Solutions to fire and shade: resprouting, growing tall and the origin of Eurasian temperate broadleaved forest.

Tree species of Eurasian broadleaved forest possess two divergent trait syndromes with contrasting patterns of resource allocation adapted to different selection environments: short-stature basal resprouters that divert resources to a bud bank adapted to frequent and severe disturbances such as fire and herbivory, and tall trees that delay reproduction by investing in rapid height growth to escape shading. Drawing on theory developed in savanna ecosystems, we propose a conceptual framework showing that the possession of contrasting trait syndromes is essential for the persistence of broadleave

Re-introduction of vivax malaria in a temperate area (Moscow region, Russia): a geographic investigation.

BACKGROUND: Between 1999 and 2008 Russia experienced a flare-up of transmission of vivax malaria following its massive importation with more than 500 autochthonous cases in European Russia, the Moscow region being the most affected. The outbreak waned soon after a decrease in importation in mid-2000s and strengthening the control measures. Compared with other post-eradication epidemics in Europe this one was unprecedented by its extension and duration. METHODS: The aim of this study is to identify geographical determinants of transmission. The degree of favourability of climate for vivax mala

Temperate freshwater soundscapes: A cacophony of undescribed biological sounds now threatened by anthropogenic noise.

The soundscape composition of temperate freshwater habitats is poorly understood. Our goal was to document the occurrence of biological and anthropogenic sounds in freshwater habitats over a large (46,000 km2) area along the geographic corridors of five major river systems in North America (Connecticut, Kennebec, Merrimack, Presumpscot, and Saco). The underwater soundscape was sampled in 19 lakes, 17 ponds, 20 rivers and 20 streams, brooks and creeks that were grouped into broad categories (brook/creek, pond/lake, and river). Over 7,000 sounds were measured from 2,750 minutes of recording in 1

Historic contamination alters mercury sources and cycling in temperate estuaries relative to uncontaminated sites.

Mercury (Hg) is a global and persistent pollutant which can be methylated to more toxic forms (methylmercury; MeHg) in natural systems. Both forms pose a health risk to humans and wildlife, and exposure often begins in aquatic environments. Therefore, quantifying aquatic concentrations and identifying source pathways is important for understanding biotic exposure. In this study, data from estuaries in the Northeast United States were combined to evaluate how point source contamination impacts the concentration and source dynamics of water column total and MeHg with an emphasis on sediment vers

ORF4 of the Temperate Archaeal Virus SNJ1 Governs the Lysis-Lysogeny Switch and Superinfection Immunity.

Recent environmental and metagenomic studies have considerably increased the repertoire of archaeal viruses and suggested that they play important roles in nutrient cycling in the biosphere. However, very little is known about how they regulate their life cycles and interact with their hosts. Here, we report that the life cycle of the temperate haloarchaeal virus SNJ1 is controlled by the product ORF4, a small protein belonging to the antitoxin MazE superfamily. We show that ORF4 controls the lysis-lysogeny switch of SNJ1 and mediates superinfection immunity by repression of genomic DNA replic

The Anthelmintic Ingredient Moxidectin Negatively Affects Seed Germination of Three Temperate Grassland Species.

In animal farming, anthelmintics are regularly applied to control gastrointestinal nematodes. There is plenty of evidence that also non-target organisms, such as dung beetles, are negatively affected by residues of anthelmintics in faeces of domestic ungulates. By contrast, knowledge about possible effects on wild plants is scarce. To bridge this gap of knowledge, we tested for effects of the common anthelmintic formulation Cydectin and its active ingredient moxidectin on seed germination. We conducted a feeding experiment with sheep and germination experiments in a climate chamber. Three wide

Changes of soil bacterial activities and functions after different N additions in a temperate forest.

