Efficacy of a Remote Person-Centered Intervention Using an eHealth Platform and Telephone Support for Persons With Chronic Pain: Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain is a growing global public health challenge and the leading cause of years lived with disability. It significantly impacts various aspects of daily life, including participation in working life, resulting in increased sick leave and substantial burdens at both the personal and societal levels. Person-centered care (PCC) is a practiced ethic that recognizes the patient as a partner in care. Partnership is established through incorporating the person's narrative, shared decision-making, and documentation of jointly agreed goals. Remotely delivered PCC interventions have …

Sickness absence as an interactive process: gendered experiences of young, highly educated women with mental health problems.

OBJECTIVE: Highly educated Dutch women experience more work related mental health disability than their male counterparts, and yet little is known regarding the process. Using the theory of symbolic interactionism, we examined how women interpret their roles at work, during sick leave, and upon their return to work. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews focusing on role perceptions and interactions with other actors were conducted with 13 women (aged 29-41 years) on sick leave or off work for periods ranging from half a year to 8 years. RESULTS: The women worked overtime because of work aholis…

Work health determinants in employees without sickness absence.

BACKGROUND: Working ability is known to be related to good physical condition, clear work tasks, positive feedback and other occupational, organizational and psychosocial factors. In Sweden, high levels of sickness absence are due to stress-related disorders and musculoskeletal pain. AIMS: To identify work health characteristics in a working population with a large variety of professional skills and occupational tasks. METHODS: Employers' data on occupation, sickness absence, age and gender in a working population of 11 occupational groups and questionnaire responses regarding work-organizat

Prevalence and impact of SARS-CoV-2, influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection and respiratory illness on UK healthcare workers during winter 2023/24 (September 2023 to March 2024): SIREN cohort study.

BACKGROUND: During the winter, healthcare systems experience additional pressures due to increases in respiratory infections and staff absence. We aimed to determine the prevalence of respiratory viruses and impact on sickness absence in the SIREN healthcare worker (HCW) cohort during winter 2023/24. METHODS: SIREN is a cohort study with linked testing, vaccination, demographic, symptoms and sick leave data. Participants undergo fortnightly multiplex PCR testing for SARS-CoV-2, influenza and RSV, regardless of symptoms. The proportion of participants who took sick leave, the total number and …

Direct and indirect costs for anal fistula in Sweden.

[Rehabilitation Success After Psychosomatic Rehabilitation as a Function of Symptomatic Load and Duration of Incapacity to Work].

PURPOSE: Rehabilitation success is directly reflected in individual symptom reduction and indirectly in sociomedical benefits. The findings on the extension of measures to increase rehabilitation success are controversial. Treatment duration does not seem to be a sufficient predictor of rehabilitation success. Long periods of sick leave may contribute to chronification of mental illness. The study examined the relationship between the duration of sick leave before psychosomatic rehabilitation (less vs. more than 3 months) with different depression severity at the start of rehabilitation (below…

Changes in depression domains as predictors of return to work in common mental disorders.

BACKGROUND: Depression highly impairs function and reduces quality of life. Therefore, both symptomatic and functional recovery are important treatment goals. Depression consists of several cognitive, somatic, and affective symptom factors that differently affect function. However, it is unclear whether changes in these domains predict return to work (RTW) after treatment. METHODS: Data were collected during treatment from patients on full or partial sick leave reporting depression symptoms (N = 300) at an out-patient clinic. Information on work status was assessed pre- and post-treatment and…

Does a patient's occupation influence the course of atopic dermatitis?

The importance of occupational environments in relation to the course of an atopic skin disease was investigated. A series of 1008 adult patients, who had had an atopic disease since their teenage years, were studied. Severe or moderate childhood atopic dermatitis tended to persist or relapse in adulthood independent of occupation. Only dermatitis of the hands showed a correlation with extensive daily exposure to occupational irritation factors. Atopic dermatitis patients did not go on sick leave more often than controls or those with atopic mucosal symptoms, although sick leave caused by skin…

The relationship between job-anxiety and trait-anxiety--a differential diagnostic investigation with the Job-Anxiety-Scale and the State-Trait-Anxiety-Inventory.

Job-related anxiety, in contrast to general trait-anxiety, is by its very nature associated with problems of participation at work. The aim of this study is to investigate the relation between general trait-anxiety and specific job-related anxiety and to examine whether job-anxiety and trait-anxiety are differently associated with sick leave. 190 inpatients of a psychosomatic and orthopaedic rehabilitation center with mental and somatic disorders filled in the Job-Anxiety-Scale (JAS) and the State-Trait-Anxiety-Inventory (STAI-T). Additionally, informations on age, gender, the current duration…

Impact of COVID-19 pandemic outbreak on mental health of the hospital front-line healthcare workers in Chile: a difference-in-differences approach.

BACKGROUND: Most of the evidence about impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of healthcare workers (HCWs) comes from symptom questionnaires. It is important to evaluate main mental health diagnoses in hospital front-line HCW's during the early acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in Chile. METHODS: An individual-level cross-sectional study using administrative data was conducted. A Difference-in-Difference (DiD) approach was used to estimate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on sick leave rates of depression, anxiety and acute stress reaction among hospital front-line HCW's in co…

Occupational status among adult survivors following allogeneic stem cell transplantation in childhood.

This study examined occupational status and factors associated with sick leave and disability pension among adult long-term survivors previously treated with allogeneic stem cell transplantation (allo-SCT) during childhood. Moreover, occupational status was compared to that of a reference group. Data were collected with questionnaires and from medical records. The SCT group included 59 adults (18-45 years old: response rate 63%) treated with allo-SCT in childhood with a median of 17 (range 3-28) years earlier. The reference group included 296 individuals randomly selected from the general popu…

Do mental health problems increase sickness absence due to other diseases?

BACKGROUND: The incidence of mental health problems is rising. Large sex differences are found for mental health problems, which also is reflected in sick-leave. The aim of this study was to analyse the association of mental health problems with sickness absence in general. METHODS: Employed women (n = 1407) in four occupational groups, namely metal workers, enrolled nurses, medical secretaries and nurses, were included. Sick-leave data were collected through social insurance and employers' registers. Five indicators reflecting different aspects of mental health problems were analysed in rela
