The group A streptococcus is capable of producing exotoxins that have been linked to a toxic shock-like syndrome. Streptococcal toxic shock is a rapidly progressive disease associated with injury to multiple organ systems and a 30-60% mortality rate. We present a case of a 40-year-old woman who developed group A streptococcal toxic shock following a spontaneous abortion. She required surgical debridement, pulmonary artery catheterization, mechanical ventilation, and massive transfusions. Clinicians must be aware of the presentation of this disease, as its incidence appears to be increasing.

Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae rarely causes bacteremia, and it has never been reported to cause septic shock. A 58-year-old man with fulminant hyperdynamic shock associated with E. rhusiopathiae bacteremia is described. Erysipelothrix must be considered when a patient with an appropriate history presents with septic shock.

A 46-year-old man had a prolonged septic peritonitis with shock that resulted from a perforated appendix at the age of 29, followed, six months later, by the gradual development of partial hypopituitarism. Radiographic studies, including a pneumoencephalogram, did not reveal any evidence of sellar or surprasellar masses. Endocrine studies revealed growth hormone and gonadotropic deficiency and possible adrenocorticotropic hormone deficiency and possible adrenocorticotropic hormone deficiency. The nature of the disease course yielded much speculation in regard to pathogenesis of the condition.

BACKGROUND: The study sought to investigate seasonal effects on the prevalence and outcomes of patients with cardiogenic shock (CS) and sepsis/septic shock (SS).
METHODS: We analyzed two prospective single-center registries at a tertiary medical ICU including patients with CS (June 2019-May 2021) and sepsis/SS (June 2019-January 2021). Patients were grouped by season of ICU admission (spring, summer, autumn, winter). The primary endpoint of 30-day all-cause mortality was investigated using Kaplan-Meier and multivariable Cox regression analyses.
RESULTS: We included 634 patients: 273 CS (43.1

Shock thyroid is a rare manifestation of the CT hypotension complex and can be diagnosed when thyroid and perithyroidal edemas are observed on CT during the onset of shock. Shock thyroid can be a useful CT sign for decompensated shock. This condition is reversible and recovers rapidly with adequate treatment. We present the case of an 84-year-old female with septic shock, exhibiting CT features consistent with a shock thyroid. We also reviewed the clinical and radiological findings reported in the literature. The present case emphasizes that shock thyroid can be an early indicator of impending

Pasteurella multocida is a facultative anaerobic and gram-negative bacteria. It lives in the upper airway of animals, especially dogs and cats. P. multocida infection commonly results in regional cellulitis, although septic shock complication is uncommon. Here, we report on a fatal case of septic shock developing from a natural knee joint infection.

Objective: To explore the differences in early clinical features between Kawasaki disease shock syndrome (KDSS) and septic shock (SS). Methods: A retrospective case-control study was conducted. Clinical data was collected from 64 children who were diagnosed with KDSS or SS and admitted to the Department of Critical Care Medicine of Capital Center for Children's Health, Capital Medical University from January 2018 to February 2025. Mann-Whitney U test, χ² test, or Fisher's exact test were used to compare the differences in clinical features, treatment, and outcomes between children with KDSS an

BACKGROUND: In addition to glycemic control, the anti-inflammatory effects and protective effect of metformin on sepsis have been reported in animal studies, which may be beneficial for patients with septic shock. Few observational studies have evaluated metformin administration after sepsis or bacteremia; however, these studies did not specifically analyze septic shock or long-term outcomes. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the associations between metformin administration after septic shock and the short- and long-term survival in septic shock patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review aims to synthetize current evidence on the management of septic shock in patients with cirrhosis. It highlights the unique characteristics and the limitations of conventional strategies in this population.
RECENT FINDINGS: The distinct pathophysiological profile of septic shock in patients with cirrhosis and different endothelial dysfunction phenotypes were explored in recent studies. Hemodynamic targets and resuscitation strategies may need to be adjusted in this population, but no definitive parameters have been identified. Trials evaluating fluid therapy have

We present an update on recommendations for managing septic shock in the emergency department during the "golden hour," highlighting the importance of early recognition and rapid implementation of therapeutic measures to reduce morbidity and mortality. It includes specific diagnostic criteria (the Phoenix Sepsis Scale), which improve the identification of sepsis and septic shock, although their usefulness in the initial stage is limited. This update covers strategies for hemodynamic support, airway management, individualized ultrasound-guided fluid therapy, and the safe use of vasoactive drugs

Sepsis and septic shock are leading causes of maternal morbidity and mortality. Sepsis complicates an estimated 1 in 1,000 pregnancies and is responsible for 24% of in-hospital maternal deaths. Because most cases occur outside of the hospital, it is crucial to educate patients about warning signs to seek early medical care and for clinicians to engage in critical listening and evaluation of patient concerns. In the hospital, screening patients for vital sign aberrancy, followed by bedside and laboratory evaluation for signs of end-organ injury, prompt antibiotic therapy, and restoration of per

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction significantly impacts patient outcomes in septic shock, complicating clinical management due to its central role in systemic inflammation, barrier integrity, and nutrient assimilation. This review summarizes the evolving understanding of GI dysfunction during septic shock and provides an updated framework for clinical management.
RECENT FINDINGS: New insights from recent studies focus on individualized nutritional strategies over standardized calorie-driven targets, highlighting risks associated with aggressive enteral nutrition, such as ex

Septic shock is a common acute and critical illness in intensive care medicine. It can lead to multiple organ failure, of which the heart is one of the target organs. Fluid resuscitation plays an important role in the treatment of septic shock, but when a patient develops septic-induced cardiomyopathy, the circulation is often not improved by fluid resuscitation, and may even lead to deterioration of circulation. On October 2, 2023, a 52-year-old female patient with septic shock was admitted to the department of intensive care medicine of Civil Aviation General Hospital, whose circulation dete
