Magnesium sulphate (MgSO4) is with a proved effectiveness in cases of praeclampsia/eclampsia, but its use as a tocolytic is discussed in the last few years. That is why we had for an object to study its effect as a tocolytic in cases of abortions and premature labours. Sulfated glycosaminoglycans are known to inhibit mammalian acid-active sialidase. Although the inhibition depends clearly on the presence of sulfate groups on these macromolecules, there was no information on the intrinsic inhibitory potency of inorganic sulfate. In this study, we demonstrate that inorganic sulfates inhibit acid-active Mu-Neu5Ac sialidase of U937 cells. Irritant contact dermatitis is a complex entity with several clinical forms (acute, cumulative, etc.) and multiple mechanisms. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), the most widely utilized model for studying acute and cumulative irritation, has proved highly practical and informative for such studies. This article summarizes several decades of investigation, and provides details of dosing, application method (closed versus open), and biologic endpoints (visual grading, transepidermal water loss) that may be utilized in future studies.

A simple and reliable spectrophotometric method for the determination of heparan sulfate is described. The method is based on the 1,9-dimethylmethylene blue assay for sulfated glycosaminoglycans. Addition of bovine serum albumin, together with a specific NaCl concentration and pH, results in a specific decrease of heparan sulfate-based absorbance. We report a case of exfoliative dermatitis clearly linked to intravenous and intraperitoneal administration of tobramycin. Despite the complicated drug regimen with which the patient was treated, tobramycin was implicated by rechallenge with the drug once before its role was understood and again at an outside hospital.

Extracts of normal and keratoconus human corneas were assayed for keratan sulfate (KS) and for the protein core of corneal keratan sulfate proteoglycan (KSPG), using a solid-phase immunoassay. Aliquots from guanidine-HCl extracts of four to six pooled corneas were adsorbed to nitrocellulose membrane and assayed for binding of a monoclonal antibody against KS or of an affinity-purified rabbit polyclonal antibody against the KSPG protein core using 125I-labeled secondary antibodies. Exposures to acidic aerosol in the atmosphere are calculated from data reported in the scientific literature. The majority of date was not derived from studies necessarily designed to examine human exposures. Most of the studies were designed to investigate the characteristics of the atmosphere. Magnesium deficiency plays an important role in alcohol withdrawal syndromes. Parenteral replacement of magnesium in the form of magnesium sulfate is safe and diminishes the severity of withdrawal symptoms in recently alcohol-abstinent patients. Early diagnosis of withdrawal illness and institution of magnesium replacement therapy decrease the need for benzodiazepines, diminish withdrawal complications and reduce the length of hospital stay. Testing for serum magnesium levels is useful, but experience supports the empiric use of magnesium replacement therapy in alcohol withdrawal.

To clarify the controversy about the effect of prolactin (PRL) on dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S), this study was undertaken to investigate the effects of alterations in plasma PRL on plasma DHEA-S concentrations in hyperprolactinemic women, as well as in normal male subjects. DHEA-S was measured in a group of 21 women with hyperprolactinemia, galactorrhea, and amenorrhea (PRL:257 +/- 89 ng/ml; mean +/- SEM). In these women, mean plasma concentrations of DHEA-S (2.54 +/- 0.2 microgram/ml) were significantly higher (p < 0.005) than those in 41 normal control women (1.78 z microgram/ml)

A six month old baby with acrodermatitis enteropathica was treated successfully up to the age of 2 1/2 years with oral zinc sulphate, 100 mg daily. No complications were seen but there were two relapses. The first was at the age of 15 months when the dose of zinc sulphate was reduced to 50 mg daily and the second at 20 months when the zinc was stopped by mistake.
