Superficial grey layer of superior colliculus integrates visual cue-evoked learning and memory in rats: importance of TRPV3 ion channels.

The superficial grey layer (SuG) of the superior colliculus (SC) receives direct visual sensory inputs from the retina and V1 cortex to drive the motor command. Processing of information in this layer is known to mainly involve glutamatergic, GABAergic and cholinergic signalling systems. In addition, the occurrence of transient receptor potential vanilloid 3 (TRPV3) cationic channels has been detected in the superficial SC, but their functional significance has not been clarified. In our previous study, we have shown that SuG may play an important role in processing visual cues encoding reward

The visuomotor transformations underlying target-directed behavior.

The visual system can process diverse stimuli and make the decision to execute appropriate behaviors, but it remains unclear where and how this transformation takes place. Innate visually evoked behaviors such as hunting, freezing, and escape are thought to be deeply conserved, and have been described in a range of species from insects to humans. We found that zebrafish larvae would respond to predator-like visual stimuli with immobility and bradycardia, both hallmarks of freezing, in a head-fixed behavioral paradigm. We then imaged the zebrafish visual system while larvae responded to differe

Transcriptomic neuron types vary topographically in function and morphology.

Neuronal phenotypic traits such as morphology, connectivity and function are dictated, to a large extent, by a specific combination of differentially expressed genes. Clusters of neurons in transcriptomic space correspond to distinct cell types and in some cases-for example, Caenorhabditis elegans neurons1 and retinal ganglion cells2-4-have been shown to share morphology and function. The zebrafish optic tectum is composed of a spatial array of neurons that transforms visual inputs into motor outputs. Although the visuotopic map is continuous, subregions of the tectum are functionally speciali

Transcriptomic changes in the posterior pallium of male zebra finches associated with social niche conformance.

Animals plastically adjust their physiological and behavioural phenotypes to conform to their social environment-social niche conformance. The degree of sexual competition is a critical part of the social environment to which animals adjust their phenotypes, but the underlying genetic mechanisms are poorly understood. We conducted a study to investigate how differences in sperm competition risk affect the gene expression profiles of the testes and two brain areas (posterior pallium and optic tectum) in breeding male zebra finches (Taeniopygia castanotis). In this pre-registered study, we inves

Neglected tracts of the brainstem: transverse peduncular tract of Gudden and taenia pontis.

OBJECTIVE: The anatomy and function of the brainstem have fascinated scientists for centuries; however, the brainstem remains one of the least studied regions of the human brain. As the authors delved into studying this structure, they observed a growing tendency to forget or neglect previously identified structures. The aim of this study was to describe two such structures: the transverse peduncular tract, also known as the Gudden tract, and the taenia pontis. The authors analyzed the potential effects of neglecting these structures during brainstem surgery and the implications for clinical p

Ten-m4 plays a unique role in the establishment of binocular visual circuits.

The patterning of binocular vision requires distinct molecular pathways for inputs arising from each side of the nervous system. Recent studies have demonstrated important roles for members of the Ten-m/Odz/teneurin family in the development of ipsilateral retinal projections. Here, we further highlight the significance of this gene family in visual development by identifying a role for Ten-m4 during the formation of the ipsilateral projection in the mouse. Ten-m4 was found to be expressed in the retina, dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN), superior colliculus (SC), and primary visual cor

Structural arrangement of auditory brainstem nuclei in the bats Phyllostomus discolor and Carollia perspicillata.

The structure of the mammalian auditory brainstem is evolutionarily highly plastic, and distinct nuclei arrange in a species-dependent manner. Such anatomical variability is present in the superior olivary complex (SOC) and the nuclei of the lateral lemniscus (LL). Due to the structure-function relationship in the auditory brainstem, the identification of individual nuclei supports the understanding of sound processing. Here, we comparatively describe the nucleus arrangement and the expression of functional markers in the auditory brainstem of the two bat species Phyllostomus discolor and Caro

Brainstem neural circuits for fixation and generation of saccadic eye movements.

We review neural connections of the superior colliculus (SC) and brainstem saccade-related neurons in relation to saccade generation mechanism. The caudal and rostral SC play a role in saccade generation and visual fixation, respectively. This functional differentiation suggests that different connections should exist between these two SC areas and their brainstem target neurons. We examined synaptic potentials evoked by stimulation of the rostral and caudal SC in inhibitory burst neurons (IBNs) and omnipause neurons (OPNs) in anesthetized cats. The caudal and rostral SC produced monosynaptic

Perturbation-driven paradoxical facilitation of visuo-spatial function: Revisiting the 'Sprague effect'.

The 'Sprague Effect' described in the seminal paper of James Sprague (Science 153:1544-1547, 1966a) is an unexpected paradoxical effect in which a second brain lesion reversed functional deficits induced by an earlier lesion. It was observed initially in the cat where severe and permanent contralateral visually guided attentional deficits generated by the ablation of large areas of the visual cortex were reversed by the subsequent removal of the superior colliculus (SC) opposite to the cortical lesion or by the splitting of the collicular commissure. Physiologically, this effect has been expla

Stimulation of the Nigrotectal Pathway at the Level of the Superior Colliculus Reduces Threat Recognition and Causes a Shift From Avoidance to Approach Behavior.

