East Coast fever (ECF), one of the most serious tick-borne diseases in sub-Saharan and eastern Africa, was introduced to the island of Grande Comore in 2002 through zebu import from Tanzania, resulting in at least a 10% loss of livestock. A participatory epidemiology initiative was launched in 2015 to gain a better understanding of ECF epidemiology. Thirty-six villages were investigated involving 36 focus group sessions and 120 individual questionnaires. Farmers' knowledge of ECF and of priority diseases affecting the country was assessed, and the impacts of ECF and other major diseases were c

We evaluated the distribution of piroplasmids in equids from the Mato Grosso state in Midwestern Brazil using molecular methods and the interspecific genetic diversity. For this, 1,624 blood samples of equids from 973 farms were examined by PCR, using primer pairs that amplify a fragment of the genes rap-1 and ema-1 of Babesia caballi and Theileria equi, respectively. For molecular characterization and phylogenetic studies, 13 and 60 sequences of the rap-1 and ema-1 genes, respectively, were used to build a dendogram using maximum parsimony. B. caballi and T. equi were detected in 4.11% and 28

BACKGROUND: In 2012-2013, an investigation was carried out in the Viterbo province, Lazio region, on ticks and tick-borne Apicomplexan protozoa of the Babesia and Theileria genera. This followed the reporting of high density of ticks by soldiers operating in a military shooting range, and the signaling by owners and local veterinary authorities of several cases of babesiosis among cattle.
METHODS: A total of 422 ticks were collected from 35 heads, whereas 96 ticks were collected by dragging. Ticks were identified as Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus Say (n = 373), Rhipicephalus bursa Canest

A cross-sectional study based on clinical examination, inspection of herd health records and a questionnaire was designed to determine the epidemiology, economics and potential impact of immunisation against theileriosis in Tanzania. The results showed annual theileriosis costs to be US$ 205.40 per head, whereas the introduction of immunisation reduced this by 40-68% depending on the post immunisation dipping strategy adopted. Morbidity risk due to theileriosis was 0.048 in immunised and 0.235 in non-immunised cattle, and the difference was significant (chi(2)=66.7; P=0.000). The questionnaire

Five different East Coast fever (ECF)-control strategies (involving ECF immunisation by the infection-and-treatment method) were tested in groups of traditionally managed Sanga cattle in the Central Province of Zambia over a period of 2.5 years. Two groups were under intensive tick control (weekly spraying with acaricide)--one group immunised and the other non-immunised. Two groups were under no tick control--one group immunised and the other non-immunised. The fifth group was under seasonal tick control (18 sprays/year) and was immunised against ECF. The input and output data were used to con

Fatal (Panthera tigris) cytauxzoonosis was diagnosed in a 7-year-old female white tiger. The tiger presented with a 2-day history of anorexia and lethargy. She was mildly dehydrated, with a temperature of 105.2 F and a hematocrit of 26%. Over the next day, icterus developed, and her physical condition progressed to recumbency, coma, and death. Hematologic findings obtained shortly before death included icteric plasma, severe thrombocytopenia, mild anemia, hematuria, and parasites consistent with Cytauxzoon felis in circulating erythrocytes. Gross necropsy findings included generalized icterus,

Fluid balance is a major physiological problem for hematophagous ticks. To maintain osmotic balance they must conserve water for prolonged periods while seeking a mammalian host, and they must eliminate a very large volume of excess fluid taken in during a relatively short period of feeding. This is accomplished in part by modification of the salivary gland during 7-10 days of feeding to secrete a copious saliva which is pumped into the bovine host. This function has previously been attributed to certain interstitial epithelial cells of the type III acinus which differentiate in the course of

Digital microscopy is increasingly used in veterinary diagnostic pathology. However, limited independent research has been published on its use, especially for the purpose of evaluating blood films. Hence, determining the potential limits of blood film assessments obtained via digital microscopy is needed. We compared the agreement of digital and optical cytology for the detection of common cellular morphology changes and abnormalities in veterinary blood films. Twenty-two veterinary clinical pathologists and residents evaluated canine, feline, and equine blood films on glass slides via optica

Theileriosis caused by Theileria parva infections is responsible for high cattle mortalities in Zambia. Although infected buffalo are a risk to cattle, the characterization of T. parva parasites occurring in this host in Zambia has not been reported. Furthermore, considering the advances in the development of a p67 subunit vaccine, the knowledge of p67 genetic and antigenic diversity in both cattle and buffalo associated T. parva is crucial. Therefore, blood samples from buffalo (n=43) from Central, Eastern and Southern provinces, and cattle (n=834) from Central, Copperbelt, Eastern, Lusaka, a

Ticks are economically important obligatory blood feeding arthropods that have a pivotal role in transmission of infection. The present study was conducted in ixodid ticks collected from four districts of coastal Odisha, India to investigate the prevalence of Theileria annulata. Adult semi engorged Hyalomma anatolicum ticks (n = 178) were dissected, the salivary gland was isolated and DNA was extracted. A nested PCR targeting the Tams1 gene of T. annulata, utilizing two sets of primers (N516F, N517R, and Ta14136iF, Ta249R) was utilized for detection of the parasite. The PCR products were then

BACKGROUND: Theileria orientalis is a tick-borne hemoparasite that causes anemia, ill thrift, and death in cattle globally. The Ikeda strain of T. orientalis is more virulent than other strains, leading to severe clinical signs and death of up to 5% of affected animals. Within the Asia-Pacific region, where it affects 25% of Australian cattle, T. orientalis Ikeda has a significant economic impact on the cattle industry. In 2017, T. orientalis Ikeda was detected in a cattle herd in Albermarle County, Virginia, United States. Months earlier, the U.S. was alerted to the invasion of the Asian long

INTRODUCTION: Theileria equi, an etiologic agent of equine piroplasmosis, is a tick-transmitted hemoprotozoan of the phylum Apicomplexa. Recent outbreaks of piroplasmosis in the United States have renewed interest in safe and effective treatment options. Although imidocarb dipropionate (IMD) is the drug of choice for clearance of T. equi, adverse reactions and recently documented resistance support the need for alternative therapeutic strategies. The recently described bumped kinase inhibitors (BKIs) are a new class of compounds that could potentially be used as safe and effective alternatives
