[Sunburn in young people: population-based study in Southern Brazil].

OBJECTIVE: To assess the prevalence and risk factors for sunburn in young people. METHODS: Population-based cross-sectional study using a multiple-stage sampling carried out with people living in the urban area of Pelotas, Southern Brazil, between October and December 2005. Data was collected from interviews with 1.604 subjects using a standardized pre-coded questionnaire about their family and another questionnaire applied to those aged between ten and 29 years for assessing the occurrence of sunburn episodes. Sunburn was defined as skin burning after sun exposure. Chi-square test with Yates…

Sunburn prevalence among adults--United States, 1999, 2003, and 2004.

Episodic acute overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation (i.e., sunburn) is an important risk factor for two types of skin cancer: basal cell carcinoma and melanoma. Melanoma is the most lethal type of skin cancer. In 2003, a total of 45,625 new cases of melanoma were diagnosed in the United States, and 7,818 persons died from the disease. A meta-analysis of 57 studies indicated that the relative risk for melanoma among persons with sunburn history compared with those without sunburn history was 2.03 (95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.73-2.37). Monitoring sunburn prevalence with population-bas…

Delayed onset of warts over tattoo mark provoked by sunburn.

Multiple warts in a 32-year-old-man are reported that developed after tattooing and remaining exclusively confined to that area. The tattooing was done 2.5 years earlier by a professional tattoo artist. It was previously a lesion-free tattoo, but when damaged by sunburn developed multiple skin warts. The ability of a latent virus to induce warts after cutaneous ultraviolet exposure was discussed.

Sunburn, Sun Safety and Indoor Tanning Among Schoolchildren in Ireland.

Objectives: We present patterns of sunburn, sun safety behaviors and indoor tanning bed use in a nationally representative sample of schoolchildren aged 10-17. These behaviors were explored across gender, age, and social class groups. Methods: Within the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) Ireland study, 10,271 young people (aged 13.54 ± 1.92, percentage girls 53.3%) reported frequency of sun safety behaviors, sunburn, and frequency and circumstances of indoor tanning bed use. Results: Children frequently experienced sunburn (90% lifetime, 74% last year), and 3% reported never usin…

Predictors of sun protection behaviours and sunburn among Australian adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Excessive sun exposure and sunburn increase individuals' risk of skin cancer. It is especially important to prevent sunburn in childhood due to the higher relative risk of skin cancer across the life span compared to risk associated with sunburn episodes experienced later in life. This study examined demographic and attitudinal factors associated with engagement in a range of sun protection behaviours (wearing a hat, wearing protective clothing, staying in the shade, and staying indoors during the middle of the day) and the frequency of sunburn among Western Australian adolescents …

Pathways involved in sunburn cell formation: deregulation in skin cancer.

The incidence of squamous cell carcinoma of the skin is rising worldwide for decades. Chronic exposure to sunlight is the most important environmental risk factor for this type of skin cancer. This is predominantly due to the DNA damaging effect of ultraviolet-B (UVB) in sunlight. UVB induces also sunburn cells, i.e. apoptotic keratinocytes, which is a crucial protective mechanism against the carcinogenic effects of UVB irradiation. This process is regulated by a wide range of molecular determinants involved in the balance between pro- and anti-apoptotic pathways. Growing evidence suggests tha…

High-protection sunscreen formulation prevents UVB-induced sunburn cell formation.

A human sunburn cell (SBC) count is used to evaluate the reduction in UV-induced skin damage achieved by a highly protective sunscreen formulation containing 3 filters and reflective pigments (sun protection factor 34). Results indicate that, for the same minimal erythema level, SBC counts do not significantly differ between protected and unprotected skin, showing that the very high efficacy demonstrated against actinic erythema also extends to UV-induced skin damage.

A Rare Manifestation of Sunburn Rash: A Case Report of Brachioradial Pruritus.

Brachioradial pruritus (BRP) is a type of localized neuropathic dysesthesia of the dorsolateral upper extremities that is commonly found in … ated with BRP. We present a case of a 41-year-old Caucasian female who presented with complaints of sunburn to bilateral arms, pins and needles, and extreme itching sensation in the bilateral upper arms. The patient tried lotions, cortisone cream, and oral Benadryl without relief. The patient reported that the rash worsened with heat and improved with ice …

A Mendelian randomization study of genetic liability to cutaneous melanoma and sunburns.

BACKGROUND: Some studies have reported that sunburns and cutaneous melanoma (CM) risk is increasing, but a clear causal link has yet to be established. METHODS: This current study conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) approach to clarify the association and causality between sunburn history and CM using large-scale genome-wide association study data. RESULTS: The inverse-variance weighted method result showed that sunburn might be associated with the risk of CM increasing (p = 2.21 × 10-23, OR = 1.034, 95% CI= 1.027-1.041), causally. The MR-Egger regression, weighted median met…

Associations between ultraviolet radiation, tree cover and adolescent sunburns.

BACKGROUND: Sunburn is the strongest risk factor for melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancers. Adolescent sunburns are related to higher risk of developing melanoma later in life. Little is known about the association of sunburns and shade, particularly tree cover, around adolescent homes and schools. This linkage study assessed associations of adolescent self-reported sunburns with ambient ultraviolet radiation (UV) and tree cover. METHODS: We analyzed a U.S. national sample of parent-child dyads (n = 1333) from the 2014 Family Life, Activity, Sun, Health, and Eating (FLASHE) study conducted b…

A case of acquired port wine stain: an association with repeated sunburn?

BACKGROUND: Unlike congenital port wine stain (PWS), an acquired PWS is a rare vascular lesion that develops later in life. Although solar damage is associated with acquired PWS, there is no reported case of acquired PWS after sunburn in the literature. METHODS: We report a case of a 54-year-old man diagnosed with acquired PWS possibly caused by repeated sunburn. RESULTS: We recommended laser treatment to our patient; however, the patient did not chose to receive any treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Our case demonstrates a possible rare occurrence of an acquired PWS after sunburn with larger lesions…

Sunburn, sun exposure, and sun sensitivity in the Study of Nevi in Children.

PURPOSE: To examine the joint effect of sun exposure and sunburn on nevus counts (on the natural logarithm scale; log nevi) and the role of sun sensitivity. METHODS: We describe an analysis of cross-sectional data from 443 children enrolled in the prospective Study of Nevi in Children. To evaluate the joint effect, we partitioned the sum of squares because of interaction between sunburn and sun exposure into orthogonal components representing (1) monotonic increase in log nevi with increasing sun exposure (rate of increase of log nevi depends on sunburn), and (2) nonmonotonic pattern. RESULT…
