Fooling your feelings: artificially induced referred sensations are linked to a modulation of the primary somatosensory cortex.

Recent studies demonstrated tactile illusions in healthy subjects by manipulating visual and tactile information. For example, a rubber hand … tactile illusions can alter early sensory processing, we were interested in the role of the primary somatosensory cortex (SI) during this kind of illusion. Thus, we manipulated the visual and tactile information in eight healthy subjects. The participants were stimulated on their fifth digit (D5) while watching a video, which showed a life-sized hand where the first d …

Enhancement of synaptic strength in the somatosensory cortex following nerve injury does not parallel behavioural alterations.

Following infraorbital nerve transection, underlying mechanisms of the altered synaptic strength were studied in rat barrel cortex slice experiments. In addition to the in vitro electrophysiological studies, open-field tests were run to detect possible behavioural changes associated with cortical oversensitization. Enhanced NMDA receptor-mediated component of the evoked field response appeared in the barrel cortex after nerve injury. The alteration was transient, very distinct on the first day following injury, and almost returned to normal level by the end of the second week. Behavioural chan

Converging patterns of inputs from oral structures in the postcentral somatosensory cortex of conscious macaque monkeys.

Single neuronal activities were recorded in the oral region of the postcentral gyrus in conscious Japanese monkeys. Among 5,756 neurons isolated, receptive fields (RFs) and submodalities were identified in 1,502 neurons in area 3b, 970 in area 1, and 1,461 in area 2. The relative incidence of neurons that had bilateral RFs increased gradually upon moving caudally from area 3b to area 2 (bilateral integration). A total of 276 neurons had bimaxillary RFs covering both the maxillary and mandibular divisions of the trigeminal nerve, such as the upper and lower lips, upper and lower teeth, palate a

Bilateral receptive field neurons in the hindlimb region of the postcentral somatosensory cortex in awake macaque monkeys.

Single-neuron activities were recorded in the hindlimb region of the primary somatosensory cortex and part of area 5 in awake Japanese monkeys. A total of 1050 units were isolated from five hemispheres of four animals. Receptive fields (RFs) and submodalities were identified for 90% of isolated neurons in areas 3a and 3b. The percentage decreased as the recoding site moved to the more caudal areas. Deep or skin submodality neurons were dominant in area 3a or area 3b, respectively. Deep submodality neurons increased in more caudal areas and were the majority in areas 2 and 5. These observations…

[Long-lasting changes of irritability in the somatosensory cortex of rabbits following tetanic stimulation of the tooth pulp].

Tetanic stimulation of the tooth pulp produced long lasting increases in potentials released by stimulation of the tooth pulp with single stimuli in the sensomotor cortex of rabbits. Stimulation with 200 impulses/sec for 5 sec produced changes of irritability that are demonstrable for 10-50 min depending on the intensity of stimulation. The lower rate limit for producing such changes is 25 impulses/sec. At a rate of 200 impulses/sec, a stimulation time of 25 msec was necessary to produce these changes. The postexcitatory depression occuring after single stimuli within 10-40 msec was increased

Comparison of somatosensory cortex excitability between migraine and "strict-criteria" tension-type headache: a magnetoencephalographic study.

Tension-type headache (TTH) and migraine are both common types of headaches. Despite distinct symptoms, TTH and migraine are highly comorbid … paired-pulse electrical stimulations, the gating responses obtained from the contralateral primary somatosensory cortex differed between groups. The first response, which reflected the preactivation excitability, was smaller in the migraine group (29.54 ± 2.31 pAm) compared with the TTH group (79.76 ± 8.36, P < 0.001) and controls (59.95 ± 4.26, P = 0.006). The gatin …

Long-term plasticity in adult somatosensory cortex: functional reorganization after surgical removal of an arteriovenous malformation.

The temporal scale of neuroplasticity following acute alterations in brain structure due to neurosurgical intervention is still under debate. We conducted a longitudinal study with the objective of investigating the postoperative changes in a patient who underwent cerebrovascular surgery and who subsequently lost proprioception in the fingers of her right hand. The results show increased activation in contralesional somatosensory areas, additional recruitment of premotor and posterior parietal areas, and changes in functional connectivity with left postcentral gyrus. These findings demonstrate

Simultaneous top-down modulation of the primary somatosensory cortex and thalamic nuclei during active tactile discrimination.

The rat somatosensory system contains multiple thalamocortical loops (TCLs) that altogether process, in fundamentally different ways, tactile stimuli delivered passively or actively sampled. To elucidate potential top-down mechanisms that govern TCL processing in awake, behaving animals, we simultaneously recorded neuronal ensemble activity across multiple cortical and thalamic areas while rats performed an active aperture discrimination task. Single neurons located in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1), the ventroposterior medial, and the posterior medial thalamic nuclei of the trigeminal …

Connections of the ventral granular frontal cortex of macaques with perisylvian premotor and somatosensory areas: anatomical evidence for somatic representation in primate frontal association cortex.

