The aim of the study was a microbiological analysis of pharyngeal swabs obtained from 158 patients with the diagnosis of pharyngitis and purulent exudates from the tonsillar crypts of 10 patients treated for chronic purulent tonsillitis. Bacteriologic samples from 31 young men were cultured quantitatively for aerobes and anaerobes; these samples included 31 specimens of tonsils (16 infected and 15 healthy), 16 specimens from pericoronal pockets of lower third molars (11 infected and 5 symptom-free), and 6 postoperative specimens from lower-third-molar extraction sockets. Streptococcal infection is a rarely recognized cause of nonrheumatic perimyocarditis. We report a case of a young patient who developed acute perimyocarditis as manifested by diffuse electrocardiogram changes, and markedly elevated cardiac enzymes, concurrently with streptococcal tonsillitis. Despite the dramatic presentation, the patient recovered uneventfully. We conclude that streptococci can involve the heart also directly by a bacterial component or toxin, and not only through a delayed immunologic mechanism as in rheumatic fever. One hundred cases aged 4-20 years and suffering from chronic tonsillitis were examined for Toxoplasma antibodies using indirect immunofluorescent test (IFAT). It was found that 37% of them were positive for toxoplasmosis. 41.5% of hypertrophic cases and 32% of atrophic ones had toxoplasmosis but the difference was statistically insignificant. The mean antibody titres were higher in both atrophic and hypertrophic cases than in the control group. Two young men with streptococcal tonsillitis had acute myopericarditis mimicking myocardial infarction. Subsequently, 264 consecutive army conscripts hospitalized with a fever and sore throat underwent throat cultures. Group A streptococci were found in 84 patients. When these patients were systematically screened by serial electrocardiography for myocarditis, one case of probable asymptomatic myocarditis was diagnosed. None had signs of acute rheumatic fever. All three patients received penicillin therapy when the signs of myocarditis appeared. Their recovery was good.

A 38 year old woman presented with severe weakness, high fever, and sore throat. Physical examination showed follicular tonsillitis and bradycardia caused by a atrioventricular block. Within 24 hours a normal sinus rhythm was regained but slight transient ST-T changes compatible with myocarditis were evident. Throat culture grew Streptococcus haemolyticus group A.

A prospective 1-year study of acute febrile exudative tonsillitis in 110 children was carried out. Viral infection was associated with 42% of the cases, beta-hemolytic streptococci with 31% (12% group A), Mycoplasma pneumoniae with 5%, and unknown cause with 35%.
