatment of dually diagnosed patients has evolved over the last twenty years. To date, the strongest evidence for effective management of dual diagnosis patients has been utilization of integrated treatment services, which combines both mental health and substance abuse tr

Managing issues of incontinence inevitably raises issues of sexuality. The complications of spina bifida that affect urinary and bowel function also affect sexual functioning. Routine review requires regular assessment of sexual issues while taking into account any special needs. This chapter highlights some of the common issues general practitioners need to know when treating people with spina bifida.

The Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis and Motor Neurone Disease (ALS/MND) Associations operate in the same financially constrained environment as everyone else. Increasing competition for limited health-care resources means that we are having to become better at competing for them on behalf of people affected by ALS/MND. This paper highlights the problems associated with making a case for ALS/MND, explores a range of method available to us, and illustrates using examples the recent activities undertaken by the UK MND Association.

PURPOSE: This study reports an innovative theory-driven approach for developing filmed peer support for cancer self-management. Peer support conventionally includes empathetic interaction between people with shared experiences. This unique study considers how to authentically communicate peer empathy in a one-way film narrative.
METHODS: We co-created a film based on phenomenological interviews with seven men who had volunteered to support other men by sharing their experiences of coping with prostate cancer. The film contributed to successful engagement with self-management. Interpretative p

Tobacco addiction is a major cause of excess mortality among individuals with severe mental illness (SMI). This study examined the impact of a brief group intervention developed for individuals with SMI that integrates evidence-based and recovery-oriented strategies to address tobacco addiction. The intervention was found to significantly decrease tobacco use and dependence and increase participants' sense of self-efficacy with respect to resisting the urge to smoke. These preliminary findings indicate that the Tobacco Addiction Recovery Program intervention is an effective, recovery-oriented

BACKGROUND: Many stroke survivors face disabilities that can have a substantial lifelong impact on both their own and their significant others' life situations. Online groups on social media can serve as forums for peer support among people sharing a common experience. However, there is limited knowledge about online peer-support groups for people living with the consequences of stroke that are initiated and managed by stroke survivors themselves.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to explore and describe what stroke survivors and their significant others share in posts and comments in a Fa

INTRODUCTION: Peer support can help navigate the isolation and psychological strain frequently experienced by youth living with chronic illness. Yet, data are lacking on the impact of providing support for youth living with mixed chronic conditions. We assessed the acceptability, feasibility and preliminary mental health impacts of a clinic-based peer support group for South African youth living with chronic illnesses, including HIV.
METHODS: This mixed-methods pilot study (September 2021-June 2022) enrolled 58 young patients, ages 13-24, at an urban hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. In-de

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: While it is well-known that caregiving can have adverse effects on the physical and mental health of informal caregivers and their families, caregivers of those with early-onset Alzheimer's Disease (EOAD) may have distinct needs. Little is written about the experiences of Latino caregivers of family members with EOAD, especially inherited forms. This study's objective was to explore the experiences and needs of Latino caregivers of persons with EOAD.
METHODS: Five focus group discussions (FGDs) were conducted among 27 informal caregivers of Latinos with EOAD who were re

OBJECTIVES: This study examines how rheumatoid arthritis (RA) peer support groups affect patients' lives and identifies the roles of these groups.
METHODS: Twelve RA patients from a peer support group participated in a focus group interview discussing reasons for joining, emotional changes, and disease management. Data were analysed using qualitative methods.
RESULTS: The analysis identified 65 codes, organized into 22 subcategories and synthesized into five pre- and five post-membership experience categories. The five pre-membership categories were: prolonged time for diagnosis, persistent

There is a growing recognition and need for more studies on groups practices and processes to develop greater insight into the helpful elements that may be distinctive to bereavement peer support groups for traumatic loss such as, suicide. BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a transdiagnostic behaviour that can be difficult to treat; to date no evidence based treatment for NSSI exists. Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) specifically targets the mechanisms thought to initiate and maintain NSSI, and thus appears a viable treatment option. The aims of the current study are to test the ability of MBCT to reduce the frequency and medical severity of NSSI, and explore the mechanisms by which MBCT exerts its effect.
METHODS/DESIGN: We will conduct a parallel group randomised controlled trial of Mindfulness Based Cog

Quality of life is defined by the World Health Organization as "individuals' perceptions of their position in life in the context of the culture and value systems in which they live and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards and concerns." Often overlooked in the past, it is nowadays considered, in a more holistic view of medicine, a decisive factor to understand the impact of diseases and improve the quality of medical care. Such evaluation is particularly relevant for dermatological diseases, because visibility of the lesions can significantly affect self-esteem and social relat

BACKGROUND: Literature of gambling addiction has become widespread in last years. Many studies were written about the vulnerability factors helping the development of addiction, theoretical models, comorbid problems and therapy possibilities. Currently there is no integrated theoretical model that could explain sufficiently the development and maintenance of pathological gambling. The treatment issue is also unresolved. Cognitive psychology is a dynamically developing field of psychology and good results are achieved in gambling treatment with applying cognitive techniques. Jeffrey Young's sch

AIMS: There is a need to explore the processes of social support and self-efficacy change over time among individuals in recovery homes, and to assess the extent to which residents remain abstinent, obtain and maintain employment, refrain from criminal activity, and utilize health care systems both while within the and after leaving such settings.
DESIGN: Residents were recruited and interviewed at an initial baseline phase and then re-interviewed at three subsequent 4-month intervals.
SETTING: Oxford Houses are recovery home residences for individuals with substance abuse and dependence pro
