Resilience to Stigma in Medical, Social, and Employment Contexts Among People Who Inject Drugs in Rural Ohio: Adapting the 10-Item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale.

People who inject drugs (PWID) experience stigma related to drug use and HIV prevention, which can impede engagement with the HIV prevention continuum. Resilience may buffer against stigma's harmful effects, but limited research has examined how resilience operates across different social contexts and stigma types among PWID. Using qualitative interviews and cognitive interviews, we adapted the 10-item Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale to measure resilience to drug use-related stigma and HIV prevention-related stigma among PWID in rural Appalachian Ohio in three contexts: medical, social, and e

The Associations among Perceived Courtesy Stigma, Health and Social Behaviours in Family Members and Friends of People Who Use Substances: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Study.

Background: The stigma and discrimination experienced by individuals with an alcohol/substance use disorder often extends to the family members and friends who provide care, which is known as courtesy stigma. This courtesy stigma can lead to isolation, poor mental health and might impact the quality-of-care these individuals provide. The aim of this study was to examine the frequency of experienced courtesy stigma/discrimination in individuals in a family support service for a loved one's substance use, and to examine any cross-sectional associations with changes in mood, health- and social-re

Associations of gender identity with sexual behaviours, social stigma and sexually transmitted infections among adults who have sex with men in Abuja and Lagos, Nigeria.

INTRODUCTION: Sexual and gender minority populations are disproportionately affected by the global syndemic of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). We hypothesized that transgender women (TGW) and non-binary individuals in Nigeria have more STIs than cis-gender men who have sex with men (cis-MSM), and that experiences of stigma and sexual practices differ between these three groups. METHODS: From 2013 to 2020, TRUST/RV368 enrolled adults assigned male sex at birth who reported anal sex with men in Abuja and Lagos, Nigeria. Participants were tested for STIs and completed quest

Association between perceived HIV stigma, social support, resilience, self-esteem, and depressive symptoms among HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM) in Nanjing, China.

Among Chinese HIV-positive men who have sex with men (MSM), high levels of depression are common. The association between HIV and depression is attributed to several factors, particularly HIV-related stigma. However, to date, how HIV-related stigma leads to depression among Chinese HIV-positive MSM is still unclear. As such, this study aims to examine the relationships between perceived HIV stigma, social support, resilience, self-esteem, and depressive symptoms among HIV-positive MSM in China. We conducted a cross-sectional survey study among 347 HIV-positive MSM from July to August 2016 in N

"If there was no stigma around it, I would tell people": perspectives of UK youth living with perinatally acquired HIV, their social networks and healthcare professionals on HIV status sharing.

Sharing one's HIV status with others is complex for youth with perinatally acquired HIV (PAH). However, the support from sharing one's HIV status may assist with HIV-related challenges. This study explored barriers and facilitators of HIV status sharing among UK-based youth living with PAH. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with ten youth with PAH, ten members of their social networks and five HIV professionals, this study examined the complex relational nature of disclosure. The data were examined using thematic analysis. While many youths expressed a desire to be open, sharing was shaped

Prevalence of common mental disorder and its association with perceived stigma and social support among people living with HIV/AIDS in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: When common mental disorders (CMD) co-occur with HIV/AIDS, they can complicate patient diagnosis, help-seeking behaviors, quality of life, treatment outcomes, and drug adherence. Thus, estimating the pooled prevalence of CMD and its association with perceived stigma and social support among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in Ethiopia could potentially support policymakers and health professionals to understand the disease burden and set a solution to improve the mental well-being of PLWHA. METHODS: Popular databases such as PubMed, SCOPUS, EMBASE, and Psych-INFO as well as Goo

Exploring social inclusion strategies for public health research and practice: The use of participatory visual methods to counter stigmas surrounding street-based substance abuse in Colombia.

This paper presents the participatory visual research design and findings from a qualitative assessment of the social impact of bazuco and inhalant/glue consumption among street youth in Bogotá, Colombia. The paper presents the visual methodologies our participatory action research (PAR) team employed in order to identify and overcome the stigmas and discrimination that street youth experience in society and within state-sponsored drug rehabilitation programmes. I call for critical reflection regarding the broad application of the terms 'participation' and 'participatory' in visual research an

Longitudinal Analysis of the Relationship Between Internalized HIV Stigma, Perceived Social Support, Resilience, and Depressive Symptoms Among People Living with HIV in China: A Four-Wave Model.

Depression is one of the most common mental health problems among people living with HIV (PLWH). However, the longitudinal psychological mechanism underlying the link of internalized HIV stigma and depressive symptoms remains a research gap. This study attempted to articulate how and to what extent perceived social support and resilience mediate the longitudinal associations between internalized HIV stigma and depressive symptoms. A sample consisting of 1,098 Chinese PLWH (Mage = 38.63, SD = 9.20; 63.9% male) with a six-month interval and four waves of follow-up was used in the current study.

The relationship between HIV-related stigma and HIV self-management among men who have sex with men: The chain mediating role of social support and self-efficacy.

HIV infection becomes a manageable disease, and self-management is one of the key indicators of achieving optimal health outcomes. Men who have sex with men (MSM) living with HIV face many psychosocial challenges when managing HIV infection, such as sexual minority pressure and HIV-related stigma. Higher perceived HIV-related stigma had been related to low self-management. However, the mechanisms underlying the association between HIV-related stigma and HIV self-management are unclear. Two possible mediators include social support and self-efficacy. This study aimed to examine the relationship

"…Society is, at the end of the day, still going to stigmatize you no matter which way": A qualitative study of the impact of stigma on social support during unintended pregnancy in early adulthood.

Unintended pregnancy in adolescence and early adulthood is stigmatized in the United States because it deviates from social norms that consider young people's sexuality as a social problem. While limited, prior research has found that this stigma prevents young people from telling people in their lives about their pregnancies, for fear of judgment or negative reactions. We hypothesized that this selective disclosure of unintended pregnancy due to stigma would reduce the social support available to young pregnant people at a particularly vulnerable time-social support that we know is important

A Novel Social Network Approach to Measure Intersectional Stigma Among Latino Men Who Have Sex With Men in San Diego, California (NEXUS): Protocol for a Longitudinal Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Latino men who have sex with men (LMSM) account for a disproportionate and growing number of HIV diagnoses in the United States. Intersectional stigma remains a key driver of HIV inequities; however, most quantitative intersectional stigma measures are limited and do not consider the larger social context. OBJECTIVE: NEXUS is a longitudinal cohort study that will use social network methods and theory to rigorously measure intersectional stigma among LMSM and quantify the longitudinal association between intersectional stigma and HIV prevention outcomes. METHODS: We will prospecti

The Association Between Amygdala Subfield-Related Functional Connectivity and Stigma Reduction 12 Months After Social Contacts: A Functional Neuroimaging Study in a Subgroup of a Randomized Controlled Trial.

Social contact is one of the best methods for reducing stigma, and the effect may be associated with emotional response and social cognition. The amygdala is a key region of these functions and can be divided into three subregions, each of which has a different function and connectivity. We investigated whether the amygdala subregion-related functional connectivity is associated with the effect of anti-stigma interventions on reducing mental health-related stigma in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) over 12 months. Healthy young adults [n = 77, age, mean (SD) = 21.23 (0.94) years; male, n =
