Thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) are a group of rare thoracic malignancies, including thymic carcinomas (TC) and thymomas (Tm). Autoimmune paraneoplastic diseases are often observed in TETs, especially Tms. To date, chemotherapy is still the standard treatment for advanced disease. Unfortunately, few therapeutic options are available for relapsed/refractory TETs. In the last few years, the deepening of knowledge on thymus' immunobiology and involved altered genetic pathways have laid the foundation for new treatment options in these rare neoplasms. Recently, the immunotherapy revolution has lan

Human T (thymus-derived)-cell leukemia/lymphoma virus (HTLV) is the first retrovirus consistently isolated from humans. Seroepidemiologic testing for antibodies to HTLV document the following. (1) HTLV is associated with a spectrum of mature T-cell lymphoreticular neoplasms. (2) HTLV is strongly associated with clusters of adult T-cell leukemia in Japan and a related syndrome, lymphosarcoma T-cell leukemia in the Caribbean. (3) Virus-positive infections from other areas of the world share similar clinicopathologic features, with some overlap with cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (CTCL). Antibodies to

Thymomas are derived from the epithelial component of the thymus and constitute the most common tumor of the anterior mediastinum. These neoplasms are considered malignant for their potential for invasion and metastases. Several histopathologic subclassification schemes have been proposed over the years, however, correlation of histotypes with prognosis remains controversial. In contrast, studies invariably have shown that staging and resection status correlate with oncologic behavior and disease outcomes. In this regard, several staging systems have been presented, though transcapsular invasi

Cutaneous small vessel vasculitis is a severe neutrophilic vascular inflammation mediated by immune complexes that involves the dermal postcapillary venules. Neoplasms represent 2-5% of all causes of secondary cutaneous vasculitis. We present a case of a 52-year-old man who was admitted due to a 10-day history of respiratory symptoms and myalgia. From the third day of symptoms onwards, the patient noticed the appearance of cutaneous lesions in the lower limbs with palpable purpura and erythematous papules. Additionally, he reported of asthenia, anorexia and weight loss during the prior month.

Mucoepidermoid carcinomas (MECs) of lung are rare neoplasms originating in bronchial submucosal glands and comprising 0.1-0.2% of primary lung cancers. MECs, the most common malignancy in salivary glands, were earlier thought to occur only in salivary glands. Later studies showed that they can arise as a primary in bronchus, esophagus, lacrimal glands, pancreas, thymus and thyroid gland. Initially described as a benign adenoma, it is now considered to be a malignant epithelial tumor. There have been reports of metastases to regional lymph nodes, other parts of the lung and distant organs. Cavi

Thymomas, tumors that arise from epithelial cells of the thymus gland, are the most common neoplasms of the anterior mediastinum, with an incidence rate of approximately 2.5 per million/year. Cytotoxic T Lymphocyte Antigen 4 (CTLA-4 or CD152) exerts inhibitory activity on T cells, and since its oncogenic role in the progression of different types of tumors, it has emerged as a potential therapeutic target in cancer patients. In this study, we assessed the expression of CTLA-4 both at mRNA and protein levels in paraffin embedded-tissues from patients with thymomas. Furthermore, we evaluated the

Here, we report an extremely rare case of carcinoma with thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) of the parotid gland. CASTLE is a rare malignant epithelial tumor with thymic epithelial differentiation that arises in the thyroid gland or perithyroidal soft tissue. CASTLE of salivary gland origin is rare, with only nine published case reports to date (reported as "CASTLE" or "thymic carcinoma"). It is critical to diagnose salivary gland tumors using fine needle aspiration cytology. However, this tumor is rare, and there have been few studies on its cytomorphological features. Therefore, it is impo

Thymic epithelial neoplasms, as classified by the World Health Organization, include thymoma, thymic carcinoma, and thymic carcinoid. They are a rare group of tumors and are often diagnosed incidentally in the work-up of parathymic syndrome, such as myasthenia gravis, or when mass effect or local invasion causes other symptoms. In each of these scenarios, understanding the radiologic-pathologic relationship of these tumors allows clinical imagers to contribute meaningfully to management decisions and overall patient care. Integrating important imaging features, such as local invasion, and path

