Acoustic and intelligibility characteristics of sentence production in neurogenic speech disorders.

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between scaled speech intelligibility and selected acoustic variables in persons with dysarthria. Control speakers and speakers with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Parkinson's disease (PD) produced sentences which were analyzed acoustically and perceptually. The acoustic variables included total utterance durations, segment durations, estimates of the acoustic vowel space, and slopes of formant transitions; the perceptual variables included scaled speech intelligibility and severity of speech involvement. Results indicated that

Hearing, language, speech, vestibular, and dentofacial disorders in fetal alcohol syndrome.

Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is characterized by congenital anomalies traditionally associated with hearing disorders. The present study sought to (a) evaluate possible central hearing loss; (b) verify and extend previous observations on sensorineural and conductive hearing losses; (c) evaluate possible vestibular disorders; (d) examine the relationships between hearing, speech, language, vestibular, and dentofacial disorders in FAS patients; and (e) evaluate the influence of patient age, race, and gender on the expression of these morbidities. A biracial group of 22 FAS patients (aged 3 to 26

Accuracy of the ABFW ‒ Screening for speech disorders in early childhood.

OBJECTIVE: To verify the accuracy of a protocol for the Brazilian population of the ABFW ‒ Adapted Child Language Test, named ABFW Triagem. METHODS: This was a diagnostic accuracy study carried out at the speech therapy outpatient clinic of one of Brazil's leading public universities. Through the database, protocols were selected for patients aged between 0 and 5 years and 11-months who visited the outpatient clinic between 2016 and 2019 with any speech and hearing complaint. A follow up was carried out in 2024 to find out whether the speech therapy hypothesis was assertive or not. RESULTS:

Parents' Emotions and Perspectives Regarding Their Children's Speech and Language Disorders.

INTRODUCTION: The social stigma experienced by parents of children with speech and language impairments is a significant concern, since it can profoundly affect the welfare and assistance provided to both the parents and their children. This study aimed to investigate the emotions and perspectives of parents regarding their children's speech and language challenges, using a survey methodology. METHODS: This is a comparative and descriptive study that includes 376 participants who have a child diagnosed with a speech and language disorder. A survey designed to assess perceived stigma was imple

The clinical and genetic spectrum of paediatric speech and language disorders.

Speech and language disorders are known to have a substantial genetic contribution. Although frequently examined as components of other conditions, research on the genetic basis of linguistic differences as separate phenotypic subgroups has been limited so far. Here, we performed an in-depth characterization of speech and language disorders in 52 143 individuals, reconstructing clinical histories using a large-scale data-mining approach of the electronic medical records from an entire large paediatric healthcare network. The reported frequency of these disorders was the highest between 2 and 5

Tongue Shape Complexity in Children With and Without Speech Sound Disorders.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the hypothesis that younger speakers and speakers with more severe speech sound disorders are more likely to use simpler (undifferentiated) tongue gestures due to difficulties with, or immaturity of, lingual motor control. METHOD: The hypothesis is tested using cross-sectional secondary data analysis of synchronous audio and high-speed ultrasound recordings from children with idiopathic speech sound disorders (n = 30, aged 5;0-12;11 [years;months]) and typically developing children (n = 29, aged 5;8-12;10), producing /a/, /t/, /ɹ/, /l/, /s/, and /ʃ/ in an inte

Cortical disorders of speech processing: Pure word deafness and auditory agnosia.

Selective disorders of auditory speech processing due to brain lesions are reviewed. Over 120 years after the first anatomic report (Dejerine and Sérieux, 1898), fewer than 80 cumulative cases of generalized auditory agnosia and pure word deafness with documented brain lesions are on record. Most patients (approximately 70%) had vascular lesions. Damage is very frequently bilateral in generalized auditory agnosia, and more frequently unilateral in pure word deafness. In unilateral cases, anatomical disconnection is not a prerequisite, and disorders may be due to functional disconnection. Regar

Service delivery and intervention intensity for phonology-based speech sound disorders.

BACKGROUND: When planning evidence-based intervention services for children with phonology-based speech sound disorders (SSD), speech and language therapists (SLTs) need to integrate research evidence regarding service delivery and intervention intensity within their clinical practice. However, relatively little is known about the optimal intensity of phonological interventions and whether SLTs' services align with the research evidence. AIMS: The aims are twofold. First, to review external evidence (i.e., empirical research evidence external to day-to-day clinical practice) regarding service

Variability in Interpreting "Educational Performance" for Children With Speech Sound Disorders.

