Feasibility and Acceptability of Group Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy for Recurrent Mood Disorders: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: Interpersonal and social rhythm therapy (IPSRT) was developed to empower patients with mood disorders by stabilizing underlying disturbances in circadian rhythms and by using strategies from interpersonal psychotherapy. Group IPSRT has not been studied with a transdiagnostic sample of patients across the life span with either major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder. METHODS: Thirty-eight outpatients, ages 26-80, with major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder in any mood state were recruited from clinics in the Netherlands and were treated with 20 sessions (two per week) o

The Impact of Group Feedback on Self-Perceptions Following Videotape Exposure in CBT for Social Anxiety Disorder.

Video feedback following social anxiety exposures improves self-perceptions. Clinical studies have not examined whether feedback from group members has incremental benefit beyond that of viewing the tape itself. Sixty-seven individuals with social anxiety disorder completed videotaped exposure during group based cognitive behavior therapy (CBT). After participants viewed their taped exposure, group members and therapists gave feedback. Participants completed ratings of anxiety and performance before and after taping their exposure, after viewing the video themselves, and after receiving group

Peer Group Identification as Determinant of Youth Behavior and the Role of Perceived Social Support in Problem Gambling.

Gambling opportunities have increased rapidly during recent years. Previous research shows that gambling is a popular activity among youth, which may contribute to problem gambling. This study examined how social identification with online and offline peer groups associates with youth problem gambling behavior and if perceived social support buffers this relationship. Data were gathered with an online survey with 1212 American and 1200 Finnish participants between 15 and 25 years of age. Measures included the South Oaks Gambling Screen for problem gambling, and items for peer group identificat

Group therapy as a social context for aphasia recovery: a pilot, observational study in an acute rehabilitation hospital.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with aphasia often receive therapy from a speech-language pathologist during acute rehabilitation. The literature demonstrates that group-based therapy provides a natural, social environment for language rehabilitation in mild-moderate and/or chronic aphasia; however, the communication of persons with acute, severe non-fluent aphasia during group treatment has not been fully explored. OBJECTIVE: This observational study investigated patient communication during acute rehabilitation. The primary objective was to determine whether participants initiate more communication

The course of the working alliance during virtual reality and exposure group therapy for social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Psychoanalytic theory and some empirical research suggest the working alliance follows a "rupture and repair" pattern over the course of therapy, but given its emphasis on collaboration, cognitive behavioral therapy may yield a different trajectory. AIMS: The current study compares the trajectory of the working alliance during two types of cognitive behavioral therapy for social anxiety disorder - virtual reality exposure therapy (VRE) and exposure group therapy (EGT), one of which (VRE) has been proposed to show lower levels of working alliance due to the physical barriers posed

Social support and education groups for single mothers: a randomized controlled trial of a community-based program.

BACKGROUND: Members of families headed by single mothers are at increased risk of psychosocial disadvantage and mental health problems. We assessed the effect of a community-based program of social support and education groups for single mothers of young children on maternal well-being and parenting. METHODS: We recruited 116 single mothers of children 3 to 9 years old through community advertisements. Eligible mothers were randomly assigned either to participate in a 10-week program of group sessions (1.5 hours per week) offering social support and education, with a parallel children's activ

Clients' expectancies and their relationship to pretreatment symptomatology and outcome of cognitive-behavioral group treatment for social phobia.

The present study examined the expectancies of clients with social phobia that they would benefit from cognitive-behavioral group treatment. Lower expectancies for positive outcome were related to greater severity of social phobia, duration of social phobia, and depression. Lower expectancies were also reported by individuals with the generalized subtype of social phobia, but expectancies were not further influenced by the presence of other Axis I disorders. Expectancy ratings did not differ between clients who dropped out of treatment and those who did not, but, after pretreatment severity of

