Specific anosmia, the inability to perceive a specific odor, while olfactory perception is otherwise intact, is known as a rather seldom phenomenon. By testing the prevalence of specific anosmia to 20 different odors in a sample of 1600 people, we were able to estimate the general prevalence of anosmia. The intranasal trigeminal and the olfactory system are intimately connected. There is evidence showing that acquired olfactory loss leads to reduced trigeminal sensitivity due to the lack of a central-nervous interaction. Both, the orbitofrontal cortex and the rostral insula appear to be of significance in the amplification of trigeminal input which is missing in patients with olfactory loss. On peripheral levels, however, adaptive mechanisms seem to produce an increase in the trigeminal responsiveness of patients with hyposmia or anosmia.

The effects of N-methyl-formimino-methylester were studied in albino mice. Very short exposure (0.5 and 1 s) to the concentrated vapour led to an increase of the neural olfactory threshold to geraniol by a factor of 10(5)-10(7). There was a slow recovery of the olfactory sensitivity and after about 40 days the threshold values returned to normal.

A case of a 25-year-old white adult female with geographic tongue is reported. A decrease in lingual tactile sensitivity was indicated to exist as measured through mechanical vibration. This decreased lingual sensitivity remained constant over a 10-week interval, even though the patient developed an overall healthier general outlook during this period. The overt symptoms accompanying this condition also changed from day to day, but appeared to have little or no effect on the overall decreased lingual tactile sensitivity.

Studies of rectal sensory thresholds and compliance in patients with the irritable bowel syndrome have produced conflicting results though there is persistent evidence of rectal hypersensitivity particularly in those with diarrhoea-predominant symptoms. This study examined rectal sensation and compliance in 31 patients with constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome (mean age 41 years, 27 female) and 17 healthy volunteers (mean age 45 years, 17 female).
