Autoimmune thyroiditis was induced in two vervet monkeys by immunizing them with human thyroid extract. As expected, both animals developed cytotoxic antibodies which were active against human thyroid and other human cells in tissue culture. In addition, a second serum factor was detected. This was capable of sensitizing human thyroid (and other) cells and rendering them susceptible to killing by normal lymphocytes. This finding implicates antibody-dependent cell-mediated cytotoxicity in the pathogenesis of autoimmune thyroiditis.

The inbred BUF rat develops autoimmune thyroiditis spontaneously. The incidence is related to the age of the animal and is increased by neonatal thymectomy and by treatment with methylcholanthrene. Autoantibodies to thyroglobulin can be demonstrated by indirect immunofluorescence and hemagglutination, but skin tests are negative. The "spontaneous" autoimmune disease may be due to the conjunction of an unusually vigorous immunological response to thyroglobulin and the loss of thymic suppressor function.

The spontaneous occurrence of, and recovery from primary hypothyroidism were observed after delivery in 6 women with autoimmune thyroiditis. Diffuse goiter was noticed 1-3 months after delivery. The blood thyroid hormone level was found to be lowest at 3-6 months post-partum, with a thyroxine iodine value of 1.0 +/- 0.6 mug/dl (mean +/- SD) (normal 3.0-7.2), triiodithyronine value of 77 +/- 11 ng/dl (normal 90-190) and T3 resin sponge uptake of 21 +/- 2.8% (normal 24-37). During this period the serum level of thyrotropin was increased to 307 +/- 235 muU/ml (normal less than 8) and 131I thyroid

Several immunologic procedures are described, by which the postthymectomy autoimmune thyroiditis in (C3H/HeMs X 129/J)F1 female mice was clearly prevented. These include the grafting of a neonatal thymus or a cell injection from adult thymus, spleen, and lymph nodes, but not from bone marrow. Their preventive effects, however, depended on the timing of treatments. In general, the earlier the treatment was given, the better the effect was. Thymus cells from 7-day-old mice were effective, whereas spleen cells from the same donors and neonatal thymus cells were ineffective. Neonatal thymectomy or

This review of human autoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) focuses mainly on the epidemiology and pathophysiology of this very common disorder, although some specific clinical situations are discussed. One peculiarity of AITD is the existence of two contrasting phenotypes: hypothyroid thyroiditis and hyperthyroid Graves' disease. Graves' disease is characterized by the presence of anti-TSH receptor antibodies capable of activating the TSH receptor, leading to thyroid hypertrophy and hyperfunction. In contrast, autoimmune thyroiditis progresses slowly, through necrosis/apoptosis of thyroid cells an

This overview of the thyroid autoimmunity in human presents the various facets of a very common pathology. Focus is rather on fundamental than clinical aspects, although some specific clinical situations are discussed. Epidemiology, pathophysiology and pathology of AITD are detailed. One of the peculiarities of AITD is that they express two opposed phenotypes, hypothyroid thyroiditis and hyperthyroid Graves' disease. The latter is characterised by the presence of a unique type of autoantibodies, the anti-TSH receptor antibodies. Those are capable to activate the TSH receptor leading to the gla

Autoimmune thyroid diseases (AITDs), predominately Graves׳ disease and Hashimoto׳s thyroiditis, comprise the most common autoimmune diseases in humans. Both have the production of anti-thyroid antibody as an important aspect and both are much more prevalent in females, being at least 10 times more common than in males. Using these two clues, a hypothesis for the initiation of thyroid autoimmunity is proposed that helps to make the case that the thyroid is one of the most sensitive sites for autoimmunity and helps account for the prevalence and the observed sex differences in AITDs and associat

Autoimmune thyroid diseases (Hashimoto thyroiditis, Graves' disease, postpartum thyroiditis, atrophic thyroiditis and drug induced thyroiditis) are prevalent disorders worldwide, especially in women (related to the millieu of sex steroids and X chromosome effects on the thyroid and the immune system). Disruption of thyroid self tolerance, usually induced by an infection, generates abnormal thyroid--immune interactions, implicating an array of cytokines and their receptors. Thyrocytes achieve antigen presenting cell properties which stimulate effector immune cells (Th1, Th2, Th17), in the conte

BACKGROUND: The autoimmune regulator gene (AIRE), located on chromosome 21, plays a central role in the elimination of autoreactive T lymphocytes through negative selection in the thymus. In Down syndrome (DS), or trisomy 21, AIRE overexpression may occur, which has been associated with a higher prevalence of autoimmune diseases, such as autoimmune thyroiditis.
OBJECTIVE: To analyze the genetic variants of the AIRE gene associated with autoimmunity in individuals with DS, as well as the epigenetic and environmental mechanisms that may modulate its expression and/or function.

OBJECTIVE: Autoimmune thyroiditis (AIT) patients frequently present with coexisting autoimmune diseases (ADs), adding complexity to management and outcomes. Although this field has been extensively explored, there is a paucity of bibliometric analyses capable of clarifying worldwide research trajectories, identifying major hotspots, and outlining prospective directions.
METHODS: This study extracted data from PubMed, Web of Science Core Collection, and Scopus, analyzing 2,201 publications published between 1980 and 2024. Data visualization was performed using VOSviewer, CiteSpace, and the bib

The current century has been declared by the WHO as the «century of autoimmune diseases», of which there are more than a hundred today. The natural course of any autoimmune disease is characterized by progression from a latent and subclinical to a clinical stage and is associated with the presence of specific circulating autoantibodies. During the life of a person with one verified autoimmune disease, there is a high probability of consecutive manifestation of other autoimmune pathologies. Every fourth patient with chronic autoimmune thyroiditis develops autoimmune non-thyroid pathologies duri

Atrophic autoimmune thyroiditis (AAT) is a type of autoimmune thyroiditis that causes hypothyroidism without thyroid enlargement. AAT is distinguished from Hashimoto's disease (HD) by the absence of thyroid enlargement. AAT is rare in children and clinically characterised by severe primary hypothyroidism. Autoimmune thyroiditis, especially HD, is commonly complicated with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Here, we reported the patient with AAT as the initial presentation of SLE complicated with generalised myxoedema, whose presentation was a diagnostic challenge. This patient illustrates the
