Preventing tobacco use from the start: Short- and medium-term impacts on the youth.

Adolescent substance use is a persistent global problem and a challenge for society and the public health authorities. In this paper we investigate the impact of a prevention-oriented policy implemented in Icelandic secondary schools from 1997 to 2002 (the "Drug-free Iceland" programme) on country-level smoking rates on the youth. Using a panel data source spanning from 1985 to 2010 and composed both by Iceland and a set of countries where such a type of policy was absent, we apply the Synthetic Control Method to construct the counterfactual of Iceland. Comparing Iceland with this counterfactu

Temporal Association of US Tobacco Taxation on Smoking Attributable Bladder Cancer Mortality and Disability-Adjusted Life Years.

PURPOSE: The causal link between smoking and bladder cancer (BC) development is well established but the long-term impact of tobacco taxation and health policy on BC mortality and disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) has not been fully elucidated. Given the protracted latency of carcinogenesis, this study examines whether historical changes in tobacco taxation and smoke-free laws are associated with reductions in BC disease burden and mortality in the United States. METHODS: Smoking-attributable BC mortality and DALY data, and federal and state tobacco taxation data were differenced as time

Success and challenges of tobacco control interventions among American Indians in California.

INTRODUCTION: Cigarette smoking and other forms of commercial tobacco use remain disproportionately high among American Indian communities compared with the general US population. Mainstream tobacco control strategies often have limited success in Tribal contexts, underscoring the need for culturally grounded interventions. METHODS: We conducted 30 key informant interviews with program staff and Tribal community members from 11 California Tribes participating in the California American Indian Tobacco Initiative. Interviews were conducted at two time points, transcribed, and analyzed using des

Correlation between tobacco control policies and preterm births and low birth weight in Europe.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the correlation between tobacco control policies- particularly smoking bans in work and public places-and the prevalence of preterm births and low birth weight in the European countries. METHODS: This is an ecological study and the unit of analysis set at the country level. Tobacco control data in Europe were obtained for the years 2010 and 2013 as measured by the Tobacco Control Scale (TCS), which reflects the level of implementation of tobacco control policies. Prevalence data for preterm births and low birth weight were obtained from two sources: the European Perinatal

Interrupted time series study found mixed effects of the impact of the Bavarian smoke-free legislation on pregnancy outcomes.

In 2007 the German government passed smoke-free legislation, leaving the details of implementation to the individual federal states. In January 2008 Bavaria implemented one of the strictest laws in Germany. We investigated its impact on pregnancy outcomes and applied an interrupted time series (ITS) study design to assess any changes in preterm birth, small for gestational age (primary outcomes), and low birth weight, stillbirth and very preterm birth. We included 1,236,992 singleton births, comprising 83,691 preterm births and 112,143 small for gestational age newborns. For most outcomes we o

Implementation of school tobacco policies: The advocacy coalition approach. Protocol of the ADHAirE study, a cluster randomized controlled trial.

Secondary schools still struggle to enforce their tobacco policy and to keep their learning environment smoke-free. Yet, enforcement is the key to improve the effectiveness of those policies. This article describes the ADHAirE study which aims to reduce smoking at school through an improved enforcement of the school's tobacco policy. The ADHAirE study will be carried out during 2 years in 20 Belgian secondary schools. Schools will be randomized either in the experimental or the control group. Schools in the experimental group will create an advocacy coalition involving students, staff and the

Nurses' Perspectives on Smoking Policies, Safety and Cessation Support in Psychiatric Wards: A Cross-Sectional Survey.

A high prevalence of smoking and low rates of smoking cessation interventions can be observed in psychiatric wards. A questionnaire-based, cross-sectional study was performed in five hospitals among 107 psychiatric ward nurses. The aim was to investigate nurses' views on patients' smoking practices and their influence on the safety of both the patients and medical personnel. In addition, we asked about the availability of smoking cessation support. Most of the respondents noticed the negative impacts of smoking on patients and medical personnel. Nearly a third of our respondents (29.0%) recall

Smoking policy change at a homeless shelter: attitudes and effects.

