Chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM) is a leading global cause of potentially preventable hearing loss in children and adults, associated with socioeconomic deprivation. There is an absence of consensus on the definition of CSOM, which complicates efforts for prevention, treatment, and monitoring. CSOM occurs when perforation of the tympanic membrane is associated with severe or persistent inflammation in the middle ear, leading to hearing loss and recurrent or persistent ear discharge (otorrhoea). Cholesteatoma, caused by the inward growth of the squamous epithelium of the tympanic membran

The goals of this study were to determine the historical, physical examination, and clinicopathologic findings in dogs with suppurative, nonseptic polyarthropathy and to identify concurrent disorders associated with this syndrome. Medical records of 52 dogs with cytologic evidence of suppurative inflammation in two or more joints were examined retrospectively. Age of dogs was 4.8 years (median, range: 0.5-12 years). There was no clear breed or sex predilection, but most were large-breed dogs (body weight > or = 20 kg [44.4 lbs] in 40/52). Body temperature was 103.0 degrees F (39.4 degrees C) (

AIM: To present a rare case of actinomycotic suppurative thyroiditis in an infant with provision of the etiology, pathogenesis, clinical findings and treatment of this rare disease.
DESIGN: A report of an 18-month-old female infant who presented with fever, erythema, induration and tenderness of the neck. The patient had the diagnosis of acute suppurative thyroiditis after a series of laboratory evaluation.
RESULT: She was treated successfully with surgical debridement and intravenous penicillin G.
CONCLUSION: Although rare, Actinomyces spp. should be considered in the etiology of acute sup

Acute suppurative thyroiditis with gas formation is very rare. A 70-year-old woman was admitted with dysphagia and fever. The clinical diagnosis of acute thyroiditis was supported by fine needle aspiration biopsy. X-ray examination showed gas collection within the soft tissue of the anterior neck and ultrasonography of the thyroid gland showed a cavity filled with thick liquid. The patient was treated with antibiotic therapy followed by thyroidectomy.

AIMS: Suppurative keratitis is a serious problem in all tropical countries, but very little information is available about the causative organisms in Africa. The objectives were to identify the causative organisms and the proportion of cases caused by fungi in southern Ghana, and to determine whether correct decisions about treatment could be made on the basis of Gram stain in the eye clinic.
METHODS: Scrapings were taken from corneal ulcers of consecutive new patients presenting at Korle Bu Hospital, Accra, and inoculated on 'chocolate' and Sabouraud's agars. Further scrapings were taken for

OBJECTIVE: To review various aspects of chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM).
DATA SOURCES: A MEDLINE search and extensive review of articles provided the information for this review.
DATA EXTRACTION: Studies describing the epidemiology, microbiology, risk factors, pathology, diagnosis, treatment, complications, and recurrence of CSOM were included.
DATA SYNTHESIS: Pseudomonas aeruginosa and anaerobes are the most predominant bacteria found in CSOM. Treatment with otic, oral, or parenteral drugs (e.g., neomycin/polymyxin B/hydrocortisone otic, ciprofloxacin, ceftazidime, or aminoglycosid

The authors discuss the results of clinical, instrumental, and microbiological examinations of 240 patients suffering from purulent cholangitis in acute cholecystitis. Choledocholithiasis was the main cause of the development of purulent cholangitis in 90.8% of patients. A classification of cholangitis and the clinical signs of the disease are dwelt upon. Endoscopic decompression of the biliary tract in the preoperative period is an obligatory condition for performing laparotomic operation. A complex of detoxification measures and general and local (prolonged flow dialysis of the biliary tract

Perineo-gluteal hidradenitis suppurativa, or Verneuil's disease, consists of infected and more or less fistulized lesions unconnected with the anal canal, dermo-epidermal nodule and diffuse subcutaneous infiltration. The disease is chronic with acute episodes and periods of stabilization and it interferes with the patient's daily life. The lesions originate in the apocrine sweat glands which are predominantly located in the inguinal, perineal and gluteal regions but may also be found in the axillary, areolar and periumbilical regions. The cause of the disease is unknown, but it has been attrib