Associations between Epstein-Barr virus and undifferentiated carcinomas of nasopharynx, parotid gland, and thymus have recently been reported. Epstein-Barr virus has also been associated with malignant lymphoma of the nose and paranasal sinuses. These findings raise the possibility that Epstein-Barr virus may additionally be linked to undifferentiated carcinoma of the nose and paranasal sinuses (SNUC), an uncommon but distinctive and highly aggressive neoplasm. Histologically, SNUC consists of small and medium cells, the precise characterization of which often requires immunocytochemical analy

AIMS: In thymic carcinomas, focal clear cell change is a frequent finding. In addition to a prominent, diffuse clear cell morphology, some of these carcinomas show an exuberant hyalinised extracellular matrix, and therefore probably represent a separate entity. However, a characteristic genomic alteration remains elusive. We hypothesised that, analogous to hyalinising clear cell carcinomas of the salivary gland, hyalinising clear cell carcinomas of the thymus might also harbour EWSR1 translocations.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We identified nine archived cases of thymic carcinoma with focal clear ce

In our study we described the immunophenotypic characteristics of an ectopic thymus found in an eight month old male baby. Comparing with the results of normal thymic cells we did not found any difference or abnormalities in the phenotype. A brief discussion of theories of histogenesis and possible differential diagnosis of ectopic thymus is included. The most common immune pattern of both, ectopic and normal thymuses, was expression of TdT,CD7,cCD3,CD1 and dual CD4/CD8. Early results of immunological examination confirmed by histopathology stated the diagnosis of ectopic thymus and excluded o

Thymosin fraction-5 (TF5), an array of small molecular weight peptides present in crude extracts of the adult bovine thymus, contains numerous constituents with demonstrable biological activity. Because TF5 generally enhances immune reactivity in a variety of settings, and additionally restricts proliferation of certain neoplasms, we examined the effects of TF5 on proliferative capacity in the human promyelocytic leukemia cell line HL-60. Vital dye-exclusion, oxidative metabolism of chromogenic dyes, and clonogenic growth profiles were monitored to assess rates of cellular proliferation; our r

In myasthenia gravis (MG), the frequency of histologic abnormalities (hyperplasia in young patients, thymoma in older cases) and clinical improvement after thymectomy indicate involvement of the thymus in the pathophysiology of the disease. MG patient thymuses are characterized by the following features: increased amount of B cells (in hyperplasia) and functional abnormalities, mainly activation of B, T and epithelial cells. Moreover, thymic lymphocytes are sensitized to acetylcholine receptor (AChR): first, AChR specific T and B lines can be grown from MG thymus cultures, second, cultured thy

Masses of the mediastinum develop from anatomic structures that pass through or are normally located within this space; they may also occur secondary to metastatic spread from malignancies from other locations. The anterior compartment of the mediastinum can give rise to thymomas, which tend to be restricted to the thymus as well as nearby structures. Their symptoms are associated with their size and impact on nearby structures. This patient, a 22-year-old male with no medical history, presented to the emergency department for evaluation of a cough ongoing for 3 weeks. Chest X-ray and computed

Thymoma is an epithelial neoplasm of the thymus. It commonly lies in the anterior mediastinum and represents 20-30% of mediastinal tumours in adults. In this report we present a case of giant thymoma locating in the anterior-inferior mediastinum. A 46-year-old male came to our institute with slight pectoralgia and dyspnea. Chest CT shows a giant tumor measuring 19 cm × 16 cm × 15 cm in the left thoracic cavity. After careful examination, we performed surgery. At surgery, we found the tumor was adherent to left upper lobe of the lung, mediastinal pleura, and parietal pleural. The tumor was comp

Thymic Epithelial Tumors (TETs) arise from epithelial cells of the thymus and are very rare neoplasms comprising Thymoma, Thymic carcinoma, and Thymic Neuroendocrine tumors that still require in-depth molecular characterization. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are emerging as relevant gene expression modulators involved in the deregulation of several networks in almost all types of human cancer, including TETs. LncRNAs act at different control levels in the regulation of gene expression, from transcription to translation, and modulate several pathways relevant to cell fate determination under n
