Sinus floor augmentation with recombinant human growth and differentiation factor-5 (rhGDF-5): a histological and histomorphometric study in the Goettingen miniature pig.

AIM: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that recombinant human growth and differentiation factor-5 (rhGDF-5) enhances bone formation in sinus floor augmentations in miniature pigs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The maxillary sinus floors in 12 adult female Goettingen minipigs were augmented with beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) on one side. The contralateral test side was augmented using two concentrations of rhGDF-5 (400 microg rhGDF-5/g beta-TCP; 800 microg rhGDF-5/g beta-TCP) delivered on beta-TCP (six animals each). One dental implant was inserted into each sinus floor augmentat

Short implants (<8mm) versus longer implants (≥8mm) with lateral sinus floor augmentation in posterior atrophic maxilla: A meta-analysis of RCT`s in humans.

BACKGROUND: One of the greatest challenges that dentists face today is to rehabilitate severe atrophied alveolar ridges in partially and completely edentulous patients with implants. Despite the high survival rate of implants placed next to sinus elevation, this technique presents complications that can be avoided by placing short implants, an option that also presents high survival rates. For this reason, the aim of this study is to compare the survival rate, marginal bone loss and complications associated with short implants (<8 mm) versus longer implants (≥8mm) placed with lateral sinus flo

Histomorphometric results of different grafting materials and effect of healing time on bone maturation after sinus floor augmentation: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The aim of this systematic review was to evaluate histomorphometric variables, the amount of new bone (NB), residual graft (RG) particles and soft tissue (ST), related to various grafting materials and assess the effect of graft healing time on different histomorphometric outcomes. Studies that were published before October 2015 were electronically and manually searched in three databases. We included human studies that reported the amount of NB, RG and ST in the biopsies taken from the grafted sinuses. Based on the applied grafting materials, extracted data were categorized into different gro

Early implant placement in bilateral sinus floor augmentation using iliac bone block grafts in severe maxillary atrophy: a clinical, histological, and radiographic case report.

Effectively restoring a grossly atrophic maxilla can be difficult for the implant surgeon. The placement of dental implants in patients who are edentulous in the posterior maxilla can present difficulties because of deficient posterior alveolar ridge and increased pneumatization of the maxillary sinus, resulting in a minimal hard tissue bed. Implant placement requires adequate quality and quantity of bone, especially in the posterior maxilla. Insufficient bone height and width in this area of the maxilla, because of expansion of the maxillary sinus and atrophic reduction of the alveolar ridge,

Sinus floor augmentation with simultaneous implant placement using Choukroun's platelet-rich fibrin as the sole grafting material: a radiologic and histologic study at 6 months.

BACKGROUND: Sinus augmentation with simultaneous implant placement without bone graft material is a hotly debated technique. This technique could be improved and secured by the use of an autologous leukocyte- and platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) (Choukroun's technique) concentrate. The objectives of this study were to assess the relevance of PRF clots and membranes as the sole filling material during a lateral sinus lift with immediate implantation using radiologic and histologic analyses in a case series. METHODS: Twenty-five sinus elevations with simultaneous implantation were performed on 20 pat
