Chordoma located in the jugular foramen: Case report.

RATIONALE: Chordomas are rare malignant neoplasms arised from residual embryonic notochordal tissue, mostly located in the axial midline. Tumors along extra-axial locations in the head and neck are rare. Chordomas located in the jugular foramen are extremely rare, with a low incidence of 0.2%. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 64-year-old male with 20 years of dizziness history complaining of 6 months of severe dizziness: significant with the changing of the body posture, vertigo which can be self-remissioned within 1 minute and hearing loss of both ears, without headache, nausea, dysphagia, or otalgia. A new case of primary signet-ring cell carcinoma of the cervix with prominent endometrial and myometrial involvement: Immunohistochemical and molecular studies and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: As a rule, endocervical tumours with signet-ring cell are classed as metastatic extra-genital neoplasms. In a patient aged 45 years, we describe primary cervical signet-ring cell carcinoma (PCSRCC) characterized by prominent endometrial and myometrial involvement, simulating primary endometrial adenocarcinoma with cervical extension. In addition, a review was made of the literature to identify the clinical and pathological features of this rare malignancy. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45-year-old woman was referred to our Gynaecology Department due to persistent abnormal vaginal bleeding.

Colitis cystica profunda diagnosed by laparoscopic excision: A case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Colitis cystica profunda (CCP) is a rare condition with multiple cystic lesions in the mucosal/submucosal layers, predominantly involving the rectum and sigmoid colon. Its etiology remains unclear, with mucinous neoplasms and polyps as major differential diagnoses. Nonspecific imaging and clinical manifestations make preoperative diagnosis challenging (most confirmed postoperatively). This report summarizes reported cases, adds a new one, and compares it with 106 prior cases to enhance understanding of its features, diagnosis and management. CASE SUMMARY: Herein, we report a 32-ye

Actinomycosis of the Sigmoid Colon Mimicking Malignancy and Presented with Bowel Obstruction.

BACKGROUND: Actinomycosis is a chronic inflammatory condition caused by Actinomyces israelii or other Actinomycetes species, with primary abdominopelvic involvement being the most important form of the disease, especially when there is splanchnic infiltration. In cases of colonic involvement, the disease is often misdiagnosed as a neoplasm by imaging studies, and surgery is undertaken. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 48-year-old male living in a rural area in whom a computed tomography (CT) scan showed a large, irregular abdominopelvic mass infiltrating the urinary bladder, the lef

Cytoreductive Surgery and Hyperthermic Peritoneal Chemotherapy in Appendiceal and Colorectal Cancer: Outcomes and Survival.

BACKGROUND: We reviewed outcomes following cytoreductive surgery/hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for patients with appendiceal or colorectal neoplasms and evaluated key prognostic indicators for treatment. METHODS: All patients who underwent cytoreductive surgery/HIPEC for appendiceal and colorectal neoplasms were identified from an IRB-approved database. Patient demographics, operative reports, and postoperative outcomes were reviewed. RESULTS: 110 patients [median age 54.5 (18-79) years, 55% male] were included. Primary tumor location was colorectal (58; 52.7%) and append

Incidence and survival of patients with Dukes' A (stages T1 and T2) colorectal carcinoma: a 15-year population-based study.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Patients with stage I (Dukes' A) colorectal carcinoma tend to show a good prognosis; however, recurrences can be observed in some patients. Through a specialized colorectal cancer Registry, we attempted to investigate the epidemiological and clinical features of individuals with Dukes' A neoplasms. PATIENTS AND METHODS: From 1984 to 1998, 295 individuals were diagnosed with Stage I /Dukes' A tumors; 150 of these had lesions infiltrating the muscular wall (T2), while 145 had neoplasms limited to the submucosa (T1). RESULTS: Dukes' A tumors represented 13.8% of all registe

[A Case of Double Cancer of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Rectum and Adenocarcinoma of the Sigmoid Colon].

A 72-year-old male was transported to our hospital with complaints of heart palpitations and dyspnea since a month earlier and was immobile. Blood examination showed severe anemia, and colonoscopy revealed circumferential tumors in the rectum and the sigmoid colon. Histopathologic examination revealed the tumors as squamous cell carcinoma of the rectum and adenocarcinoma of the sigmoid colon. Therefore, they were diagnosed as double colorectal cancers. CT and MRI showed that rectal cancer invaded the seminal vesicles and the prostate; therefore, the patient underwent neoadjuvant chemoradiother

[A Case of Three Metachronous Metastases Excised Non-Simultaneously More than Six Years after Resection of Sigmoid Colon Cancer].

