Sera from four Australian elapids and one boidid (python) were tested for their ability to protect neonatal mice against the toxic action of tiger snake (Notechis scutatus) venom. Of the five serum samples tested, only serum from Pseudechis australis and Pseudechis porphyriacus were capable of neutralizing the tiger snake venom. In addition, neutralization was shown to be highly variable within serum taken from individual snakes of the same species (P. porphyriacus). Previously, only viperid and colubrid snakes have been shown to possess neutralizing factors against snake venoms.

The aim of the present study was to detect the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection and associated risk factors among Siberian tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) and giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) in China. A 68-year-old patient presented with weakness, recurrent falls, unintentional weight loss, and confusion. Symptomatic hypercalcemia secondary to a Vitamin D intoxication was initially identified as cause. Over time, proximal myopathy, edema of the forearms, persistent hypercalcemia with elevated 1,25 Vitamin D and increased inflammatory markers developed. A PET-CT showed disseminated linear uptake in the skeletal muscles («tiger man sign»). After muscular biopsy the suspicion of muscular sarcoidosis was confirmed. High-dose steroid therapy resulted in rapid clinical improvement.

BACKGROUND: Probiotics, live cells with different beneficial characteristics, have been extensively studied and explored commercially in many different products in the world. Their benefits to human and animal health have been proven in hundreds of scientific studies. Based on their beneficial effects, the marine shrimp Penaeus monodon was used as a potential source of probiotic bacterial strain isolation.

A 1.5 kg, male, wild-caught tiger rat snake (Spilotes pullatus) presented with an externally visible distension of the body wall at the level of the heart.
