A methodology is presented for the simulation of complex high molecular weight polymers, with a primary focus on reproducing the structure of Nafion® proton exchange membranes. Enhanced computational efficiency is achieved in comparison to commonly employed Monte Carlo techniques by implementing random insertions of long polymer chains followed by a ghost chain randomization process. Dissipative particle dynamics is applied to relax strongly overlapped configurations and to access the long time scales necessary to capture the crystallization process. The developed protocol first relaxes soft p

Recent advancements in wearable sensor technologies have enabled real-time monitoring of physiological and biochemical signals, opening new opportunities for personalized healthcare applications. However, conventional wearable devices often depend on rigid electronics components for signal transduction, processing, and wireless communications, leading to compromised signal quality due to the mechanical mismatches with the soft, flexible nature of human skin. Additionally, current computing technologies face substantial challenges in efficiently processing these vast datasets, with limitations

In the last few years, we witnessed numerous episodes of terrorist attacks and menaces in public crowded places. The necessity of better surveillance in these places pushed the development of new automated solutions to spot and notify possible menaces as fast as possible. In this work, we propose a novel approach to create a decentralized architecture to manage patrolling drones and cameras exploiting lightweight protocols used in the internet of things (IoT) domain. Through the adoption of the mist computing paradigm it is possible to give to all the object of the smart ecosystem a cognitive

Malignant ureteral obstruction may lead to impaired renal function and requires drainage by a percutaneous nephrostomy tube or an internal ureteric stent. Usage of stiff tandem ureteral stents may decrease stent failure rates. In this paper we combined computational and in vitro models to examine the flow in a malignant ureteral obstruction (MUO) managed by 4 methods of drainage: single soft stent, single stiff stent, soft tandem ureteral stents, and stiff tandem ureteral stents. Pressure at the renal pelvis was the primary outcome of the computational and in vitro models. Different drainage m

Facial soft tissue thickness is a key parameter in forensic craniofacial identification, reflecting the anatomical relationship between the skull and the overlying soft tissues. This study characterizes the spatial correspondence between cranial (craniometric) and facial (cephalometric) landmarks in a Spanish adult population through a three-dimensional vector-based approach applied to computed tomography data. CT scans from 459 healthy individuals (264 males, 195 females; aged 18-60 years) were analyzed. A total set of 12 cephalometric and craniometric landmarks were selected. For each pair o

The management of patients with dento-maxillofacial deformities is based on assessments of the dental occlusion - facial skeleton - soft tissues triad. As societal demands and surgical practices have evolved, facial soft tissues have moved to the forefront of considerations in orthognathic surgery. Techniques are therefore required to analyze facial soft tissues objectively and reproducibly, for diagnosis, preoperative planning, and follow-up. Several technologies are currently capable of providing three-dimensional (3D) models of the face, either by 3D reconstruction of traditional computed t

In this current era, biomedical big data handling is a challenging task. Interestingly, the integration of multi-modal data, followed by significant feature mining (gene signature detection), becomes a daunting task. Remembering this, here, we proposed a novel framework, namely, three-factor penalized, non-negative matrix factorization-based multiple kernel learning with soft margin hinge loss (3PNMF-MKL) for multi-modal data integration, followed by gene signature detection. In brief, limma, employing the empirical Bayes statistics, was initially applied to each individual molecular profile,

Diagnostic accuracy in medical imaging depends on high-quality multimodal image fusion (MMIF). It improves image quality by combining data from diverse imaging modalities. However, many existing fusion approaches fail to capture distinct information from diverse modalities, resulting in an incomplete fused image and potentially a misleading, incorrect diagnosis. To address these issues, we propose a new approach to the MMIF framework that incorporates a neutrosophic fuzzy set (NFS) with a feature extraction and arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA), which are designed to eliminate the uncert

Certain rough set lattices induced by binary relations form almost disjoint unions of Boolean algebras, a subclass of orthomodular lattices that captures quantum-like structure. In empirical data analysis, however, rough set lattices rarely realize this ideal form exactly. To quantify approximate similarity to such structures, we introduce numerical indices for rough set lattices. Simulation experiments based on controlled perturbations of binary relations show that the proposed indices distinguish structured perturbations from density-matched random baselines and remain informative under subs

The interaction between craniofacial structure assessed by lateral cephalometry, and tongue, soft palate, and upper airway size determined from computed tomography (CT) scans was examined in 25 control subjects and 80 patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). On the basis of the cephalometric analyses, the patients with OSA had retruded mandibles with larger ANB angle differences, elongated maxillary and mandibular incisors and mandibular molars, and high total upper and lower face heights The computed tomographic evaluations revealed that patients with OSA also had larger tongue, soft pala

BACKGROUND: Facial feminization surgery (FFS) involves bony modifications of the forehead, chin, and mandible. Accurately estimating the millimeter-level bony modification required to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome remains a challenge. Presented is the first analysis comparing bone anatomic changes to perceived soft tissue changes in FFS.
METHODS: Computed tomography (CT) scans were obtained pre- and postoperatively, while three-dimensional (3D) photographs were acquired preoperatively and ≥6 months postoperatively (N = 70). Cephalometric and anthropometric landmarks were used to calcu

The purpose of the study was to provide a description of normal cross-sectional anatomy of the camel nasal and oral cavities using computed tomography (CT) and macroscopic cross-sections. Transverse images of two isolated camel cadaver heads were obtained by an axial CT equipment. Computed tomography scans were processed with a detailed algorithm using nasal and soft tissue windows settings and compared with the corresponding frozen cross-sections of the heads, to assist in the accurate identification of nasal and oral structures. In our study, nasal window provided excellent anatomic details

OBJECTIVE: Cardiac metastasis is a highly life-threatening condition because it leads to cardiac failure. However, it is difficult to diagnose because its precise clinical features are unknown. Here, we report 11 cases of cardiac metastasis from soft-tissue sarcoma, and discuss its diagnosis and treatment.
METHODS: Of 641 patients with soft-tissue sarcoma treated in our institute between 1996 and 2009, we retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 11 patients whose cardiac metastases were diagnosed while they were alive.
RESULTS: The most common primary tumor was leiomyosarcoma (n= 5),

The present study aimed to investigate the anatomical, ultrasonographic, radiographic and computed tomographic parameters of the normal temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and related structures in dogs. Ten clinically healthy adult mesocephalic dogs (8 live and 2 cadavers), aged 2 to 4 years, were included in this study. Gross anatomical dissection was performed in 2 cadaveric dogs to validate the ultrasonographic features of the TMJ. Radiography provided visualization of bony structures of the TMJ, but images were superimposed on surrounding structures. Computed tomography produced excellent and i

A plasmacytoma is a cancerous growth of abnormal plasma cells that arise within osseous or soft tissue structures. In soft tissue structures, plasmacytomas can present as solitary or multiple masses in the absence of systemic involvement. Solitary plasmacytomas can be subcategorized as extramedullary plasmacytoma (derived from plasma cells located in soft tissues) or osseous plasmacytoma (derived from plasma cells located in the bone marrow). Infrequently, these tumors can arise as extramedullary lesions from the pancreas and present similarly to other tumors, such as pancreatic neuroendocrine

The design of robotic graspers that can safely interact with deformable, damage-prone materials such as fruits, vegetables, and biological tissues remains an ongoing challenge in robotics. Conventional robotic graspers made of mostly rigid materials have limited compliance and tactile sensing, reducing their applicability to contact-rich manipulation of soft objects. In contrast, humans and animals can interact with their environments safely and intelligently through their bodies' structural properties and nervous systems' computational capabilities. In this article, we present the design and
