Stomatal development is regulated by signaling pathways that function in multiple cellular programs, including cell fate and cell division. However, recent studies suggest that molecular signals are affected by CO2 concentration, light intensity, and water pressure deficit, thereby modifying distribution patterns and stomatic density and likely other foliar features as well. Here, we show that in addition to lacking chloroplasts, the albino somaclonal variants of Agave angustifolia Haw present an irregular epidermal development and morphological abnormalities of the stomatal complex, affecting

BACKGROUND: Panitumumab is an anti-epithelial growth factor receptor monoclonal antibody, approved for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. Panitumumab has been more commonly associated with skin toxicity; oral adverse events have been scarcely reported in the literature. Herein, we present a case report of panitumumab-associated aphthous-like stomatitis.
METHODS: A 58 years old female visited the Oral Oncology Unit complaining of severe oral pain. The patient had been diagnosed with colon cancer metastatic to the liver and was receiving panitumumab (every 14 days) concurrently with…

Refractory recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RRAS) manifests as severe ulcerative lesions of the oral mucosa with poor healing and a poor response to conventional therapy, with or without systemic diseases. Its treatment remains a clinical challenge owing to the lack of effective therapies. Recently, biologics have emerged as promising targeted therapies for RRAS. The biologics targeting specific inflammatory pathways involved in the pathogenesis of RRAS, including tumor necrosis factor-alpha inhibitors and interleukin inhibitors, offer a more precise and promising therapeutic approach for RRAS. …

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is the most common chronic disease of the oral cavity, affecting 5-25% of the population. The underlying etiology remains unclear, and no curative treatment is available. The present review examines the existing treatments for RAS with the purpose of answering a number of questions: How should these patients be treated in the dental clinic? What topical drugs are available and when should they be used? What systemic drugs are available and when should they be used? A literature search was made of the PubMed, Cochrane and Scopus databases, limited to articles…

As it is known, many diseases of gastric system cause changes in the oral cavity, with either pathological findings or subjective impressions. When these changes are of pathological nature, the most common finding is recurrent aphthous stomatitis on the tongue, which emerges as a consequence of gastric diseases. Recurrent aphthous stomatitis is a disorder characterised by recurrent ulcerations limited to the oral mucosa, without any other signs of diseases. According to their clinical form, they may be big, small and hyperform. Etiology of recurrent aphthae is genetic predisposition, systemic …

Oral stomatitis induced by endogenous progesterone is a rare clinical condition which may be associated with cutaneous involvement. That is probably due to the peak of progesterone production during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. In the present case report, a 21-year-old patient displayed recurrent ulcerative lesions located on the buccal mucosa or the upper lip, on a monthly basis since the age of 15. Such lesions would always manifest themselves on the second day until the end of the menstrual cycle.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the immunomorphological characteristics of chronic recurrent ulcerative stomatitis. The patients were divided into 3 groups: 16 patients with mild, 15 patients with moderate, and 9 with severe stomatitis. The cytological smears were stained by Papanicolaou method. We have evaluated indexes of maturation (MI), keratinization (KI), destruction (DI), and inflammation-destruction (IDI). The immunocytochemistry was used to evaluate the local immune reactions. Anti-CD20 (pan-B marker), Anti-CD3 (pan-T marker), CD4 (marker of T helper), CD8 (marker of T cy…

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Celiac disease is a condition related to the small intestine's intolerance to gluten. In epidemiologic studies the prevalence is highly variable. The diagnosis can be difficult due to the wide spectrum of signs and symptoms. As the risk for intestinal lymphoma is higher in these patients, early diagnosis has its privileges. The higher prevalence of recurrent aphthous stomatitis in celiac disease led us to investigate the celiac disease prevalence in patients with recurrent aphthous stomatitis, which might assist in diagnosis of asymptomatic celiac disease patients. The aim of …

Patients presenting with oral mucosal disease can be challenging to diagnose and manage. There are several disorders that can present with similar clinical signs and symptoms, and knowledge of each disease will guide the clinician toward proper management. This article highlights recurrent aphthous stomatitis, a common ulcerative condition encountered in clinical practice. We review the etiology, clinical symptomatology, and topical/systemic therapies that are unique to this disorder and that will help clinicians diagnose and manage this condition.

The authors review the literature on aetiopathogenesis and therapeutic management of recurrent aphthous stomatitis. The data regarding the role of genetic, nutritional and microbiological factors in the genesis of recurrent aphthous stomatitis has been particularly examined. Despite significant associations with some antigens HLA have been reported in Southern Europe, there is no clear genetic predisposition in recurrent aphthous stomatitis. Several studies have analyzed the importance of iron, folic acid and vitamin B12 deficiencies, gluten intolerance and sensitivity to certain foods in the …

Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is characterized by necrotizing ulcers of the oral mucosa that persist, remit, and recur for variable periods of time. Despite the benign nature of the disease, persistent pain and ulceration may disable patients from performing their daily activities. We describe three patients with long-standing active RAS treated with oral colchicine. All patients experienced a marked decrease in symptoms and a remission of the disease. Recurrences, however, occurred within three days of discontinuation of the therapy. In one patient, colchicine therapy was discontinued b…

Immunocytochemical techniques using monoclonal antibodies directed against T-lymphocyte surface antigens (OKT3, OKT4, and OKT8) were used to investigate changes in the T-cell subpopulations throughout the natural time course of recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS). All lesions contained large numbers of OKT3-positive T cells. Preulcerative lesions were characterized by many OKT4-positive inducer/helper cells and few OKT8-positive suppressor/cytotoxic cells (T4:T8 approximately equal to 2:1). The ulcerative lesion contained large numbers of OKT8-positive suppressor/cytotoxic cells and only a ver…

The cytopathology and length of latency in single-step growth curves of two isolates of stomatitis papulosa virus are compared in this report. Isolate 721 was obtained from a calf with oral ulcers and isolate 8665 was obtained from a calf with respiratory disease and oral ulcers. In single-step growth curves, the latency period of isolate 721 was 8 h while that of isolate 8665 was 6 h. The cytopathic effect produced by isolate 721 in bovine lung cells was characterized by enlargement of the cell, cell-to-cell adherence and large intracytoplasmic accumulations of viral inclusion material. Isola…
