PURPOSE: The primary aim of this research study is to assess whether differences exist in the application of the NAL-NL2 and DSL v.5 prescri … result reinforces the notion that, functionally, both methods are comparably effective in enhancing speech intelligibility in real-world, noisy environments. However, it is crucial to underscore that the absence of differences does not diminish the importance of considering individual patient needs and preferences in the selection of a prescriptive method.

The human brain networks responsible for selectively listening to a voice amid other talkers remain to be clarified. The present study aimed to investigate relationships between cortical activity and performance in a speech-in-speech task, before (Experiment I) and after training-induced improvements (Experiment II). In Experiment I, 74 participants performed a speech-in-speech task while their cortical activity was measured using a functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) device. One target talker and one masker talker were simultaneously presented at three different target-to-masker rat

OBJECTIVES: There are no approved pharmacologic therapies for chronic sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). The combination of CHIR99021+valproic acid (CV, FX-322) has been shown to regenerate mammalian cochlear hair cells ex vivo. The objectives were to characterize the cochlear pharmacokinetic profile of CV in guinea pigs, then measure FX-322 in human perilymph samples, and finally assess safety and audiometric effects of FX-322 in humans with chronic SNHL.
STUDY DESIGNS: Middle ear residence, cochlear distribution, and elimination profiles of FX-322 were assessed in guinea pigs. Human perilym

BACKGROUND: Prescriptive methods have been at the core of modern hearing aid fittings for the past several decades. Every decade or so, ther … oudness, overall loudness, and bandwidth of cochlear excitation and effective audibility as well as speech intelligibility of the international long-term average speech spectrum (ILTASS) at an average conversational input level were completed. These analyses allow for the discussion of similarities and differences among the present-day prescriptive methods.

Active middle ear implants (AMEIs) such as the Vibrant Soundbridge (VSB) offer an effective treatment option for patients with mixed or conductive hearing loss and large air-bone gaps, where conventional hearing rehabilitation often fails. However, postoperative outcomes-particularly speech intelligibility at 65 dB SPL in free-field (WRS65dB)-show high interindividual variability. This study aimed to develop a predictive model for WRS65dB based on four clinically relevant parameters: postoperative bone conduction thresholds (BCPTA4), unaided preoperative maximum speech intelligibility (WRSmax)…

Spatial separation and fundamental frequency (F0) separation are effective cues for improving the intelligibility of target speech in multi-talker scenarios. Previous studies predominantly focused on spatial configurations within the frontal hemifield, overlooking the ipsilateral side and the entire median plane, where localization confusion often occurs. This study investigated the impact of spatial and F0 separation on intelligibility under the above-mentioned underexplored spatial configurations. The speech reception thresholds were measured through three experiments for scenarios involving

PURPOSE: Cleft-related speech sound errors can negatively affect speech intelligibility in children with a cleft palate with or without a cleft lip (CP ± L), though the extent of this impact has been unclear. Understanding this relationship could facilitate intervention planning. Therefore, this study investigated the association between different types of cleft-related speech sound errors and scores on the seven items of the Intelligibility in Context Scale (ICS).
METHOD: Data from the Cleft Collective Cohort Study were used. A total of 157 children with nonsyndromic CP ± L, whose mothers ha…

PURPOSE: We explored alphabet supplementation as an augmentative and alternative communication strategy for adults with minimal literacy. Study 1's goal was to teach onset-letter selection with spoken words and assess generalization to untaught words, demonstrating the alphabetic principle. Study 2 incorporated alphabet supplementation within a naming task and then assessed effects on speech intelligibility.
METHOD: Three men with intellectual disabilities (ID) and low speech intelligibility participated. Study 1 used a multiple-probe design, across three 20-word sets, to show that our comput…

Purpose Motor neuron diseases, such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), have a devastating effect on speech muscle function that often results in severe communication deficits. Over the course of bulbar disease, tongue and jaw movements are modified, but their impact on speech is poorly understood. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of disease-related changes in tongue-jaw movement coupling on speech intelligibility in persons at different stages of bulbar ALS. Method Parallel factor analysis was used to quantify the pattern of spatial coupling between 4 semi-independent reg…

Metronome, singing, and board pacing were used as external rate control techniques for the purpose of comparing the effectiveness of auditory and visual speech timing cues for reducing speech rate and increasing intelligibility in three traumatically brain injured mixed spastic-ataxic dysarthric speakers. A single system design with baseline reversal (ABACAD) was used in this preliminary investigation. Results demonstrated statistically significant (p < 0.05) changes in increased speech intelligibility during all three pacing conditions for the two more involved subjects. Differences between t…

After Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neuropathological condition. It is a progressive degenerative disease at superannuation that affects the central nervous system (CNS) and slowly disable patients doing regular activities like walking, speaking, and writing. Early diagnosis of this disease helps to manage the patients and provide them therapy effectively. From the past few years, gait, electroencephalogram (EEG) signals and speech signals have been inspected to detect this disease at an early stage, out of which the most frequently considered one is s

In recent years, Lip-reading has emerged as a significant research challenge. The aim is to recognise speech by analysing Lip movements. The majority of Lip-reading technologies are based on cameras and wearable devices. However, these technologies have well-known occlusion and ambient lighting limitations, privacy concerns as well as wearable device discomfort for subjects and disturb their daily routines. Furthermore, in the era of coronavirus (COVID-19), where face masks are the norm, vision-based and wearable-based technologies for hearing aids are ineffective. To address the fundamental l

Due to their periodic nature, neural oscillations might represent an optimal "tool" for the processing of rhythmic stimulus input [1-3]. Indeed, the alignment of neural oscillations to a rhythmic stimulus, often termed phase entrainment, has been repeatedly demonstrated [4-7]. Phase entrainment is central to current theories of speech processing [8-10] and has been associated with successful speech comprehension [11-17]. However, typical manipulations that reduce speech intelligibility (e.g., addition of noise and time reversal [11, 12, 14, 16, 17]) could destroy critical acoustic cues for ent…