Homeless adults are exposed to more smokers and smoke in response to environmental tobacco cues more than other socioeconomically disadvantaged groups. Addressing the culture of smoking in homeless shelters through policy initiatives may support cessation and improve health in this vulnerable and understudied population. This study examined support for and expected/actual effects of a smoking ban at a homeless shelter. A 2-wave cross-sectional study with an embedded cohort was conducted in the summer of 2013 two weeks before (wave 1) and two months after (wave 2) a partial outdoor smoking ban

[Prevalence and correlates of indoor smoking bans on traditional tobacco use in Hungary in 2009 and 2022].

Introduction: Voluntary bans on smoking inside the home reduce exposure to secondhand smoke, prevent smoking uptake, and support cessation. In Hungary, limited data are available on the temporal changes and correlates of smoke-free household rules. Objective: To examine the prevalence, temporal trend, and sociodemographic correlates of voluntary bans on traditional tobacco smoking inside the home. Method: We conducted a secondary analysis of data from two surveys in 2009 and one in 2022. The unit of analysis was the household. We applied Z-tests, Cochran–Armitage trend tests, and binomial logi

Associations of Bar and Restaurant Smoking Bans With Smoking Behavior in the CARDIA Study: A 25-Year Study.

Indoor smoking bans have often been associated with reductions in smoking prevalence. However, few studies have evaluated their association with within-person changes in smoking behaviors. We linked longitudinal data from 5,105 adults aged 18-30 years at baseline from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) Study (1985-2011) to state, county, and local policies mandating 100% smoke-free bars and restaurants by census tract. We used fixed-effects models to examine the association of smoking bans with within-person change in current smoking risk, smoking intensity (smoking

Stages of change of the readiness to quit smoking among a random sample of minority Arab male smokers in Israel.

BACKGROUND: Despite advanced smoking prevention and cessation policies in many countries, the prevalence of cigarette smoking among indigenous and some ethnic minorities continues to be high. This study examined the stages of change (SOC) of the readiness to quit smoking among Arab men in Israel shortly after new regulations of free-of-charge smoking cessation workshops and subsidized medications were introduced through primary health care clinics. METHODS: We conducted a countrywide study in Israel between 2012-2013. Participants, 735 current smokers; 18-64 years old; were recruited from a s

Impact of cigarette price and tobacco control policies on youth smoking experimentation in Albania.

BACKGROUND: Albania has one of the highest smoking prevalence in Europe especially among the youth. There is a lack of evidence in Albania, as well as in most of Eastern Europe and middle-income countries, regarding the effect of price on smoking experimentation. OBJECTIVE: The study aims to assess the effect of price and tobacco control policies on youth smoking experimentation in Albania. METHODS: We used microdata from the Global Youth Tobacco Survey in Albania for 2004, 2009, 2015 and 2020. We constructed a pseudo-longitudinal dataset and estimated a split-population model to assess the

Associations between smoke-free vehicle legislation and childhood admissions to hospital for asthma in Scotland: an interrupted time-series analysis of whole-population data.

BACKGROUND: In Scotland, childhood admissions to hospital for asthma fell from March, 2006, after legislation was introduced to prohibit smoking in public places. In December, 2016, new Scottish legislation banned smoking in vehicles containing a child. We aimed to determine whether the introduction of this new legislation produced additional benefits. METHODS: We obtained data on all asthma emergency admissions to hospitals in Scotland between 2000 and 2018 for individuals younger than 16 years. We used interrupted time-series analyses to study changes in monthly incidence of asthma emergenc

Correlates of nicotine withdrawal severity in smokers during a smoke-free psychiatric hospitalization.

Psychiatric hospitals are increasingly adopting smoke-free policies. Tobacco use is common among persons with mental illness, and nicotine withdrawal (NW), which includes symptoms of depression, anxiety, anger/irritability, and sleep disturbance, may confound psychiatric assessment and treatment in the inpatient setting. This study aimed to characterize NW and correlates of NW severity in a sample of smokers hospitalized for treatment of mental illness in California. Participants (N=754) were enrolled between 2009 and 2013, and averaged 17 (SD=10) cigarettes/day prior to hospitalization. Thoug
