Patients have been followed up radiologically after sagittal splitting laminoplasty (SSL) for ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) and ligamentum flavum. The enlarged spinal canal was maintained satisfactorily in all the cases, and the posterior spinal elements were also almost completely restored. In most cases, the range of the vertebral motion was good with more than 50% of the preoperative status. Postoperative instability of the vertebral column was not identified in any case. Mild cervical kyphosis was noted in 6% of cervical OPLL patients. There were no patients wi…

STUDY DESIGN: Long cassette coronal and lateral radiographs before and after surgical correction were analyzed and string test measurements made by three observers in 55 surgical cases (13 surgical types).
OBJECTIVES: The purpose of the study was to assess the effect of various corrective maneuvers for spinal deformity on the spinal canal length.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: When perioperative neurologic deficit occurs, the surgeon removes implants because they are displaced into the spinal canal or the canal has been lengthened. It is important to know the effect certain constructs have on c…

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship between spinal stenosis and cervical myelopathy. Furthermore it was to investigate whether there is a correlation between spinal stenosis and progression of neurologic symptoms?
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Using the Pavlov ratio method, we compared 14 patients with a contusio spinalis with 14 patients who suffered from a distortion of the cervical spine. This ratio is calculated by the sagittal diameter of the spinal canal with the anteroposterior width of the vertebral body.
RESULTS: In eight patients with a contusio spinalis, the…

Dynamic measurements of intraosseous pressures in lumbar vertebrae were performed to determine the effects of positional change on lumbar vertebral circulation. The data collected are applicable to the question of spinal canal stenosis. The measurements were made in 23 patients, 12 of whom had spinal canal stenosis and 11 of whom had spondylosis deformans. The pressures within the spinous processes of L3 and L5 were measured continuously while the patients were prone, lying in the lateral position, and standing. The pressures ranged from approximately 10 to 30 mm Hg in the prone position and s…

We present a 70-year-old woman with severe diabetes mellitus, who experienced low back pain and left lower leg paralysis. Computed tomography showed air in the spinal canal from C4 to S5, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed an epidural abscess from Th11 to L1. Laboratory findings showed increases in inflammatory indicators and blood culture indicated the presence of Escherichia coli. The patient was treated conservatively with antibiotics. Neurological deficits and inflammatory data improved during the course. Follow-up imaging studies showed the disappearance of gas and epidural abscess. …

OBJECTIVES: Spinal canal stenosis is often measured on anatomical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to estimate the degree of spinal cord compression. This study examined whether two quantitative measures of spinal canal stenosis taken from anatomical MRI are related to spinal cord white-matter integrity in patients with cervical spondylosis measured by diffusion tensor imaging (DTI).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: DTI and T2-weighted MRI of the cervical spinal cord were performed in 15 patients with cervical spondylosis and ten healthy control subjects of similar age. Severity of stenosis was calculat…

INTRODUCTION: The effect of spinal deformity with posttraumatic kyphosis and stenosis of the spinal canal in producing secondary changes of the spinal cord has been discussed for quite some time. Since the advent of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), 20-40% of patients with posttraumatic paraplegia are found to develop hydromyelia. PURPOSE OF OUR STUDY: To evaluate the influence of residual spinal deformity, defined by the extent of the posttraumatic kyphosis and stenosis, in the development of posttraumatic hydromyelia.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two hundred and seven cases of traumatic paraplegia…

Lumbar spinal canal stenosis primarily affects older individuals over 65 years old and is often associated with typical symptoms, such as spinal claudication. Aside from rare congenital causes, it usually develops secondarily due to age-related changes, such as disc protrusion, facet joint degeneration and ligament hypertrophy. Apart from the typical clinical symptoms, native upright X‑ray images in two planes and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are decisive. Patients without relevant neurological deficits should primarily undergo conservative treatment. In cases of pain that cannot be allevi…

OBJECTIVE: To provide a gestation age- and weight-specific mathematical formula for predicting the optimal depth of spinal needle insertion.
METHODS: The study included 127 neonates between 28 and 40 weeks of gestation and weighing 700 to 4000 grams, and a total of 202 ultrasound examinations were performed. Anterior and posterior borders were delineated using ultrasound and measured as spinal canal depth in lateral decubitus position at L3- L4 vertebral interspace. The mid-spinal canal depth (MSCD) was calculated.
RESULTS: Spinal canal dimensions showed an increasing trend with an increase …

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to develop a strategy to determine a sound methodology for decision-making in lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSCS).
METHODS: This was a retrospective study of patients with LSCS to determine the rationale for those who underwent surgery and those who received conservative treatment. All case records were assessed to extract information on the morphology grade and dural sac cross-sectional surface area (DSCA) on MRI. Patients' functionality and satisfaction were examined as outcome measures in order to understand factors that were associated with benefit fr…

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the operational method of cervical vertebral flavectomy and its clinical application in the management of cervical canal stenosis.
METHODS: From June 1997 to June 2007, 25 patients suffering from cervical spinal canal stenosis caused by obvious flaval ligament hypertrophy were given flavectomy. There were 22 males and 3 females, with an age range of 32 to 68 years (average 54 years). The course of disease was from 3 weeks to 7 years, with an average of 3 years and 7 months. All patients had degenerative cervical canal stenosis; of them, 5 cases had a history of cervi…

BACKGROUND: The study of lumbar spine pathology requires adequate preparation and knowledge of the normal structure of this part of the spine. The main goal of the study was to assess spinal canal morphology with computed tomography. The sagittal and interpedicular dimensions and surface area were considered the most important measurements. An additional goal was to assess the shape of the spinal canal and intervertebral joint angles.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Computed tomography was used to assess the lumbar spinal canals of 42 people to an accuracy of 0.01 using a special console for digital an…

There has been only one report on the physical characteristics of patients with developmental cervical spinal canal stenosis. The objective of this consecutive clinical study was to identify the physical characteristics of patients with developmental cervical spinal canal stenosis. The subjects were 243 patients with cervical spine disease who received treatment in our department between April 2001 and March 2002. These patients were divided into two groups (the groups of patients with and without spinal canal stenosis) on the basis of their lateral cervical spine radiographs. The six items ex…
