[Endodontic configuration of the first permanent maxillary molar of west sibirian residents: (a cone - beam computed tomografy analysis in vivo)].

The aim of the study was to evaluate the first maxillary molars anatomic features among residents of Western Siberia by means of cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). The study included 356 patients aged 18-75 receiving CBCT (Planmeca ProMax 3D Max) as preparation for root canal treatment. The results of CBCT were analyzed by Plunmeca Romexis Viewer software. Root curvature degree was assessed by FKG Dentaire SA sample. CBCT proved to be more relevant for root canal morphology assessment: unilateral or bilateral occurrences of additional mesiobuccal canal, root curvature degree and length, roo

Molecular identification and phylogeny of Dermacentor nuttalli (Acari: Ixodidae).

Dermacentor nuttalli is an epidemiologically important tick in Palearctic Asia which transmits several infectious diseases including tularemia, North Asian tick-borne rickettsiosis, Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis. The genetic specificity and phylogeny of D. nuttalli from four geographic localities in Eastern Siberia were characterized using the mitochondrial (mt) 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) gene and internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2). Low genetic diversity was observed in the populations of ticks distributed from South Siberia to North China. From 11 detected mt 16S haplotypes, one wa

The Yeniseian and Andronovo Substrates in the Gene Pools of the Indigenous Southern Siberian Populations Analyzed by Q and R1a Y-Haplogroups.

Background/Objectives: Due to advances in paleogenetic research, a substantial amount of data has been accumulated on the Y-chromosome of the ancient Scytho-Siberian population that inhabited South Siberia and the adjacent territories of modern Mongolia and North-West China. It became possible to compare the Y-chromosomes of ancient men and modern Tuvans of various clans. Methods: We analyzed Y-SNPs and Y-STRs of ancient and modern samples. Results: During Tuvan ethnogenesis, the total frequency of the haplogroups Q and R1a dropped from 85% in Scytho-Siberian populations to 35% in modern Tuvan

Diversity and potential ecological roles of viruses in Pleistocene permafrost.

BACKGROUND: Ancient permafrost, formed during past glacial periods, is widespread in Siberia and other Arctic regions. Even though these soils have remained below 0 °C over geological time periods, the widespread presence of bacteria and archaea in permafrost is well documented. However, the diversity of viruses in ancient permafrost of different geological ages and their potential ecological roles are still poorly understood. RESULTS: We applied metagenomics to characterize viruses from Middle to Late Pleistocene permafrost sediments from Siberia. A total of 2697 viral operational taxonomic

Molecular variability and genetic structure of Omsk hemorrhagic fever virus, based on analysis of the complete genome sequences.

Omsk hemorrhagic fever virus (OHFV) is the etiological agent of Omsk hemorrhagic fever, a disease described in the 1940s in Western Siberia. However, until now, it has been represented in GenBank by just four complete genome sequences, which do not reflect the real genetic diversity of the virus in nature. In this study, we analyzed the molecular variability and genetic structure of OHFV based on 20 complete genome sequences, fifteen of which were obtained for the first time. All these sequences belong to virus strains isolated at different times from three regions of Western Siberia. The resu

Potential impact of climate change on Opisthorchis viverrini and Opisthorchis felineus transmission in Eurasia.

Human liver flukes of the family Opisthorchiidae, particularly Opisthorchis viverrini and Opisthorchis felineus, are major foodborne trematode parasites endemic to the Lower Mekong River Basin (Southeast Asia) and the Ob-Irtysh Basins (southern Western Siberia, Russian Federation), respectively. Together, these parasites infect over 14 million people, with an estimated 300 million at risk. Their transmission cycles involve Bithynia snails and Cyprinidae fish as first and second intermediate hosts, respectively, with humans and other fish-eating mammals serving as definitive hosts. The geograph

Novel lyssaviruses isolated from bats in Russia.

Two new rabies-related viruses were discovered in Russia during 2002. Viruses were isolated from bats in Eastern Siberia near Baikal Lake and in the western Caucasus Mountains. After preliminary antigenic and genetic characterization, we found that both viruses should be considered as new putative lyssavirus genotypes.

Arctic and Arctic-like rabies viruses: distribution, phylogeny and evolutionary history.