Exploring Moderators and Mediators of the Outcome of Group Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Compared With Group Schema Therapy for Social Anxiety Disorder and Comorbid Avoidant Personality Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Identifying moderators and mediators in a randomised controlled trial is important to improve treatment effectiveness and elucidate mechanisms of change. Putative moderating and mediating variables of treatment outcome of 30 weekly sessions of group cognitive behavioural therapy (GCBT) and group schema therapy (GST) were investigated in a sample of 154 patients with both social anxiety disorder (SAD) and avoidant personality disorder (AVPD). Significant improvements were realised in both modalities at 3 and 12 months after treatment. No significant differences between conditions we

Cognitive behavioral social rhythm group therapy versus present centered group therapy for veterans with posttraumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder: A randomized controlled pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive Behavioral Social Rhythm Group Therapy (CBSRT) is a chronobiologically-informed group therapy designed to stabilize social rhythms in veterans with comorbid combat-related PTSD and major depressive disorder (MDD). This randomized controlled pilot trial is the first to examine feasibility and preliminary efficacy of group CBSRT as compared to group Present Centered Therapy (PCT), a well-characterized active attention, psychotherapy condition. METHODS: A total of 43 male veterans with combat-related PTSD, MDD, and disruptions in sleep or daily routine were randomly assigne

Understanding female smoking in urban China: motivations, stigma and shifting social norms-a qualitative focus group study.

BACKGROUND: Although female smoking prevalence in China remains low, emerging evidence suggests that social acceptance may be increasing, with tobacco marketing increasingly targeting women. This study explored women's smoking behaviours, motivations and societal perceptions toward this in urban China. METHODS: Between May and October 2019, 28 semistructured focus groups were conducted in Beijing, Changsha and Shenzhen with 288 participants: 12 groups of female smokers, 6 of female former smokers, 6 of female never-smokers and 4 of men. Participants were recruited both online and offline, and

Imagery-enhanced v. verbally-based group cognitive behavior therapy for social anxiety disorder: a randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavior therapy (CBT) is effective for most patients with a social anxiety disorder (SAD) but a substantial proportion fails to remit. Experimental and clinical research suggests that enhancing CBT using imagery-based techniques could improve outcomes. It was hypothesized that imagery-enhanced CBT (IE-CBT) would be superior to verbally-based CBT (VB-CBT) on pre-registered outcomes. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial of IE-CBT v. VB-CBT for social anxiety was completed in a community mental health clinic setting. Participants were randomized to IE (n = 53) or VB (n =

Imagery enhancements increase the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural group therapy for social anxiety disorder: a benchmarking study.

Emerging evidence suggests that imagery-based techniques may enhance the effectiveness of traditional verbal-linguistic cognitive interventions for emotional disorders. This study extends an earlier pilot study by reporting outcomes from a naturalistic trial of an imagery-enhanced cognitive behavioural group therapy (IE-CBGT, n = 53) protocol for social anxiety disorder (SAD), and comparing outcomes to historical controls who completed a predominantly verbally-based group protocol (n = 129). Patients were consecutive referrals from health professionals to a community clinic specialising in anx

Exploring the relationships between fear-related xenophobia, perceptions of out-group entitativity, and social contact in Norway.

An internet-related survey distributed to Norwegian students explored predictors of fear-related xenophobia toward immigrants. Specifically, this study examined a new social construct called "entitativity" (i.e., the extent to which out-group members are perceived as bonded together in a cohesive or organized unit), as well as frequency of informal social contact and valence of a recent encounter in relation to certain xenophobic attitudes. Correlational and multiple regression analyses indicated that perceived out-group entitativity was a moderate predictor of fear-related xenophobia. Volunta

Factors affecting treatment efficacy in social phobia: the use of video feedback and individual vs. group formats.

This meta-analysis assessed two potential moderators of treatment efficacy in social phobia: video feedback, and treatment format (i.e., individual vs. group). Eighteen recent (2000-2006) trials including a total of 511 participants were sampled. Effect sizes (Cohen's d's) were calculated for each trial while correcting for measurement error. The Q statistic was used to test (a) heterogeneity across trials and (b) potential moderators. Results indicated that use of video feedback was not a moderator of treatment efficacy and did not significantly affect effect sizes. In contrast, treatment for
