Total mercury in muscles and liver of Mugil spp. from three coastal lagoons of NW Mexico: concentrations and risk assessment.

Total mercury (Hg) concentrations were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry in muscles and liver of composite samples of Mugil cephalus and M. curema collected during November 2013 and in January, April, and July 2014 from the coastal lagoons Altata-Ensenada del Pabellón (AEP), Ceuta (CEU), and Teacapán-Agua Brava (TAG) of Sinaloa State. The mean Hg contents and information on local consumption were used to assess the possible risk caused by fish ingestion. Mean total mercury levels in the muscles ranged from 0.11 to 0.39 μg/g, while the range for liver was 0.12-3.91 μg/g. The mea

Diel vertical movements, and effects of infection by the cestode Schistocephalus solidus on daytime proximity of three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus to the surface of a large Alaskan lake.

We conducted a field study in Iliamna Lake, Alaska, to test the hypothesis that proximity of three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus to the lake's surface during the daytime varies with macroparasitic cestode parasite Schistocephalus solidus infection in a manner consistent with enhanced vulnerability to avian predators. Extensive sampling in the lake and likelihood-based modeling revealed that sticklebacks displayed a diel vertical migration, being closer to the surface at night than during the evening and early morning. Additional sampling, also coupled with a likelihood-based model

Detection of the anti-androgenic effect of endocrine disrupting environmental contaminants using in vivo and in vitro assays in the three-spined stickleback.

We have previously developed a novel in vitro assay that utilises cultures of primed female stickleback kidney cells for the screening of potential androgenic and anti-androgenic environmental contaminants. Stickleback kidney cells are natural targets for steroid hormones and are able to produce a protein, spiggin, in response to androgenic stimulation. We undertook a combined in vivo/in vitro study where we used the magnitude of spiggin production as an endpoint to test the anti-androgenic properties of the pharmaceutical androgen antagonist flutamide and three environmental contaminants: the

Bioaccumulation of some heavy metals in different tissues of Dicentrarchus labrax L, 1758, Sparus aurata L, 1758 and Mugil cephalus L, 1758 from the Camlik lagoon of the eastern coast of Mediterranean (Turkey).

In this study, bioaccumulation of the heavy metals (Fe, Zn, Cd) in the liver, gill, gonad and muscle tissues of Dicentrarchus labrax, Mugil cephalus and Sparus aurata were investigated seasonally. Camlik is the important fisheries lagoon located in The Iskenderun Bay, Mediterranean coast of Turkey. Due to heavy industrial and agricultural activities in the region, the bay has the polluted coastal waters of Turkey. Therefore, the levels of cadmium, zinc, iron were determined in the muscle in each species because of its importance for human consumption and also the liver, gill, gonad were analys

Reflex cardioventilatory responses to hypoxia in the flathead gray mullet (Mugil cephalus) and their behavioral modulation by perceived threat of predation and water turbidity.

In hypoxia, gray mullet surface to ventilate well-oxygenated water in contact with air, an adaptive response known as aquatic surface respiration (ASR). Reflex control of ASR and its behavioral modulation by perceived threat of aerial predation and turbid water were studied on mullet in a partly sheltered aquarium with free surface access. Injections of sodium cyanide (NaCN) into either the bloodstream (internal) or ventilatory water stream (external) revealed that ASR, hypoxic bradycardia, and branchial hyperventilation were stimulated by chemoreceptors sensitive to both systemic and water O2

Overall impacts of bisphenol S (BPS) on the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) in a mesocosm experiment: Relationships between biomarkers, life-history traits, and population-level effects.

Effects of Bisphenol S (BPS), a widespread substitute for Bisphenol A, were investigated on the three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) across multiple biological levels and timescales in mesocosms (semi-natural rivers). By comparing short- and long-term exposures, the aim is to identify early predictive biomarkers and establish mechanistic links between sub-organismal and population-level effects of the BPS. This study thereby contributes to the integration of these results into Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) and supports Environmental Risk Assessment (ERA). Two complementary approac

Differential regulation of ribogenesis genes throughout oogenesis in thicklip grey mullets, Chelon labrosus, preparing the maternal contribution to embryo development.

Oocytes in teleosts undergo complex changes during oogenesis, including the accumulation of ribosomal RNAs and tRNAs needed to support protein synthesis during early embryogenesis. Previous studies show that high levels of 5S rRNA and tRNAs in perinucleolar previtellogenic (PV) oocytes, and the easily calculated 5S rRNA/18S rRNA index, reliably distinguish testes from ovaries, especially when ovaries are in PV. Building on this, we examined whether the tRNA/5.8S rRNA index follows a similar pattern during oogenesis in thicklip grey mullet Chelon labrosus, a species with synchronous ovarian dev

Modulation of the stress response in wild fish is associated with variation in dissolved nitrate and nitrite.

Disruption of non-reproductive endocrine systems in wildlife by chemicals has received little attention but represents a potentially significant problem. Nitrate is a major anthropogenic contaminant in the freshwater aquatic environment and has been identified as a potential disrupter of endocrine function in aquatic animals. This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between the function of the neuroendocrine stress axis in fish and inorganic N loading along reaches of rivers receiving cumulative point source and diffuse chemical inputs. To accomplish this, the responsiveness of

An evolutionary insight into the hatching strategies of pipefish and seahorse embryos.