It has been shown that different nitrogen (N) addition led to various influences on soil microbial activities in forest ecosystems; however, the changes of bacteria were still unclear. In this work, inorganic N (NH4NO3) and organic N (urea and glycine) were fertilized with different ratios (5:0, 1:4, 3:2, 2:3, and 1:4) on temperate forest soils, while fungicide (cycloheximide) was simultaneously added on half of each treatment to inhibit fungal activities (leaving only bacteria). After a 3-year field experiment, soil samples were harvested, then microbial enzymatic activities involved in carbo

The difference between temperate and tropical saltwater species' acute sensitivity to chemicals is relatively small.

Due to a lack of saltwater toxicity data in tropical regions, toxicity data generated from temperate or cold water species endemic to North America and Europe are often adopted to derive water quality guidelines (WQG) for protecting tropical saltwater species. If chemical toxicity to most saltwater organisms increases with water temperature, the use of temperate species data and associated WQG may result in under-protection to tropical species. Given the differences in species composition and environmental attributes between tropical and temperate saltwater ecosystems, there are conceivable un

Biomagnification of mercury through the benthic food webs of a temperate estuary: Masan Bay, Korea.

The authors examined food web magnification factors of total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) for the benthic organisms in Masan Bay, a semiclosed, temperate estuary located on the southeastern coast of Korea. For benthic invertebrates, concentrations of THg and MeHg (%MeHg) ranged from 9.57 to 195 and 2.56 to 111 ng/g dry weight (12.2-85.6%), respectively. Benthic fish THg and MeHg (%MeHg) concentrations ranged widely from 10.8 to 618 and 2.90 to 529 ng/g dry weight (22.9-93.9%), respectively. The linear regression slopes of log [Hg] relative to δ(15)N (i.e., food web magnification fact

Modulation of androgens in southern hemisphere temperate breeding sparrows (Zonotrichia capensis): an altitudinal comparison.

Most work investigating modulation of testosterone (T) levels in birds has focused on northern temperate and Arctic species, and to a lesser degree, tropical species. Studies exploring modulation of T in birds in temperate regions of the Southern Hemisphere are lacking. Here we explore patterns of T secretion across the breeding season in two populations of temperate Zonotrichia capensis in Chile, located only 130 km apart, but separated by 2000 m in elevation. We then compared these T profiles to those of conspecifcs in the tropics and congeners in northern zones. We measured baseline T level

Field validation, in Scotland and Iceland, of the artificial mussel for monitoring trace metals in temperate seas.

The artificial mussel (AM), a novel chemical sampling device, has been developed for monitoring dissolved trace metals in marine environments. The AM consists of Chelex-100 suspended in artificial seawater within Perspex tubing and enclosed with semi-permeable polyacrylamide gel at both ends. To validate the field performance of the AM in temperate waters, we deployed AMs alongside transplanted blue mussels Mytilus edulis in coastal environments in Scotland (Holy Loch, Loch Fyne, Loch Striven and Millport) and Iceland (Reykjavikurhöfn, Gufunes, South of thornerney, Hofsvik, Hvalfjörethur and S

Viral Lifecycle Dynamics and Spatial Structure Explain Why Accessory Genes Are Associated With Temperate Phages.

Genes encoding for virulence factors are frequently found on prophages, yet the evolutionary forces driving this association remain unclear. The evolutionary association of mobile genetic elements with host-beneficial genes is known to be hindered by the stability of chromosomal loci and competition with mobile genetic elements lacking accessory genes. Using a mathematical model that incorporates these constraints, we identify two key mechanisms that help overcome them, resulting in the evolutionary linkage of accessory genes, like virulence genes, to prophages. First, we show that migration a

Spatial Distribution and Ecological Assessment of Vegetation-Climate Zone Ecotones in the Temperate Forests of South Korea.

Ecotones are transition zones that integrate environmental gradients and play an important role in biodiversity conservation; however, within the context of South Korea, their ecological functions and spatial characteristics remain insufficiently quantified at the national scale. Scientific evidence is needed to support their inclusion in protected area planning. In this study, we quantified the spatial distribution and ecological characteristics of ecotone zones (EZs) across vegetation-climate zones in the temperate forests of South Korea and examined their associated biodiversity patterns an

Tropical vulnerability and temperate resilience: molecular and physiological insights into cold stress adaptation in oil palm.

