Intrinsic Antimicrobial Properties of a Novel Silorane-Based Material for Orthopedic Applications.

One of many drawbacks of PMMA bone cement used to secure orthopedic implants is that its surface is highly susceptible to bacterial attachment and biofilm formation. In an effort to find alternative materials, we focused on silorane-based polymers previously developed for use in dental composites. Compared to PMMA, this composite has low shrinkage, low exothermic polymerization, low toxicity, and the potential for lower bacterial susceptibility. Building on this dental material's advantages, a novel silorane-based material for orthopedic use was developed utilizing a dual initiation system inc

Valorization of dredged sludge into sustainable subgrade materials through a novel industrial solid waste-derived stabilizer.

The development of sustainable and cost-effective stabilizers is urgently needed for the valorization of dredged sludge from riparian and lakeside engineering construction. Conventional cement-based methods have high environmental footprints, while traditional alkali-activated systems relying on sodium silicate remain costly. This study replaces conventional alkali activator with a silica fume (SF)-based activator to develop a novel, eco-friendly stabilizer derived from industrial solid wastes (ISW) for stabilizing dredged sludge as sustainable subgrade material. The mechanical, microstructura

A toughening mechanism of the strain rate-optimal chain length on polymer-modified calcium silicate hydrates (CSH).

Polymers are known to effectively improve the toughness of inorganic matrices; however, the mechanism at the molecular level is still unclear. In this study, we used molecular dynamics simulations to unravel the effects and mechanisms of different molecular chain lengths of polyacrylic acid (PAA) on toughening calcium silicate hydrate (CSH), which is the basic building block of cement-based materials. Our simulation results indicate that an optimal molecular chain length of polymers contributes to the largest toughening effect on the matrix, leading to up to 60.98% increase in fracture energy.

Nanoscale Insights into the Mechanical Behavior of Interfacial Composite Structures between Calcium Silicate Hydrate/Calcium Hydroxide and Silica.

The failure of the interfacial transition zone has been identified as the primary cause of damage and deterioration in cement-based materials. To further understand the interfacial failure mechanism, interfacial composite structures between the main hydration products of ordinary Portland cement (OPC), calcium silicate hydrate (CSH) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2), and silica (SiO2) were constructed while considering their anisotropy. Afterwards, uniaxial tensile tests were conducted using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Our results showed that the interfacial zones (IZs) of interfacial c

Response of human dental pulp capped with biodentine and mineral trioxide aggregate.

INTRODUCTION: Biodentine is a new bioactive cement that is similar to the widely used mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA). It has dentin-like mechanical properties, which may be considered a suitable material for clinical indications of dentin-pulp complex regeneration such as direct pulp capping. The purpose of the present study was to compare the response of the pulp-dentin complex in human teeth after direct capping with this new tricalcium silicate-based cement with that of MTA. METHODS: Pulps in 28 caries-free maxillary and mandibular permanent intact human molars scheduled for extraction f

Fracture Performance of Cementitious Composites Based on Quaternary Blended Cements.

This study presents test results and in-depth discussion regarding the measurement of the fracture mechanics parameters of new concrete composites based on quaternary blended cements (QBC). A composition of the two most commonly used mineral additives, i.e., fly ash (FA) and silica fume (SF), in combination with nanosilica (nS), has been proposed as a partial replacement for ordinary Portland cement (OPC) binder. Four series of concrete were made, one of which was the reference concrete (REF) and the remaining three were QBC. During the research, the main mechanical parameters of compressive s

Thermal effect of light irradiation time on the setting time of mineral trioxide aggregate and calcium-enriched mixture cements.

This study aimed to assess the thermal effect of different light irradiation times on the setting time of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) and calcium-enriched mixture (CEM) cements. This in vitro experimental study evaluated 40 hydraulic cement specimens, including 20 MTA and 20 CEM specimens, according to the manufacturers'instructions. For each cement, the specimens were divided into 3 test groups light cured with a halogen light-curing unit (n = 5 per group) and 1 control group (n = 5) that was not exposed to irradiation. The specimens in the MTA test groups were light cured for 20, 40, or

iRoot BP Plus Sustains Mitochondrial Homeostasis in Human Dental Pulp Stem Cells Subjected to Oxidative Stress.

Oxidative stress in inflamed pulp tissue compromises dental pulp stem cell survival, yet whether bioceramic materials preserve mitochondrial homeostasis under such conditions remains unclear. The present study demonstrates that iRoot BP Plus, a premixed calcium silicate cement, protects human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs) from H2O2-induced oxidative injury through comprehensive mitochondrial protection. iRoot BP Plus significantly restored cell viability, reduced intracellular ROS accumulation, and stabilized mitochondrial membrane potential. Morphometric analysis revealed preserved mitochon

Research on the Influence of Bed Joint Reinforcement on Strength and Deformability of Masonry Shear Walls.

The areas of Central and Eastern Europe and, thus, Poland are not exposed to the effects of seismic actions. Any possible tremors can be caused by coal or copper mining. Wind, rheological effects, the impact of other objects, or a nonuniform substrate are the predominant types of loading included in the calculations for stiffening walls. The majority of buildings in Poland, as in most other European countries, are low, medium-high brick buildings. Some traditional materials, like solid brick (> 10% of construction materials market) are still used, but autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) and ceme

Unique hot stage modification technique to enhance cementitious properties of electric arc furnace steel slag.

Decarburization is a major concern for global industries, particularly the steel and cement sectors, which together contribute nearly 15% of total carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. One approach to reducing CO2 emissions is re-utilizing industrial waste, such as slag, to produce cementitious materials. While ironmaking slag from blast furnaces is conventionally recycled as ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBS) cement, this technology is not directly applicable to electric arc furnace (EAF) slag, a byproduct of the steelmaking process. This study investigated the potential of direct reduced

New treatment option for an incomplete vertical root fracture--a preliminary case report.

Instead of extraction this case report presents an alternative treatment option for a maxillary incisor with a vertical root fracture (VRF) causing pain in a 78-year-old patient. After retreatment of the existing root canal filling the tooth was stabilized with a dentine adhesive and a composite restoration. Then the tooth was extracted, the VRF gap enlarged with a small diamond bur and the existing retrograde root canal filling removed. The enlarged fracture line and the retrograde preparation were filled with a calcium-silicate-cement (Biodentine). Afterwards the tooth was replanted and a ti
