Silver-decorated boron nitride nanocomposite-infused cotton fabric with durable antimicrobial and multifunctional properties.

The textile industry is rapidly evolving to meet growing consumer demands for advanced, functional products. While traditional textiles have improved in mechanical strength, durability, and attributes like flame retardancy, cotton fabrics remain vulnerable to microbial degradation due to moisture retention. This study presents a novel approach that utilizes boron nitride (BN) and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) to impart antimicrobial properties to cotton fabrics. Silver-decorated BN (BN-Ag) was synthesized and functionalized with carboxyl groups, enabling strong ester bond formation with cotton…

Turpentine-induced chemical pneumonitis with broncho-pleural fistula.

Turpentine is a volatile hydrocarbon used in polishes, solvents, paints and textile industry. When hydrocarbons are aspirated into the lung, they cause chemical pneumonitis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and rarely pneumatoceles and pneumothorax. We report a 20-year old boy with turpentine-induced chemical pneumonitis that evolved into a bronchopleural fistula. He was treated with oxygen, steroids and intercostal tube drainage. This is the first reported case of turpentine-associated bronchopleural fistula.

Occupational urothelial tumours: a regional case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of occupational exposures in the risk of developing urothelial cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Occupational histories, obtained using a self-administered questionnaire, for 803 patients with urothelial cancer (first diagnosed 1991-93) were compared with similar information for 2135 matched controls. Relative risks (RRs) were estimated using conditional logistic regression. Comparisons were also made with historical regional employment information available from the 1971 census. RESULTS: There were many statistically significant positive associations for urot

Digital Printing of Nanoenabled Enzymes on Textiles: An Integrated Antimicrobial and Antibiofilm Approach.

Biofilm formation on textiles presents significant challenges in healthcare, industry, and daily use, contributing to microbial contamination, infections, and material degradation. Among biofilm-forming pathogens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa is particularly concerning due to its multidrug resistance and ability to evade conventional antibiotics, significantly increasing healthcare burden. To address this issue, we developed medical textiles digitally printed with multimodal silver-chitosan-acylase nanoparticles (AgCS@AC NPs). Fabrics endowed with antimicrobial and quorum-quenching properties inhibi

Application of Salvinia sps. in remediation of reactive mixed azo dyes and Cr (VI) - Its pathway elucidation.

The emerging industrialization has resulted in the rapid growth of textile industries across the globe. The presence of xenobiotic pollutants in textile wastewater threatens the ecosystem. Applying different microbes (bacteria, fungi & algae) has paved the way for phytoremediation - the eco-friendly, cost-effective method. The present study focuses on the phytoremediation of reactive dyes - Reactive red, Reactive Brown & Reactive Black and Cr (VI) in synthetic textile wastewater using Salvinia sps. The mixed azo dyes of each 100 mg/L showed decolourization of 75 ± 0.5% and 82 ± 0.5% of removal

Current risks of byssinosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in textile workers.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The textile manufacturing sector is a major contributor to the economies of several emergent economies in the global South. Respiratory disease, including byssinosis and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), among textile workers appears to be common in this setting. RECENT FINDINGS: Notably, little or no contemporary research has been published from countries, which are major global producers of textiles. Most recent epidemiological studies are of a cross-sectional design, with deficiencies that repeat those of research in this area over the past 20 years and do li

Use of laccase together with redox mediators to decolourize Remazol Brilliant Blue R.

A pure fungal laccase, obtained from a commercial formulation used in the textile industry, did not decolourize Remazol Brilliant Blue R (RBBR). Decolourization was only observed when a small molecular weight redox mediator was added together with the laccase. Under the conditions specified, violuric acid (5.7 mM) was the most effective mediator studied and almost complete decolourization was observed within 20 min. In contrast, 1-hydroxybenzotriazole (HOBT, 11 mM) decolourized RBBR at about a two-fold slower rate and to a lesser extent. Also, higher concentrations of HOBT were inhibitory whic…

Eco-geological consequences of textile processing wastes: Risk assessment, elemental dissolution kinetics, and health hazard potential.

Although substantial quantities of toxic wastes are generated from textile industries, the characteristics of textile processing wastes (TPWs) have yet scantily been investigated from ecological and agricultural perspectives. Here, the eco-geological consequences of TPWs are evaluated by considering three types of sludges (i.e., silk fibre sludge (SFS), dye mixed silk processing sludge (DSPS), and cotton processing wastewater sludge (CPWS)). The predominance of certain components between different wastes (e.g., fibrous substances in silk industry wastes (i.e., SFS and DSPS) and amorphous mater

Biochemical and computational characterization of a recombinant catalase from Kocuria rhizophila for degradation of hydrogen peroxide in textile wastewater.

Catalase, an industrially important enzyme, catalyzes the hydrolysis of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen, playing a crucial role in various industries, including wastewater treatment in the textile sector. This study aimed to clone and express the catalase gene from Kocuria rhizophila ATCC 9341 into Escherichia coli BL21 (DE3), then characterize the purified enzyme and evaluate its potential for hydrogen peroxide degradation in textile wastewater. The 1524 bp gene was amplified and ligated into pET-21a( +) using the T4 DNA ligase enzyme. The expression of the recombinant catalase gene i