In macaque monkeys with injections of tritiated amino acids or horseradish peroxidase in the ventrolateral granular frontal cortex, we observed extensive anterograde and retrograde labeling of the premotor and somatosensory cortex in and around the lateral sulcus. Comparable labeling was not present with large and small control injections of the dorsal granular cortex. Cytoarchitectonic evaluation of the perisylvian cortex in the three cases examined in detail indicated that labeled areas included the ventral premotor cortex (area 6V); the precentral opercular and orbitofrontal opercular areas…

Sensory Cortical Hyperexcitability in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis Involves a Broad Hand Representation Within the Primary Somatosensory Cortex.

INTRODUCTION/AIMS: Sensory cortical hyperexcitability, reflected by enlarged median nerve somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs), has been reported in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and is associated with shorter survival. This study investigated whether similar changes involve the ulnar nerve representation within the hand area of the primary somatosensory cortex and examined their relationship with survival. METHODS: Ninety-nine patients with sporadic ALS and 42 healthy controls were retrospectively studied. Sensory nerve action potentials (SNAPs) and SEPs were recorded following media…

Laminar evoked responses in mouse somatosensory cortex suggest a special role for deep layers in cortical complexity.

It has been suggested that consciousness is closely related to the complexity of the brain. The perturbational complexity index (PCI) has be … ivity. We tested this idea by measuring global cortical dynamics and layer-specific activity in the somatosensory cortex (S1) of mice, combining cortical electrical stimulation in deep motor cortex, global electrocorticography (ECoG) and local laminar recordings from layers 1-6 in S1, during wakefulness and general anaesthesia (sevoflurane). We found that the transiti …

Modulatory effects of 5Hz rTMS over the primary somatosensory cortex in focal dystonia--an fMRI-TMS study.

Dystonia is associated with impaired somatosensory ability. The electrophysiological method of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) can be used for noninvasive stimulation of the human cortex and can alter cortical excitability and associated behavior. Among others, rTMS can alter/improve somatosensory discrimation abilities, as shown in healthy controls. We applied 5Hz-rTMS over the left primary somatosensory cortex (S1) in 5 patients with right-sided writer's dystonia and 5 controls. We studied rTMS effects on tactile discrimination accuracy and concomitant rTMS-induced change…

Neuronal activity in somatosensory cortex of monkeys using a precision grip. I. Receptive fields and discharge patterns.

Three adolescent Macaca fascicularis monkeys weighing between 3.5 and 4 kg were trained to use a precision grip to grasp a metal tab mounted on a low friction vertical track and to lift and hold it in a 12- to 25-mm position window for 1 s. The surface texture of the metal tab in contact with the fingers and the weight of the object could be varied. The activity of 386 single cells with cutaneous receptive fields contacting the metal tab were recorded in Brodmann's areas 3b, 1, 2, 5, and 7 of the somatosensory cortex. In this first of a series of papers, we describe three types of discharge pa…

Relationship between representation of hindpaw and hindpaw barrel subfield (HBS) in layer IV of rat somatosensory cortex.

We describe the organization of the hindpaw barrel subfield (HBS) in layer IV of rat somatosensory cortex (SI) and relate this organization to the representation of the hindpaw. The ovoid-shaped, HBS is oriented anterior to posterior and comprises barrels and barrel-like structures, the most prominent of which consist of at least five anteriorly-located elongated barrel bands. Posterior to these elongated bands is a cluster of four barrels. Two additional barrels are found, one lateral, the other medial. The lateral border is formed by a nearly continuous band that overlaps portions of the ant…

Time-dependent changes in the functional organization of somatosensory cerebral cortex following digit amputation in adult raccoons.

Surgical removal of the third forepaw digit in raccoons causes both long-term and short-term changes in functional organization within the digit 3 primary somatosensory (SmI) cortex. Previous studies have shown that 36-52 weeks following amputation in infant raccoons, neurons within the digit 3 cortical territory had become responsive to cutaneous stimulation of "new" forepaw regions adjoining the digit stump (Carson et al., 1981; Kelahan et al., 1980, 1981); the "novel" receptive fields (RFs) were often larger than normal and revealed no orderly somatotopic organization. In the present study,

Somatosensory and prefrontal cortex activity relates to emotional outcomes and hair cortisol concentration in chronic postsurgical pain.

Chronic post-surgical pain (CPSP) poses significant socioeconomic and humanitarian challenges. This study investigated relationships between resting-state neural activation in the somatosensory cortex (SMC) and emotional functioning outcomes (depression, anxiety, perceived stress), and between prefrontal cortex (PFC) activation and chronic stress, measured by hair cortisol concentration (HCC); and whether pain intensity moderates these relationships in females with CPSP. Twenty-nine females with CPSP reported baseline pain, completed emotional functioning questionnaires, underwent functional N…