A 57-year-old man underwent curative resection for Stage Ⅰ sigmoid colon cancer; 6 years later, lung metastasis was detected and subsequently resected. Eight years after the first curative resection, retroperitoneal metastasis was detected and subsequently resected. Nine years after the first curative resection, a growing tumor was detected at the bottom of the right lower lobe of the lung. Partial lung resection was performed; pathological examination revealed a secondary tumor formed as a result of colon cancer metastasis. When we searched previous cases of late recurrence in colorectal canc

[Clinic and therapy of extragenital endometriosis (author's transl)].

Patients with endometriosis are rare in surgical departments, they are however routine in gynecology. Pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of this disease are outlined. Treatment with estrogens, androgens or gestagens does not have the desired effect in many cases; in recent time however good results have been reported when Danazol, a new synthetic steroid was used. Surgery is indicated when the intestines are obstructed or when drug therapy has no effects. The extent of surgery depends upon the localization of endometriosis and upon the age of the patient. During the fertile period the uteru

Appendiceal diverticulosis in a patient with family history of Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome--a case report.

Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome (BHD) is a rare autosomal dominant disorder that predisposes patients to cutaneous tumors, pulmonary cysts with recurrent spontaneous pneumothoraces, and a variety of renal neoplasms including hybrid oncocytic and chromophobe renal cell carcinomas. There has been much debate regarding the genetic link with the occurrence of colorectal cancer and other colonic anomalies. Associations between BHD and intestinal adenomatous polyposis and sigmoid diverticulosis have been described in the literature, but there have been no prior reports of appendiceal diverticulosis in patie

Torsion of a giant antimesenteric lipoma of the sigmoid: a rare cause of acute abdomen.

Lipomas of the gastrointestinal tract are uncommon benign tumors of mature adipocytes and may occur in any portion along the gut. Depending on location they may have a variety of clinical presentations and even simulate malignant neoplasms. We report a case of a 58-year-old woman who presented with acute pelvic pain. An emergency sonogram detected a hyperechogenic mass in the left adnexal region, with no vascularization on Doppler. A computed tomography confirmed the hypothesis of a fat containing tumor with signals of torsion. The patient underwent laparoscopy which depicted a mass over the a

Neuroendocrine tumors of the gastrointestinal tract: Case reports and literature review.

Neuroendocrine tumors (NET) previously called carcinoid tumors are neoplasms of enterochromaffin/neuroendocrine cell origin which display neurosecretory capacity that may result in the carcinoid syndrome. The annual incidence of patients with NET is 8.4 per 100000; yet many NET remain asymptomatic and clinically undetected. A majority of NET follows a benign course; however, some will display malignant characteristics. NET most commonly occur in the gastrointestinal tract (67%) and bronchopulmonary system (25%). Gastrointestinal NET occur within the stomach, small intestine, liver, and rectum.

Adenosquamous carcinoma of the colorectum: report of two cases.

Adenosquamous carcinomas of the colorectum are rare neoplasms. Our experience with two cases is presented in this paper. One patient, who complained of bloody stool, was found to have adenocarcinoma in the sigmoid colon. He received a laparoscopy-assisted sigmoidectomy. The histological examination revealed that the tumor was adenosquamous carcinoma. To date, he has survived six months post operatively without evidence of recurrence. The other patient, who complained of anal bleeding, was found to have rectal adenocarcinoma and received a low anterior resection. Histological examination reveal

Perforated appendicitis and obstructing colonic carcinoma in the elderly.

Two patients admitted with perforated appendicitis and obstructing colonic cancers are presented. The first patient, a 75-year-old man, developed a persistent fecal fistula following appendectomy. Barium enema demonstrated an obstructing hepatic flexure carcinoma. The second patient, a 62-year-old man, recovered uneventfully following appendectomy. Persistent occult blood was found in his stools during follow-up examinations. Three months after surgery, diagnostic colonoscopy revealed a nearly obstructing sigmoid carcinoma. Obstruction of the appendiceal lumen by such lesions as fecaliths, car
