Vascular calcification is common among hemodialysis (HD) patients and contributes to the development of peripheral arterial disease. A 57-year-old Japanese man who had been on HD for 30 years was referred to us for severe pain with multiple ulcers on his toes and fingers. He was an ex-smoker and had no diabetes mellitus. On admission, he had ulcers on his big toes bilaterally and right 2nd - 4th fingers. Peripheral pulses were strong and his ankle-brachial pressure index was above 1.3. Herein, we studied the acidity and nucleophilicity of several low molecular weight persulfides using the alkylating agent, monobromobimane. PURPOSE: Hearing loss occurs in 50%-70% of children treated with cisplatin. Scientific efforts have led to the recent approval of a pediatric formula of intravenous sodium thiosulfate (STS) for otoprotection by the US Food and Drug Administration, the European Medicines Agency, and the Medicines and Health Regulatory Authority in the United Kingdom. We recently reported in a rat model of kidney transplantation that the addition of sodium thiosulfate (STS) to organ preservation solution improved renal graft quality and prolonged recipient survival. The present study investigates whether STS pre-treatment would produce a similar effect. Sodium thiosulfate was used as the sulfur source that reacts with anhydrides to generate acyl-Bunte salts, after which a reaction with phenols was induced. This protocol can be applied for the site-selective acylation of the phenolic hydroxyl group in the presence of other alcoholic groups. Biodesulfurization processes remove toxic and corrosive hydrogen sulfide from gas streams (e.g., natural gas, biogas, or syngas). BACKGROUND: This study aims to evaluate the ability of sodium thiosulfate (STS) to neutralize the adverse effect of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) on dentin micro-hardness.
METHODS: Fifty single-rooted teeth were longitudinally sectioned. The samples divided into a control and four sample groups (n = 20). Penile gangrene is a rare but fatal complication of calciphylaxis in end-stage renal disease (ESRD). To date, there are no guidelines on its management, and outcomes are generally poor with high mortality rate. We present a case of a diabetic patient with ESRD presenting with dry gangrene of the glans penis due to calciphylaxis and successfully treated with intravenous sodium thiosulfate (STS) and early total parathyroidectomy. We further analysed existing literatures on cases that utilized STS in the treatment of penile calciphylaxis.
