Problem-Based Learning-Standardized Preoperative Conversation Improves Neurosurgery Residents' Understanding of Cerebellopontine Angle Tumors.

This study aims to explore the effects of problem-based learning (PBL) and prescription-based preoperative talk (PPT) teaching methods in the teaching of tumors in cerebellopontine angle (CPA) of clinical neurosurgery residents. One hundred-thirty neurosurgery residents working in Qilu Hospital of Shandong University from September 2021 to June 2024 were randomly divided into two groups. The experimental group adopted the combination of PBL and PPT, referred to as PPP. In contrast, the control group simply learned the material on their own. The effectiveness of the teaching methods was then ass

Faculty development for strengthening online teaching capability: a mixed-methods study of what staff want, evaluated with Kirkpatrick's model of teaching effectiveness.

BACKGROUND: Globally, tertiary teachers are increasingly being pushed and pulled into online teaching. While most developments in online education have focused on the student perspective, few studies have reported faculty development (FD) initiatives for increasing online teaching capability and confidence from a staff perspective. METHODS: We designed and evaluated FD workshops, using five datasets, and the use of H5P software for interactive online teaching. We used educational theory to design our FD (Mayer multimedia principles, active learning) and evaluated our FD initiatives using the

Quantitative evaluation of 3D-printed physiological visualization tools in enhancing interns' knowledge retention and application.

BACKGROUND: Traditional physiology teaching relies on 2D materials and static specimens, making it difficult to intuitively present complex anatomical structures and physiological mechanisms. 3D Intelligent Printing Technology (3DIPT) has demonstrated application value in surgical training, but its use in physiology education remains underexplored. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial (RCT) was conducted, enrolling 120 undergraduate nursing interns who were randomly divided into a control group (traditional teaching) and an observation group (3DIPT-assisted teaching) with a 6-month interven

Teaching children and young people intermittent self-catheterization.

The need to catheterize through the urethra can begin at any age and stage of development in a child's life and may involve different strategies for teaching. Intermittent self-catheterization, as a self-management technique, can be of benefit both physically and psychologically to children and young people. Educational strategies are available to aid health care providers in teaching children and young people self-intermittent catheterization. Use of innovative techniques and resources may assist the practitioner in teaching self-catheterization successfully to this challenging population.

Rejection of an innovation: health information management training materials in east Africa.

A shift towards decentralization in many low-income countries has meant more skills are demanded of primary health care managers, including data and information handling at all levels of the health care system. Ministries of Health are changing their central reporting health information systems to health management information systems with emphasis on managers utilizing information at the point of collection. This paper reports on a research study to investigate the introduction of new information management strategies intended to promote an informational approach to management at the operatio

Symbolic keyboard for computer aided instruction of deaf children.

We describe a computer-based method for the special education of deaf children in their stage of expanding an initial vocabulary; the method uses a symbolic keyboard to facilitate real-time communication between the deaf child and the machine. The lack of auditory feedback is partially compensated by using visual and proprioceptive sensorial modalities as alternative representations of words and concepts. To illustrate the use of the computer with display and symbolic keyboard we comment on a program for the teaching of spatial relationships. The same method is used in teaching the structure o

Approaches to teaching about mechanisms of obesity in undergraduate pathophysiology courses.

Views of obesity as a consequence of "lack of willpower" or other behavioral choices, rather than a complex array of biological and other factors, are quite common among undergraduate students. Many undergraduates in prenursing or biology programs have little exposure to the physiology and pathophysiology of obesity, including learning about leptin and other hormones involved in appetite control. I developed materials for teaching about the pathophysiology of obesity in two different pathophysiology courses: one designed as a survey of pathophysiology topics for prenursing majors, and the othe

The teaching and assessment of local anaesthesia in UK dental schools.

INTRODUCTION: Local anaesthesia (LA) is fundamental to successful dental treatment. Graduating hygienists, therapist and dentists should be confident and proficient in delivering LA. There is one previously published article reviewing LA teaching in United Kingdom (UK) dental schools in 2016, and at this time 10 out of 14 schools allowed peer-to-peer administration. The method of teaching LA administration has become an area of debate in terms of legality and morality given the potential complications and issues with valid consent. The aim of the study was to explore current teaching practices

How will the Covid-19 pandemic shape the future of primary care undergraduate teaching? Understanding modifications and developments deployed by UK academic units of primary care, and their implications for the future.

BACKGROUND: Primary care has been under-represented in its contribution to the academic literature base on Covid-19 developments. We sought … to-face teaching to remote formats (synchronous remote) and development of new, interactive on-line teaching materials (asynchronous remote). One additional theme arose inductively: collaboration and co-operation. For future implications, five themes arose: the evolution of flexible and hybrid clinical placement models; an increased role for telemedicine; increased …

POCUS - a new computer-based training approach for improving the quality of ultrasound diagnostics in gallbladder diseases.

PURPOSE: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has gained widespread adoption in medical diagnostics due to its simplicity, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness. However, insufficient training remains a significant challenge and limits its effective use. Particularly neglected is image pattern recognition and interpretation. Conventional educational methods are struggling to meet the growing demand for comprehensive POCUS training. This study aims to address this gap by introducing a novel approach using a computer-based image recognition and interpretation training (CBIRIT). MATERIALS AND METHOD