Cold stress is a major abiotic constraint limiting the growth and productivity of oil palm (Elaeis guineensis). Its high sensitivity to chilling causes physiological impairment, metabolic disruption, and reduced oil yield and quality. This review summarizes physiological, biochemical, and molecular mechanisms of cold stress responses in oil palm, with comparative insights from rapeseed and soybean. Key pathways, including Ca2+ signaling, MAPK cascades, and the ICE-CBF/DREB network, coordinate membrane lipid remodeling, osmotic adjustment, antioxidant defense, and hormonal regulation. Key genes

Exercise-induced dehydration decreases exogenous glucose oxidation during prolonged cycling in a temperate environment.

This study investigated the effect of exercise-induced dehydration on exogenous glucose oxidation during cycling in a temperate environment. Nine trained male cyclists/triathletes (22 ± 4 yr; 75.44 ± 5.03 kg; 59 ± 6 mL/kg/min) completed two trials of 160-min cycling at 50% peak power output (Wpeak) with low [dehydrated (DEH)] or high [euhydrated (EUH)] fluid intake. Participants ingested 60 g/h glucose (20 g every 20 min as a 27% mass:mass solution, followed by 15 mL water), enriched with 0.2% [U-13C6]glucose, in both trials. In EUH, additional water (2,260 ± 477 mL) was provided. Subjective m

Heat stress drives opposing redox shifts in temperate versus tropical Drosophila melanogaster embryos.

Redox balance is central to aerobic metabolism, yet acute heat stress can destabilize this balance by increasing metabolic rates and shifting the balance of critical electron carriers such as NADH. In early Drosophila melanogaster embryos, maintaining redox balance is particularly critical as embryos undergo a developmental redox shift and rely on oxidative phosphorylation to power nuclear divisions. Here, we assayed six isofemale D. melanogaster lines from temperate (Vermont, USA; France; Japan) and tropical (St. Kitts; Ghana; India) climates to assess metabolic responses to heat in heat-sens

The effect of ambient temperature in pregnancy on the risk of gestational diabetes mellitus: evidence from temperate region.

Studies have shown that temperature is closely related to human metabolism, but only a few studies have focused on the effect of abmient temperature on gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Evidence from temperate regions is particularly lacking. Our study aimed to explore the association between ambient temperature during pregnancy and the risk of GDM, and further analyze the critical window. This study used data from the Shandong Multi-Center Healthcare Big Data Platform (SMCHBDP). Generalized additive model (GAM) and logistic regression were used to analyze the association between ambient te

Design storm estimation for flood risk assessment in the temperate Himalayan basin using hydrological modelling.

Flood frequency analysis and hydrological modelling are crucial for water resource management and flood mitigation, especially in regions vulnerable to extreme weather. This study utilises the HEC-HMS hydrological model to simulate rainfall-runoff processes and generate design storms for various return periods across 24 sub-watersheds of the Jhelum Basin, Kashmir. The model setup includes rainfall transformation using the ModClark method, baseflow estimation through the Linear Reservoir Method, and flood routing via the Muskingum approach. Satellite-based gridded rainfall data and sub-basin-sp

Unprecedented tropical cyclone in temperate-boreal ecotone drives declines in emergent conifers and canopy complexity.

Poleward shifts in tropical cyclone (TC) activity have introduced unprecedented disturbances to Northeast Asia's boreal and temperate-boreal ecotone forests. As TCs migrate northward, they increasingly influence previously unaffected regions, yet their impacts on forest structure and species composition remain poorly understood. This study examines TC Maysak (2020), the most intense cyclone recorded in the ecotone forests near the Chinese-Russian border, and its effects on tree vulnerability and canopy structure. Using high-resolution drone-based orthophotographs, we analyzed fallen tree dimen
