The interplay between patients' and family members' attitudes toward mobility and actual mobility in hospitalized older adults.

BACKGROUND: Reduced mobility during hospitalization is a significant clinical challenge for older adults, contributing to functional decline. Grounded in Bandura's Social Cognitive Theory (SCT), which posits that personal factors and social environment interact dynamically to shape behavior, this study examined the interplay between patients' and family members' attitudes toward in-hospital mobility as factors of actual mobility in hospitalized older adults. METHODS: A prospective cross-sectional observational study included 140 dyads of older adult patients (≥65 years) and their family membe

The child and family experience of power mobility: a qualitative synthesis.

AIM: The aim of this study was to critically synthesize qualitative evidence regarding the child and family experience of power mobility, and to examine how this evidence fits with current theoretical concepts. METHOD: Electronic database/hand searches were undertaken in September 2012 and updated in February 2014. The searches were restricted to qualitative studies published in English before February 2014 that included at least one child under the age of 19 with a disability and described an outcome related to the use of power mobility. Inclusion criteria were set a priori. Two reviewers in

Tele Tai Chi for people aging with mobility disabilities: Novel methodology and structured adaptation approach.

UNLABELLED: Many people aging with mobility disabilities experience barriers engaging in exercise programs and social events in-person and could benefit from virtual programs that make participation more accessible. The Tele Tai Chi clinical trial is assessing the acceptability and effectiveness of an evidence-based in-person Tai Chi program for older adults, Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention (seated version), when adapted to be an online group intervention (via videoconferencing) with moderated social time for individuals aging with mobility disabilities. Specifically, we are examinin

Did Social Capital Protect Mental Health from Social Mixing Restrictions and Spatial Immobility during the COVID-19 Pandemic? A Longitudinal Analysis of Individual- and Contextual-Level Local Social Capital.

This study investigates whether local social capital (neighbor networks and norms of trust/reciprocity) buffered the impact of mixing/mobility restrictions on psychological distress during the COVID-19 pandemic. It draws on two nationally representative panel surveys: the UK Household Longitudinal Study (UKHLS) Mainstage survey (n = 31,805 person-observations) and UKHLS COVID-19 survey (n = 22,933 person-observations), a subsample of the Mainstage survey respondents followed during the pandemic. Individual-level and (prepandemic/peripandemic) contextual-level local social capital indicators ar

Neural mechanism underlying depressive-like state associated with social status loss.

Downward social mobility is a well-known mental risk factor for depression, but its neural mechanism remains elusive. Here, by forcing mice to lose against their subordinates in a non-violent social contest, we lower their social ranks stably and induce depressive-like behaviors. These rank-decline-associated depressive-like behaviors can be reversed by regaining social status. In vivo fiber photometry and single-unit electrophysiological recording show that forced loss, but not natural loss, generates negative reward prediction error (RPE). Through the lateral hypothalamus, the RPE strongly a…

A Motivational Physical Activity Intervention for Improving Mobility in Older Korean Americans.

There has been limited empirical support for interventions designed to promote physical activity targeting mobility in racially diverse older adults. This study aims to examine the effects of a Motivational Physical Activity Intervention (MPAI) on social resource, behavioral change process, physical activity, and mobility variables in sedentary older Korean Americans. A quasi-experimental, repeated-measure, pre- and post-tests design was used. Sixty-four community-dwelling, sedentary older Korean Americans (n = 33 for MPAI group, n = 31 for Attention Control group) participated in the study. T

The Association between Public Transportation and Social Isolation in Older Adults: A Scoping Review of the Literature.

Inadequate public transportation was recognized as a barrier to social participation, especially for older adults in rural communities and with mobility issues. Older adults will not benefit from opportunities to engage with their community and maintain social networks if they are unable to access them. The purpose of this scoping review was to make recommendations for further research and to summarize areas for improvement identified in the literature that will aid in the development of public transportation initiatives that can better address social isolation for older adults (≥ 55 years of

Network Types and Functional Health in Old Age: It is Not Just the Size of the Network That Matters.

OBJECTIVES: Findings on the effect of network size and support on functional health are mixed. We examine whether network types, that simultaneously incorporate multiple network characteristics, are associated with functional health in late life. METHODS: Data are from the National Social Life, Health, and Aging Project (N = 3005). We estimated the longitudinal effect of membership in five multidimensional network types on disability in six activities of daily living using negative binomial regression, and on mobility (assessed using a timed walk test) using a generalized linear mixed model.

Trajectories of social activities from middle age to old age and late-life disability: a 36-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVES: to examine the association between 34-year trajectories of social activity, from middle age to old age and late-life disability. METHODS: data from the Swedish Level of Living Survey (LNU) and the Swedish Panel Study of the Oldest Old (SWEOLD) were used. LNU data from 1968, 1981, 1991 and 2000 were merged with SWEOLD data from 1992, 2002 and 2004 to create a longitudinal data set with five observation periods. Trajectories of social activities covered 1968-2002, and late-life disability was measured in 2004. The sample consisted of 729 individuals aged 33-61 at baseline (1968), wh

Examining the association between early life social adversity and BMI changes in childhood: a life course trajectory analysis.

BACKGROUND: A number of studies have found associations between multiple aspects of social adversity and obesity in childhood, yet this research has largely been limited to cross-sectional data. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to address this limitation by using life course trajectory methods to determine whether multiple aspects of social adversity in early childhood are associated with changes in body mass index (BMI) throughout childhood. METHODS: Associations between multiple measures of social adversity from birth to 4 years and subsequent BMI trajectories to age 17 were examined in 7021 c

Disability, resources, role demands and mobility handicap.

Research on disablement highlights a wide variability in the impact of disabling conditions on individuals' lives. However, in most of this work, the relationships between impairment/disability and features of individuals' social and physical environments are not specified conceptually. Recent conceptual work in the context of the International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities, and Handicaps (ICIDH) suggests that the impact of impairment/disability on individuals' lives is contingent on levels of resources and other aspects of social context. The research question addressed in this

Distinct mobility facets and their association with intrinsic capacity domains in (pre-)frail community-dwelling older adults: an application of the unified framework for measuring mobility.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining mobility is essential for healthy aging. A recently proposed unified framework conceptualizes mobility through three facets: actual mobility, perceived mobility, and locomotor capacity. Identifying determinants of each facet is important for understanding mobility and informing tailored mobility-focused interventions. This is particularly relevant for (pre-)frail older adults, who are especially vulnerable to mobility decline. The aim of this study was to examine associations of the three mobility facets with intrinsic capacity (IC) domains and environmental factors in
