Swallowing disorders (dysphagia) comprise a common cause of medical consultation and are defined as a subjective sensation of difficulty or abnormality of swallowing. In the initial step, a clear differentiation of dysphagia from odynophagia and globus sensation for further diagnostic procedures is mandatory. The careful questioning of patients symptoms and complaints is often helpful for the differentiation of oropharyngeal and esophageal dysphagia. Oropharyngeal dysphagia is mainly caused by neurological disorders (cerebral ischemia, Parkinson's disease, dementia) or local compression of mal

Pruritus, or itch, is a common sensation that causes a person to want to scratch. It is a complex process that may negatively impact quality of life and commonly occurs with skin disorders such as atopic dermatitis and urticaria. It could also be a symptom related to an underlying disease process such as cholestasis or hyperthyroidism, or simply be caused by dry skin, especially in the cold, winter months. Therapy is often aimed at eliminating the underlying cause first, followed by the management of the itchy sensation. Treatment may include prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) medications

During our everyday lives, we are confronted with a vast amount of information from several sensory modalities. This multisensory information needs to be appropriately integrated for us to effectively engage with and learn from our world. Research carried out over the last half century has provided new insights into the way such multisensory processing improves human performance and perception; the neurophysiological foundations of multisensory function; the time course for its development; how multisensory abilities differ in clinical populations; and, most recently, the links between multise

Sensory hypersensitivity and insistence on sameness (I/S) are common, co-occurring features of autism, yet the relationship between them is poorly understood. This study assessed the impact of sensory hypersensitivity on the clinical symptoms of specific phobia, separation anxiety, social anxiety and I/S for autistic and typically developing (TD) children. Parents of 79 children completed questionnaires on their child's difficulties related to sensory processing, I/S, and anxiety. Results demonstrated that sensory hypersensitivity mediated 67% of the relationship between symptoms of specific p

Controversy exists about residual symptoms after pharmacological treatment of Lyme neuroborreliosis. Reports of disabling long-term sequels lead to concerns in patients and health care providers. We systematically reviewed the available evidence from studies reporting treatment of Lyme neuroborreliosis to assess the prevalence and spectrum of residual symptoms after treatment. A literature search was performed in three databases and three clinical trial registers to find eligible studies reporting on residual symptoms in patients after pharmacological treatment of LNB. Diagnosis must have been

INTRODUCTION: Chronic daily headache (CDH), or headache more than 15 days/month or over 180 days/year, is one of the main reasons for visits to specialised headache centres and accounts for up to 5% of primary headaches.
AIMS: Our objective was to determine the classification, epidemiology, risk factors and pathophysiology of CDH by reviewing the literature.
DEVELOPMENT: CDH has a prevalence of 2 to 3% in the general population and is subdivided into two groups according to the headache duration. The first group (more than four hours) represents over 90% patients; includes chronic migraine (

1. We have studied the sensations evoked by threshold microstimulation (TMS) in the area of the human principal sensory nucleus of the thalamus [ventralis caudalis (Vc)] in patients (n = 11) undergoing stereotactic surgery for the treatment of movement disorders and pain. Preoperatively, patients were trained to describe somatic sensory stimuli using a standard list of descriptors. This same list was used to describe sensations evoked intraoperatively by thalamic microstimulation. Stimulation sites (n = 216) were defined by location within the area where the majority of cells had a reproducibl

The aim of this study was to explore the prefrontal cortex response to emotional salient stimuli in subjects with high scores in Neuroticism (and low in Sensation Seeking) or high scores in Sensation Seeking (and low in Neuroticism) personality traits, -called now Neuroticism and Sensation Seeking groups-. For this purpose, we selected 24 females (mean age: 20; SD: 1.74 years) and assigned them to two different groups according to their extreme score in personality dimensions. Ten pleasant and ten unpleasant pictures from the International Affective Picture System were presented. Neuroticism g

Recurrent bullous pemphigoid is a rare autoimmune vesiculobullous disorder caused by bullous lesions on the body and areas of ruptured bullae that leave raw erythematous regions, resulting in a burning sensation in the oral cavity. The article enlightens the occurrence of bullous pemphigoid in a 68-year-old male who complained of a burning sensation in his oral cavity. The diagnosis was exclusively based on history and clinical examination without any intervention by histopathological or immunofluorescent tests.