PURPOSE: Speech sound disorders (SSDs) can have a negative impact on literacy development, social-emotional well-being, and participation across the life span. Despite this, many public schools do not provide appropriate or timely services to this population of children. In large part, this is a result of variation in how state and local agencies interpret "educational performance" as outlined within the Individuals With Disabilities Education Act. The purpose of this study was to explore which educational performance factors speech-language pathologists (SLPs) consider when determining eligib

Speech disorders in Parkinson's disease: pathophysiology, medical management and surgical approaches.

The prevalence of speech disorders among individuals with Parkinson's disease (PD) has been reported to be as high as 89%. Speech impairment in PD results from a combination of motor and nonmotor deficits. The production of speech depends upon the coordination of various motor activities: respiration, phonation, articulation, resonance and prosody. A speech disorder is defined as impairment in any of its inter-related components. Despite the high prevalence of speech disorders in PD, only 3-4% receive speech treatment. Treatment modalities include pharmacological intervention, speech therapy,

Intensive treatment of speech disorders in robin sequence: a case report.

PURPOSE: To describe the speech of a patient with Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) and severe speech disorders before and after participating in an Intensive Speech Therapy Program (ISTP). METHODS: The ISTP consisted of two daily sessions of therapy over a 36-week period, resulting in a total of 360 therapy sessions. The sessions included the phases of establishment, generalization, and maintenance. A combination of strategies, such as modified contrast therapy and speech sound perception training, were used to elicit adequate place of articulation. The ISTP addressed correction of place of produc

Using ultrasound visual biofeedback to treat persistent primary speech sound disorders.

Growing evidence suggests that speech intervention using visual biofeedback may benefit people for whom visual skills are stronger than auditory skills (for example, the hearing-impaired population), especially when the target articulation is hard to describe or see. Diagnostic ultrasound can be used to image the tongue and has recently become more compact and affordable leading to renewed interest in it as a practical, non-invasive visual biofeedback tool. In this study, we evaluate its effectiveness in treating children with persistent speech sound disorders that have been unresponsive to tr

What works: evidence-based intervention for children with speech sound disorders.

To provide alternatives to the widespread use of nonspeech oral motor exercises for childhood speech sound disorders, speech intervention approaches that have received the highest level of experimental scrutiny are reviewed. Efficacy research over the past decade is critically evaluated according to hierarchical systems for quality and credibility. High standards for adherence to experimental methods are applied and reveal strong evidence for a variety of interventions that are effective. These approaches are organized according to whether their focus is directly on speech or indirectly on spe

Evaluation of speech disorders in children with cleft lip and palate.

BACKGROUND: We investigated the reliability of nasopharyngoscopy and auditory perception, two common clinical methods employed in examining the speech pathology of children with cleft lip and palate. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Nasopharyngoscopy was performed to assess velopharyngeal closure function and nasopharyngeal morphology. The auditory examination evaluated nasality and other speech disorders such as articulatory tension, shift in articulation, and sigmatism. The study was based on the audio and video recordings of twelve patients (9.5 +/- 0.5 years) after surgical rehabilitation of their c

Pre-literacy skills of subgroups of children with speech sound disorders.

BACKGROUND: Given the importance of parenting for the child's early socio-emotional development, parenting perceptions and behaviours, and their correlates, should be assessed as early as possible in the child's life. The goals of the present study were 1) to confirm, in two parallel population-based samples, including a large sample of twins, the factor structure of a new self-administered questionnaire assessing both parents' specific parenting perceptions and behaviours toward their 5-month-old infants (i.e., parental self-efficacy, perceived parental impact, parental hostile-reactive behav

Pure-tone and speech intelligibility disturbances in patients with ototoxic disorders.

The prevalence and severity of hearing impairment caused by ototoxic drugs are surprisingly high. This emphasizes the importance of the questions arising from the treatment. In 33.7% of the cases, the hearing impairment caused by ototoxic antibiotics was of severe degree and in 25.4%, it was extremely severe. Parenteral, topical or oral administration of aminioglycoside antibiotics is dangerous. Because of the very poor speech intelligibility, most probably not only the spiral organ but the vestibulocochlear nerve and the higher auditory pathways are also affected by these antibiotics. In some
