Fair pay, performance optimizer, or status marker? The social meaning of remuneration for India's women community health workers.

What kind of remuneration is appropriate for a Community Health Worker? The literature on CHW incentives largely emphasizes their impact on worker motivations and on health outcomes, including on non-incentivized outcomes. While these are relevant, they miss what Viviana Zelizer calls the social meaning of money, that is, how social relations and cultural values shape and constrain the qualitative life of different monies. I draw on 12 months of ethnographic fieldwork, including 80 interviews, conducted in 2018-19 in north India on Accredited Social Health Activists or ASHAs, the world's large

Problematic Social Media Use, Availability Distress, and Digital Status Seeking: Links to Friendship Network Structure among U.S. Adolescents.

Social media provides youth with means to pursue and satisfy developmental needs for social belonging and status. Among multiple ways that youth engage with social media, availability distress, problematic social media use, and digital status seeking reflect how developmental needs of belonging and status are expressed in digital contexts. We examined how these manifestations of belonging and status needs were associated with friendship network structure. We tested how problematic social media use, availability distress, and digital status seeking were linked to similarity, popularity, and act

Does Social Health Insurance Close the Gap: The Case of Socioeconomic Status and Preterm Low-Birth-Weight Survival.

Using a retrospective cohort study design, we report empirical evidence on the effect of parental socioeconomic status, primary care, and health care expenditure associated with preterm or low-birth-weight (PLBW) babies on their mortality (neonatal, postneonatal, and under-5 mortality) under a universal health care system. A total of 4668 singleton PLBW babies born in Taiwan between January 1 and December 31, 2001, are extracted from a population-based medical claims database for a follow-up of up to 5 years. Multivariate survival models suggest the positive effect of higher parental income is

Social isolation and depressive symptoms among older adults with different functional status in China: A latent class analysis.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation is considered a risk factor for depression in older adults. Since there may be heterogeneity in the experience of social isolation, we aimed to investigate social isolation patterns and their association with depressive symptoms, for older adults with different functional status separately. METHODS: This study used data from the fifth wave of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). A total of 8262 participants, defined as older adults aged 60 years and above, were included in the analysis, comprising 49.9 % (n = 4124) men and 50.1 % (n = 4138)

[THE ROLE OF SOCIAL HYGIENIC FACTORS AND SANITARY CULTURE OF POPULATION IN FORMATION OF STOMATOLOGICAL STATUS OF RURAL RESIDENTS OF THE REPUBLIC OF DAGESTAN].

The diseases of oral cavity belong to the most widespread non-communicable pathologies, significantly affecting quality of life and the economy. In Russia, the prevalence of dental caries and periodontal diseases remains high, especially in the rural population, where availability of stomatological care is limited. In the Republic of Dagestan, the situation is complicated by natural climatic, cultural and linguistic characteristics, that determine the necessity of local evaluation of factors of stomatological health.

Parents differ in their sensitivity to the environment: An investigation of the relationship between socioeconomic status, social support, and child maltreatment risks.

BACKGROUND: Socioeconomic status (SES) and social support are widely examined factors of child maltreatment. However, it remains unclear whether these factors influence all parents equally. OBJECTIVE: Guided by the environmental sensitivity framework, we examined whether environmental sensitivity, a personality trait describing individuals' susceptibility to external environments, moderates the direct associations of SES and social support with maltreatment risks and their indirect associations via financial stress and psychological distress. METHODS: A total of 612 parents of primary school

Narcissistic status pursuit in everyday social life: A within-person process approach to the behavioral and emotional dynamics of narcissism.

Status pursuit has been emphasized as a key motivational factor underlying narcissism, but research has just begun to unravel the processes by which more narcissistic individuals pursue status in their everyday social interactions. In this article, we combine process models of narcissistic status pursuit with three-factor models of narcissism to test whether different aspects of narcissism (i.e., agentic, antagonistic, and neurotic narcissism) can be characterized by stronger reactivity to different kinds of status perceptions (i.e., the perceived assignment of status, attack on status, and ne

Turning the lens in the study of precarity: On experimental social psychology's acquiescence to the settler-colonial status quo in historic Palestine.

This review examines the coloniality infused within the conduct and third reporting of experimental research in what is commonly referred to as the 'Israeli-Palestinian conflict'. Informed by a settler colonial framework and decolonial theory, our review measured the appearance of sociopolitical terms and critically analysed the reconciliation measures. We found that papers were three times more likely to describe the context through the framework of intractable conflict compared to occupation. Power asymmetry was often acknowledged and then flattened via, for instance, adjacent mentions of Is

The effect of minority status and social context on the development of depression and anxiety: a longitudinal study of Puerto Rican descent youth.

Few longitudinal studies have explored to date whether minority status in disadvantaged neighborhoods conveys risk for negative mental health outcomes, and the mechanisms possibly leading to such risk. We investigated how minority status influences four developmental mental health outcomes in an ethnically homogeneous sample of Puerto Rican youth. We tested models of risk for major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), depressive and anxiety symptoms (DAS), and psychological distress, as Puerto Rican youth (aged 5-13 years) transitioned to early adulthood (15-29 yea
