Adrenocorticotropic hormone-producing pituitary adenoma with pituitary apoplexy treated by surgical decompression: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Pituitary-dependent hypercortisolism (PDH) is one of the most common endocrine disorders in veterinary medicine. However, there are few reports on pituitary tumor apoplexy (PTA) in dogs and no reports on its surgical intervention in veterinary medicine. Accordingly, the appropriate treatment is unknown. Herein, a case of PDH and PTA in a dog treated surgically is described. CASE PRESENTATION: A mongrel female dog (spayed; age, 8 years and 8 months; weight, 6.1 kg) with persistently elevated alkaline phosphatase underwent adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation testing (post

Bovine pain scale: A novel tool for pain assessment in cattle undergoing surgery in the hospital setting.

Pain negatively impacts animal welfare and it is still neglected in ruminants. This original study aimed to develop and validate the Bovine Pain Scale (BPS) for acute pain assessment in hospitalized cattle undergoing surgery. This was a blinded, randomized, prospective clinical study. Thirty-six animals were included in the study. The Pain Group (n = 25) included patients admitted to a veterinary teaching hospital requiring any type of soft tissue or orthopedic surgery. Videos were recorded before, 2-6 hours after surgery, 1 hour after the administration of analgesia and 24 hours after surgery

Lower lip avulsion: Surgery and management using stem cell metabolites preparation in a domestic cat.

BACKGROUND: Lower lip avulsion is a separation between the lip and the associated soft tissue from the mandible. The degree of these types of injuries varies and heavily affects the outcome of the case. CASE DESCRIPTION: This study reported an extensive lower lip avulsion managed by surgery and stem cell metabolite preparation. A one year and nine month-old domestic cats was referred for lower lip avulsion surgery to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital Airlangga University. Owing to the limited amount of tissue, immediate successful results cannot be achieved after the first surgery. Furthermore

Excision of a gastrointestinal stromal tumour in a dog using short-wave infrared fluorescence imaging and indocyanine green.

A 7-year-old castrated male Golden Retriever weighing 36.8 kg presented to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital with vomiting, anorexia and depression. After blood tests, radiographic, ultrasound and computed tomography examinations, a 7.85 × 5.90 × 8.75 cm mass was identified in the caecum. To visualise the tumour margin and improve the accuracy of tumour resection, intraoperative short-wave infrared imaging using indocyanine green was performed during surgery. An indocyanine green solution was injected intravenously as a bolus of 5 mg/kg 24 h before surgery. Tumour resection was performed with a

Endoscopic and Surgical Removal of Gastrointestinal Foreign Bodies in Dogs: An Analysis of 72 Cases.

In emergency veterinary practice, gastrointestinal foreign body (GFB) removal is a common procedure that is performed with different techniques, such as endoscopy or surgery. The aims of this retrospective, multicentre, clinical study were to report the common locations and types of objects recovered and to investigate clinical factors and outcomes in dogs after surgical or endoscopic treatment for GFB removal. Records of dogs with a GFB diagnosis referred to the Teaching Veterinary Hospital or treated in three different veterinary hospitals from September 2017 to September 2019 were examined.

Renal Agenesis, Extramural Ectopic Ureter, and Nonfunctioning Urinary Bladder: A Difficult Clinical Case with an Innovative Approach.

Summary. A 7-month-old female Jack Russell Terrier weighing 4.6 kg was referred to a veterinary hospital for persistent urinary incontinence. Blood test results and vital signs were within the normal range. Computed tomography allowed the diagnosis of extramural ectopic ureter and unilateral renal agenesis. After the first neoureterocystostomy surgery, the dog had severe complications, such as hydroureter and hydronephrosis, so a second surgery was performed. A commercial ureteral stent was not an option, and it was decided to fabricate a homemade stent to avoid euthanasia. The stent used was

Dorsally recumbent male equine urogenital endoscopic surgery.

Possibly no other development has revolutionized general surgery more dramatically than laparoscopic surgery in human patients. The development of instrumentation suitable for use in horses has allowed the veterinary surgeon to begin to introduce minimally invasive procedures. Clearly, in people, one of the greatest benefits is reduced patient morbidity and earlier return to function. The author's experience with laparoscopic procedures in the horse would tend to reinforce those observations. The most significant obstacle to widespread acceptance of minimally invasive surgery in the horse is p

The Effect of Pet Insurance on Presurgical Euthanasia of Dogs With Gastric Dilatation-Volvulus: A Novel Approach to Quantifying Economic Euthanasia in Veterinary Emergency Medicine.

Euthanasia of companion animals in veterinary emergency medicine is a common cause of death. Euthanasia is economic when it is the consequence of the pet owner's inability to afford essential treatment while a viable medical alternative to euthanasia exists. Gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) is an acute life-threatening emergency condition of dogs; if left untreated, rapid death is highly likely. Surgical treatment leads to survival of around 80-90% of dogs; however, such treatment is costly. Therefore, pre-surgical euthanasia may be largely economically motivated. Having pet insurance, a fina

Regional anesthesia for dentistry and oral surgery.

