We studied the effect of chronic psychosocial stress on cell death and volume changes in the tree shrew hippocampus. In situ end labelling (ISEL) identified low frequent but convincing apoptosis in many hippocampal subregions. Also in entorhinal cortex, apoptosis was found, generally at higher frequencies. After 28 days of chronic stress, apoptosis was significantly reduced in the CA1 stratum radiatum, whereas an increase was observed in the hilus (P < 0.04). With all subregions taken together, the hippocampus showed a decrease, whereas in the cortex, an increase in apoptosis was found after s

The vascularization of the cerebrum (cerebral cortex and basal ganglia) in the common tree shrew (Tupaia glis) has been studied in detail using vinyl injection and vascular corrosion cast/SEM techniques. It is found that the arterial supply of the cerebral cortex are from cortical branches of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) and of the anterior cerebral artery (ACA). These arteries are in turn branches of the internal carotid artery (ICA). In addition, the cerebral cortex receives the blood from the cortical branches of the posterior cerebral artery (PCA) that originates from the basilar arter

The distribution of the calcium-binding protein calretinin was studied in peripheral and central parts of the main olfactory system (MOS) and the vomeronasal system (VNS) of adult tree shrew Tupaia belangeri. The calretinin immunoreaction was carried out with a peroxidase-coupled polyclonal antibody. In the VNS, complete labeling of all receptor cells and vomeronasal nerve fibers was observed, whereas only a subset of the somata and dendrites of receptor cells and of the olfactory nerve fibers of the MOS was immunoreactive. From the immunoreactive dendritic clubs of vomeronasal receptor cells,

The thyroid and thymic arteries were investigated in 36 male and 36 female house musk shrews. The superior thyroid artery was constant. The artery arose, in the most instances, from the external carotid arteries. The artery, in about one fourth instances, sent both the superior and inferior branches supplying the gland and the former branch terminated in the superior and inferior laryngeal arteries. The latter branch was independent in the remaining instances. The superior laryngeal artery was independent in a few specimens. In some instances, the superior thyroid artery did not send the infer…

We studied the lymphocyte-homing to palatine tonsils of the musk shrew, a new experimental animal originally developed in Japan. The tonsils of the animals have typically high endothelial venules (HEV) in the parafollicular region. The in vivo migration test showed that blood-circulating lymphocytes were able to home to the tonsils through the HEV. The in vitro lymphocyte-HEV binding assay clearly indicated the binding preference of the lymphocytes to be the tonsillar HEV. First, binding of B cells to the tonsillar HEV was seen to a greater extent than that of T cells, which was consistent wit

An adult greater white-toothed shrew (Crocidura russula) had both a quadricuspid aortic valve and a single coronary artery arising from the aorta. The shrew was caught on 10 May 1994 in the environs of Málaga, southern Spain. Both congenital anomalies may be potential causes of cardiac dysfunction, but apparently produced no significant cardiac complication in the shrew. This is the first report of a quadricuspid aortic valve in a wild-living mammal.

BACKGROUND: Cross-species transmission of zoonotic IAVs to humans is potentially widespread and lethal, posing a great threat to human health, and their cross-species transmission mechanism has attracted much attention. miRNAs have been shown to be involved in the regulation of IAVs infection and immunity, however, few studies have focused on the molecular mechanisms underlying miRNAs and mRNAs expression after IAVs cross-species infection.
METHODS: We used tree shrews, a close relative of primates, as a model and used RNA-Seq and bioinformatics tools to analyze the expression profiles of DEM…

Animal influenza viruses can spread across species and pose a fatal threat to human health due to the high pathogenicity and mortality. Anim … influenza viruses had a strong ability on tissue infection in the turbinate and the trachea of tree shrews in vitro, in which SW2783 showed stronger replication ability than in ZZ346. SW2783 and ZZ346 both showed pathogenic ability with infected tree shrews model in vivo without prior adaptive culture, which mainly happened in the upper respiratory tract …

BACKGROUND: Rats live in close proximity to human populations. Feral rodents are known to transmit diseases and act as reservoir hosts to many zoonotic parasites that pose health risks to humans. The aim of this study is to investigate endoparasitic infections in commensal rats and shrews caught in traditional wet markets in Taichung City, Taiwan.
METHODS: A total of 51 commensal wild rodents and shrews were caught in traditional wet markets in Taichung City, including 32 Rattus norvegicus, 11 R. rattus, and eight Suncus murinus. All tissues, organs, and intestinal contents were carefully exa…

BACKGROUND: Staphylococcal enterotoxins (SEs) are the most common cause of foodborne diseases and toxic shock throughout the world. However, no vaccine that prevents emesis induced by SEs has been described.
METHODS: A nontoxic mutant of SEA, SEAD227A, was constructed by site-directed mutagenesis and was purified by means of the Escherichia coli expression system. House musk shrews, a small emetic animal model, were immunized with SEAD227A and then challenged with wild-type SEA. SEA-induced emesis was recorded for 3 h. Antibody production was analyzed by gel double-immunodiffusion assay. Neut…

The Chinese tree shrew ( Tupaia belangeri chinensis) has emerged as a promising model for investigating adrenal steroid synthesis, but it is unclear whether the same cells produce steroid hormones and whether their production is regulated in the same way as in humans. Here, we comprehensively mapped the cell types and pathways of steroid metabolism in the adrenal gland of Chinese tree shrews using single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptome analysis, mass spectrometry, and immunohistochemistry. We compared the transcriptomes of various adrenal cell types across tree shrews, humans, macaq…

Wide-field (WF) neurons of the tectopulvinar pathway integrate retinal and cortical inputs via large dendritic arbors crucial for rapid visual motion detection. Previous studies identified potential marker genes for mouse WF neurons. Here, we validate CBLN2 as a molecular marker of the tree shrew WF neurons and construct AAVs that exploit CBLN2 promoter to selectively target WF neurons across species. Using intersectional genetics in the tree shrew, we show that WF neuron dendrites receive a distinct pattern of VGluT1+ and VGluT2+ inputs based on their distance from the cell body in the dorsov

Phylogenetically, the tribosphenic molars-prototypes of multi-cusped cheek teeth in marsupial and placental mammals-are derived from the single-cusped conical teeth of reptiles through the addition of cusps. Ontogenetically, mammalian molars are formed through the interface between the dental epithelium and mesenchyme (future enamel-dentin junction), becoming geometrically complex by adding epithelial signaling centers, called enamel knots, which determine future cusp positions. To reevaluate cusp homologies in Mesozoic mammals from an ontogenetic perspective, this study tracked molar developm