Defensive behavioral responses are essential for survival in threating situations. The superior colliculus (SC) has been implicated in the generation of defensive behaviors elicited by visual, tactile and auditory stimuli. Furthermore, substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr) neurons are known to exert a modulatory effect on midbrain tectum neural substrates. However, the functional role of this nigrotectal pathway in threating situations is still poorly understood. Using optogenetics in freely behaving mice, we activated SNr projections at the level of the SC, and assessed consequences on behav

[Evolutionary significance of reciprocal connections in the turtle tectofugal visual system].

In two turtle species--Emys orbicularis and Testudo horsfieldi--by the method of anterograde and retrograde traicing method at the light and electron microscopy level, the existence is proven of direct descending projections from the thalamic nucleus of the tectofugal visual system n. rotunds (Rot) to the optic tectum. After injection of tracers into Rot alone and into Rot with involvement of the tectothalamic tract (Trtth), occasional labeled fibers with varicosities and terminals are revealed predominantly in the deep sublayers of SGFS of the rostral optic tectum, while in the lower amount i

Brain circuits for the internal monitoring of movements.

Each movement we make activates our own sensory receptors, thus causing a problem for the brain: the spurious, movement-related sensations must be discriminated from the sensory inputs that really matter, those representing our environment. Here we consider circuits for solving this problem in the primate brain. Such circuits convey a copy of each motor command, known as a corollary discharge (CD), to brain regions that use sensory input. In the visual system, CD signals may help to produce a stable visual percept from the jumpy images resulting from our rapid eye movements. A candidate pathwa

Anesthetics change the excitation/inhibition balance that governs sensory processing in the cat superior colliculus.

The superior colliculus (SC) is a midbrain structure that plays a central role in the integration of information from different sensory modalities and the generation of orienting responses. Its normal function is thought to be governed by a strictly held balance between excitation and inhibition. This hypothesis was tested by recording from the same single units in the SC of cats before the injection of anesthetics, while anesthetics took effect, and after the injections during recovery. Sodium pentobarbital and ketamine, two agents commonly used in sensory physiology, were used. The results s

The distribution of neuropeptide Y-immunoreactive neurons and nerve fibers in the forebrain of the carp Cyprinus carpio L.

The present study reports the distribution of Neuropeptide Y (NPY)-immunoreactive neurons and fibers in the forebrain of the adult carp Cyprinus carpio L. Serial Nissl-stained sections were used for cytoarchitecture and identification of anatomical structures. Immunostaining of NPY-containing neurons and fibers was used as neurochemical marker and tool for comparison with other species, including the goldfish. The general outline of the cytoarchitecture of the carp forebrain is similar to that of other Cypriniformes. However, using NPY immunohistochemistry, we found several specific difference

Long-range competition among the neurons projecting centrifugally to the quail retina.

Birds have a well-developed centrifugal pathway from the isthmo-optic nucleus to the retina. In the present study, receptive-field properties of the isthmo-optic (IO) neurons and suppressive effect of remote stimuli far beyond the "classical" receptive fields were examined electrophysiologically in the Japanese quail. Receptive fields emitting more than half the maximal ON-OFF response to a small spot of light measured 4.3+/-1.9 deg (n = 37) in diameter. A stationary spot of light was presented at a remote point (35-76 deg) away from the receptive-field center, besides a stimulus for the recep

Retroviral misexpression of engrailed genes in the chick optic tectum perturbs the topographic targeting of retinal axons.

We have investigated the role of the homeodomain transcription factor genes En-1 and En-2, homologs of the Drosophila segment polarity gene engrailed, in regulating the development of the retinotopic map in the chick optic tectum. The En proteins are distributed in a gradient along the rostral-caudal axis of the developing tectum, with highest amounts found caudally. Previous evidence suggests that En-1 and En-2 may regulate the polarity of the rostral-caudal axis of the tectum and the subsequent topographic mapping of retinal axons. We have tested this hypothesis by using a recombinant replic

Geometry of the projection of the visual field onto the superior colliculus of the wallaby (Macropus eugenii). II. Stability of the projection after prolonged rearing with rotational squint.

At about the time of eye opening, one eye of seven tammar wallaby pouch young was surgically rotated about the optic axis by approximately 90 degrees. In adulthood the projection of the visual field through the rotated eye onto the contralateral superior colliculus was mapped electrophysiologically. Although apparently distorted, the projection could be coherently re-rotated mathematically to a reasonable copy of the normal projection from the opposite eye of the same animal, including details such as regional variations of the magnification factor. The same was true of three adult animals in

The monoclonal antibody E587 recognizes growing (new and regenerating) retinal axons in the goldfish retinotectal pathway.

E587 is a new monoclonal antibody against a 200 kDa cell-surface glycoprotein in the fish retinotectal pathway. The E587 antigen probably belongs to the class of cell adhesion molecules, and more specifically, to the family of L1-like molecules. The immunopurified protein is recognized by the antibody against the HNK1/L2 sugar epitope (associated with most cell adhesion molecules) and by a polyclonal antiserum against chick G4, which is related to the cell adhesion molecule L1 in mouse. Moreover the NH2-terminal sequence of E587 shows similarity with L1 and Ng-CAM. The E587 immunostaining patt