Pain is a perception that results from activation of a specific set of receptors by noxious stimuli. Processing by the central nervous system results in the stimulus to be perceived as pain. Thermal receptors respond to temperature changes, mechanoreceptors respond to pressure, tension, stretch, and chemoreceptors respond to substances released during the inflammatory process such as prostaglandins, histamine, serotonin, and bradykinin. The current standard of veterinary medical practice is adequate pain management for all patients. Regional anesthesia is one component of overall pain manageme

Wedge osteotomy as a treatment for angular deformity of the fetlock in horses.

Five young horses with fetlock varus deformities of 8 degrees or greater were treated by means of wedge osteotomy of the distal end of the 3rd metacarpal or metatarsal bone. Three patients were admitted to the Western College of Veterinary Medicine and 2 to Colorado State University. Their selection as surgical patients was based on the following criteria: (1) an angular limb deformity of 8 degrees or greater, (2) patient older than 120 days, (3) no evidence of lameness, and (4) no evidence of degenerative joint disease. The surgery was successful in all cases.

Actinomyces as a Cause of Osteomyelitis of the Nasofrontal Suture in a Gelding.

A 7-year-old American Quarter Horse gelding was referred to the JT Vaughan Large Animal Teaching Hospital at Auburn University, College of Veterinary Medicine, for an investigation of a recurrent swelling of the nasofrontal region. Computed tomography examination of the skull was most consistent with a sequestrum of the left nasofrontal suture with associated focal osteomyelitis and left conchofrontal sinusitis. Surgery to remove the sequestrum, debride the devitalized bone, and flush the left conchofrontal sinus was performed. A microbial culture was obtained at the time of surgery, which yie

Barbiturate intoxication in two dogs confirmed by toxicological urinalysis.

Two dogs were presented within 24 hours to the Department of Small Animal Medicine and Surgery at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover for investigation of the sudden onset of neurological abnormalities following a walk in the same park. One dog was observed ingesting a piece of meat. Analysis of urine by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry from each of the dogs identified the presence of barbiturates. Both dogs recovered with supportive treatment. This is the first report to describe the use of toxicological urinalysis with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry for the diagnosis of

Uterine tear without a corresponding placental lesion in a mare.

A 3-cm full-thickness tear near the tip of the previously gravid uterine horn of a 12-year-old Thoroughbred mare was diagnosed at surgery. The mare had delivered a foal with veterinary assistance 2 days prior to surgery. The mare subsequently developed muscle tremors, anorexia, and signs of depression. Physical examination revealed pyrexia, extended capillary refill time, muscle fasciculations, and fewer-than-normal borborygmi. Abnormalities of the uterus or vagina were not detected by palpation per rectum or per vagina. The chorioallantois underlying the area of the tear was intact. We propos

Jejunal intussusception in adult horses: 11 cases (1981-1991).

Medical records of 11 adult horses with jejunal intussusception examined at 5 veterinary teaching hospitals between 1981 and 1991 were reviewed. Nine of 11 horses had signs of acute abdominal discomfort for < 24 hours, whereas 2 horses had a history of chronic signs. Five of 11 horses had an intraluminal or intramural mass associated with the jejunal intussusception. Two horses died or were euthanatized prior to surgery. Partial jejunal resection and jejunojejunal anastomosis were performed in 9 horses. One horse died during surgery and 2 were euthanatized prior to hospital discharge because o

The benefits of multidisciplinary collaboration in the successful management of two complex feline cases.

Despite a frequent misconception that behavioural concerns are diagnoses of exclusion, medical conditions and behavioural disorders are frequently inter-related. In human medicine, the 'multidisciplinary team' approach (MDTA) is considered the most efficacious way of managing patients with complex and chronic health conditions. The case series illustrates how the MDTA for complex veterinary cases improves diagnosis, treatment and management for positive long-term outcomes in feline patients' health and welfare. Feline patient 1, a 2-year-old spayed domestic shorthair cat, presented for repeate

Lack of online price transparency of small animal veterinary clinics in the United States.

INTRODUCTION: The cost of veterinary care is a significant concern for many pet owners. Despite the growing use of the internet for service-related information, there is limited research regarding the accessibility of veterinary pricing information on veterinary clinic websites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: To address this gap, the present study investigated the transparency of online veterinary service pricing on websites for small animal clinics within the United States through a cross-sectional study design. The country was divided into four divisions based on the U.S. Census, with two randomly

Machine learning analysis of factors contributing to hypotension after lumbosacral epidural anaesthesia in dogs undergoing abdominal surgery.

The incidence of hypotension after a lumbosacral epidural in dogs depends on the volume of local anaesthetic administered. So far, there are no reports comparing both methods used to calculate this volume-body weight (BW) and occipito-coccygeal length (OCL)-in veterinary medicine. In this study, we evaluated the effect of these two common dosing strategies on risk of intraoperative hypotension in dogs undergoing abdominal surgery. Data were collected retrospectively from 210 dogs in a veterinary specialist hospital, with 110 receiving OCL-based dosing and 100 receiving BW-based dosing. Compari