Syngnathiform fishes carry their eggs in a brood structure found in males. The brood structure differs from species to species: seahorses carry eggs within enclosed brood pouch, messmate pipefish carry eggs in the semi-brood pouch, and alligator pipefish carry eggs in the egg compartment on abdomen. These egg protection strategies were established during syngnathiform evolution. In the present study, we compared the hatching mode of protected embryos of three species. Electron microscopic observations revealed that alligator pipefish and messmate pipefish egg envelopes were thicker than those

Digenetic trematodes in South American sea lions from southern Brazilian waters.

The aim of this work was to perform a systematic study to detect and quantify the digenetic trematode infections in South American sea lions from the southern Brazilian coast. Twenty-four South American sea lions, Otaria flavescens (Carnivora: Otaridae), were found dead along the coast of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, between June 2010 and September of 2011. Two trematode species were found in the intestines of O. flavescens, i.e., Stephanoprora uruguayense (Digenea: Echinostomatidae) and Ascocotyle (Phagicola) longa (Digenea: Heterophyidae). Ascocotyle (P.) longa reached a prevalence of 33

Accumulation and rapid decay of non-LTR retrotransposons in the genome of the three-spine stickleback.

The diversity and abundance of non-long terminal repeat (LTR) retrotransposons (nLTR-RT) differ drastically among vertebrate genomes. At one extreme, the genome of placental mammals is littered with hundreds of thousands of copies resulting from the activity of a single clade of nLTR-RT, the L1 clade. In contrast, fish genomes contain a much more diverse repertoire of nLTR-RT, represented by numerous active clades and families. Yet, the number of nLTR-RT copies in teleostean fish is two orders of magnitude smaller than in mammals. The vast majority of insertions appear to be very recent, sugge

Hepatic transcriptomic and metabolomic responses in the Stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) exposed to ethinyl-estradiol.

An established three-spined stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) cDNA array was expanded to 14,496 probes with the addition of hepatic clones derived from subtractive and normalized libraries from control males and males exposed to model toxicants. Microarrays and one-dimensional (1)H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, together with individual protein and gene biomarkers were employed to investigate the hepatic responses of the stickleback to ethinyl-estradiol (EE(2)) exposure. Male fish were exposed via the water to EE(2), including environmentally relevant concentrations (0.1-100

A note on the correlation between rainfall and the prevalence of Gnathostoma spp. infective stage larvae in swamp eels in Thailand.

Gnathostoma spinigerum is the major causative agent of human gnathostomiasis, a parasitic zoonosis with a great variety of clinical manifestations. Generally, humans are infected by consumption of third-stage larvae (L3) of G. spinigerum in infected hosts in the form of partially cooked or uncooked food. Surveys of the contamination of Gnathostoma spp. L3 in swamp eels are useful for prevention and control of diseases and have been continuously performed in Thailand. The author performed a retrospective study on 33 previous cross-sectional surveys with geographical data and the prevalence of G

Deciphering the gonadal cell atlas of Monopterus albus and cell fate during sex reversal based on single-cell RNA sequencing.

BACKGROUND: The Monopterus albus serves as a unique model for studying sex reversal, transitioning naturally from female to male. However, the origins of male germline stem cells (GSCs) and the roles of somatic cells during sex reversal remain poorly understood. METHODS: We performed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) on ovarian, ovotestis, and testicular tissues to construct a gonadal cell atlas. RNA fluorescence in situ hybridization (RNA-FISH) validated cell subpopulations. RESULTS: Cell types of germ cells and somatic cells in gonads were identified, and their differentiation traject

An fgf21-like gene from swamp eel (Monopterus albus): Recombinant expression and its potential roles in glucose and lipid homeostasis.

Fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21) plays important roles in the regulation of glucose and lipid metabolism and energy balance in mammals. In this study, the full-length cDNA of swamp eel fgf21 was cloned. Sequence analysis showed that swamp eel FGF21 displayed high similarity with FGF21 of other vertebrates. Subsequently, a prokaryotic expression vector for swamp eel fgf21 was constructed, and recombinant FGF21 (rFGF21) was successfully induced and purified. To investigate the potential roles of swamp eel FGF21 in glucose and lipid metabolism, we examined the effects of rFGF21 on regulation o

Nortestosterone-derived synthetic progestogens do not activate the progestogen receptor of Murray-Darling rainbowfish (Melanotaenia fluviatilis) but are potent agonists of androgen receptors alpha and beta.

Synthetic progestogens derived from 19-nortestosterone can elicit a number of adverse effects in fish including decreased fecundity, altered hormone levels, disruption of normal breeding cycles, expression in females of male-specific biomarkers, development of male secondary sexual characteristics in females, and changes in the expression of steroidogenic genes. A recent in vitro study showed that a number of representatives from this class of progestins were potent agonists of fathead minnow androgen receptor (AR) and only weak agonists of progesterone receptor (PR) from the same species. Variation in the reproductive potential of Schistocephalus infected male sticklebacks is associated with 11-ketotestosterone titre.

Parasites can impact host reproduction by interfering with host endocrine systems, but the adaptive nature of such effects is disputed. Schistocephalus solidus plerocercoids are parasites of three-spined sticklebacks Gasterosteus aculeatus that are often associated with impaired host reproduction. Here, we relate reproductive behavior and physiology to levels of the androgen 11-ketotestosterone (11KT) in naturally infected and non-infected male sticklebacks from two UK populations. In one population infected males harbored heavy infections and showed uniformly reduced 11KT titres and kidney sp