BACKGROUND: Postural control requires the interaction of somatosensory, vestibular and visual systems to prevent disequilibrium. Children with strabismus have an impaired visual input which can lead to postural control deficits.
RESEARCH QUESTION: Does strabismus affect sensory organization for postural control in children?
METHODS: A systematic comprehensive search of multiple electronic databases for relevant articles was performed using a predetermined search strategy. Peer-reviewed journal publications that assessed sensory organization and postural performance in children with strabismu

Traditional definitions of focal dystonia point to its motor component, mainly affecting planning and execution of voluntary movements. However, focal dystonia is tightly linked also to sensory dysfunction. Accurate motor control requires an optimal processing of afferent inputs from different sensory systems, in particular visual and somatosensory (e.g., touch and proprioception). Several experimental studies indicate that sensory-motor integration - the process through which sensory information is used to plan, execute, and monitor movements - is impaired in focal dystonia. The neural degene

Recent years have seen the publication of a range of new theories suggesting that the basis of dyslexia might be sensory dysfunction. In this Opinion article, the evidence for and against several prominent sensory theories of dyslexia is closely scrutinized. Contrary to the causal claims being made, my analysis suggests that many proposed sensory deficits might result from the effects of reduced reading experience on the dyslexic brain. I therefore suggest that longitudinal studies of sensory processing, beginning in infancy, are required to successfully identify the neural basis of developmen

A 39-year-old man presented with a chronic nonhealing toe ulcer and multiple skin-colored papules on the back, arms, and knees. From an initial small erosion, the toe lesion ulcerated over a 1.5-year period, while the papules progressed over a 6-month period, first appearing on the back and then spreading to the arms and knees. The past medical and family history were non-contributory. Pertinent findings included the aforementioned well-defined, asymmetric, shiny papules (Fig. 1). There were multiple, discrete, erythematous, pedunculated, tumor-like masses of various sizes over the right thigh

Congenital macroglossia is a relatively uncommon condition characterised by enlargement of the tongue disproportionate to the rest of the dentoalveolar structures. It may cause significant symptoms in children. It is important to achieve uniform global reduction of the enlarged tongue for functional as well as aesthetic reasons. It is also important to preserve the mobility and sensation of the tongue. We describe a technique which meets these criteria.

Three studies were conducted to compare the ability of a measure of fear of physical sensations (Anxiety Sensitivity Index; ASI) and a measure of trait anxiety (State-Trait Anxiety Inventory; STAI) to predict response to hyperventilation. In the first study subjects (N = 43) were selected who differed in scores on the ASI but were equated on levels of trait anxiety. Two other studies were conducted in which subjects (ns = 63 and 54) varied randomly on ASI and STAI scores. The results indicate that scores on the ASI account for a significant proportion of variance in the response to hyperventil

Alloesthesia is a condition in which a sensory stimulus, given on one side of the body, is perceived to be at the corresponding area on the opposite side. In our previous study (Kawamura, Hirayama et al., 1987), we suggested that it may be useful for localization because this phenomenon was observed most frequently in patients with a right putaminal hemorrhage of medium or large size, an average of 42 ml on CT scans, presenting a slight disturbance of consciousness and, in about half of the patients, anosognosia. We also suggested that since alloesthesia is produced not only in cerebral but al

The author describes several patients undergoing in vivo exposure therapy for simple phobias who reported transient sensory distortions without other evidence of psychosis. The experiences occurred mainly in the tactile, kinesthetic, and visual modes. Their nature and significance are undetermined, but they appear to resemble conversion symptoms, hypnotic sensory distortions, and other nonpsychotic sensory experiences stimulated by emotionally charged ideas.

BACKGROUND: Autistic individuals excel at visual search, however, the neural mechanism(s) underlying this advantage remain unclear. The locus coeruleus-norepinephrine (LC-NE) system, which plays a critical role in sensory perception and selective attention, has been shown to function in a persistently elevated state in individuals on the spectrum. However, the relationship between elevated tonic LC-NE activity and accelerated search in autism has not been explored.
OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between visual search abilities and resting pupil diameter (an indirect measure of tonic L