Forty-one newly sequenced isolates of Arctic and Arctic-like rabies viruses, were genetically compared to each other and to those available from GenBank. Four phylogenetic lineages of Arctic viruses were identified. Arctic-1 viruses circulate in Ontario, Arctic-2 viruses circulate in Siberia and Alaska, Arctic-3 viruses circulate circumpolarly, and a newly described lineage Arctic-4 circulates locally in Alaska. The oldest available isolates from Siberia (between 1950 and 1960) belong to the Arctic-2 and Arctic-3 lineages and share 98.6-99.2% N gene identity with contemporary viruses. Two line

[Opisthorchis felineus--the cat liver fluke. Differential diagnosis of right-side upper abdominal pain].

For several weeks a 58-year-old woman had suffered from intermittent right upper abdominal and flank pain, loss of appetite, weight loss (2 kg in 8 weeks), as well as constipation. She had a mild eosinophilia of 0.48/nl, while the blood picture and differential count were normal. There was no evidence of cholestasis, liver disease or an inflammatory process. Upper abdominal ultrasound examination demonstrated a gall-bladder polyp with cholelithiasis and sludge. Although the intrahepatic biliary tract was normal, the gallbladder was much enlarged and contracted only moderately after a test meal

Analysis of four Echinococcus multilocularis mitogenome sequences from Inner Mongolia, China: supporting the hypothesis that E. sibiricensis is confirmed as the O1 haplotype.

BACKGROUND: Echinococcus multilocularis is a zoonotic parasitic species that causes alveolar echinococcosis (AE), a severe disease affecting both humans and animals. This disease is particularly prevalent in the Northern Hemisphere, especially in northeast Asia, Europe, and North America. Previous studies have often conflated the haplotypes of E. multilocularis from Inner Mongolia, China, and Siberia, Russia. Furthermore, the unique variant identified in Inner Mongolia is of significant importance for elucidating the evolutionary history of E. multilocularis. METHODS: The four complete mitoch

Vectors of disease at the northern distribution limit of the genus Dermacentor in Eurasia: D. reticulatus and D. silvarum.

The two ixodid tick species Dermacentor reticulatus (Fabricius) and Dermacentor silvarum Olenev occur at the northern distribution limit of the genus Dermacentor in Eurasia, within the belt of [Formula: see text] latitude. Whilst the distribution area of D. reticulatus extends from the Atlantic coast of Portugal to Western Siberia, that of D. silvarum extends from Western Siberia to the Pacific coast. In Western Siberia, the distribution areas of the two Dermacentor species overlap. Although the two tick species are important vectors of disease, detailed information concerning the entire distr

The liver fluke Opisthorchis felineus: biology, epidemiology and carcinogenic potential.

The liver fluke Opisthorchis felineus is a member of the triad of epidemiologically important liver fluke species belonging to the family Opisthorchiidae and the major agent causing opisthorchiasis over a vast territory, covering Russia, Kazakhstan and several European countries. The similarity between the diseases caused by O. felineus and other liver flukes, O. viverrini and Clonorchis sinensis, in clinical manifestations and course suggests that the scenarios of their development and, possibly, complications have much in common. The International Agency for Research on Cancer classified O.

Omsk haemorrhagic fever.

Omsk haemorrhagic fever is an acute viral disease prevalent in some regions of western Siberia in Russia. The symptoms of this disease include fever, headache, nausea, severe muscle pain, cough, and moderately severe haemorrhagic manifestations. A third of patients develop pneumonia, nephrosis, meningitis, or a combination of these complications. The only treatments available are for control of symptoms. No specific vaccine has been developed, although the vaccine against tick-borne encephalitis might provide a degree of protection against Omsk haemorrhagic fever virus. The virus is transmitte

A taxonomical re-evaluation of Schistocephalus sp. (Cestoda: Diphyllobothriidea) from Siberian cottid fishes (Russia).

Schistocephalus spp. are widely distributed Holarctic cestodes that comprise key model species for host-parasite studies. S. solidus and S. pungitii, the most extensively studied species, exhibit narrow host specificity. Another species, S. cotti, is known from the European bullhead (Cottus gobio); however, information on its host range, geographical distribution, and molecular data remain poorly characterized. In Siberia, plerocercoids of Schistocephalus found in sculpins were previously recorded from endemic cottid fishes of Lake Baikal and were identified as S. solidus, which is inconsisten
