Root and root canal morphology in maxillary second molar with fused root from a native Chinese population.

INTRODUCTION: Root fusion is an anatomic variation in maxillary second molars (MSMs); however, the nature of this canal morphology as it relates to its root anatomy has not been fully clarified. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between features of fused roots and root canal anatomy in MSMs using micro-computed tomographic imaging. METHODS: One hundred eighty-seven extracted MSMs were scanned with the μCT50 (Scanco Medical, Bassersdorf, Switzerland), and their root and canal morphology was classified and analyzed using the classifications proposed by Yang and Vertu

Root Fracture as Complication of Surgically Assisted Rapid Maxillary Expansion.

A 23 year old male patient was submitted to surgical assisted rapid maxillary expansion (SARME). There were any postoperative complications until the finish of orthodontic expansion process. However, in the 30th postoperative day, patient mentioned pain in upper central incisor. Periapical radiography evidenced a root fracture of central upper right incisor. After endodontic treatment, the fractured apex was removed. After 3 years of follow-up, the patient finished orthodontics, and the damaged tooth was in good aspect. Apical fracture is an unexpected complication of SARME. However, follow-up

Buccal and coronal bone augmentation using forced eruption and buccal root torque: a case report.

The following case report describes the buccal and coronal bone augmentation around an irretrievable tooth using forced eruption and buccal root torque for immediate nonsubmerged implant placement. A mandibular left second premolar with degree 2 mobility, severe buccal bone resorption, and interproximal angular bony defects was subjected to forced eruption and buccal root torque. Five months after this process, the tooth was displaced 15 mm coronally and the root apex faced buccally. Buccal and coronal bone augmentation and soft tissue enlargement were evident at reentry surgery. This techniqu

Relationship of maxillary posterior roots to the maxillary sinus and cortical bone: a cone beam computed tomographic study.

This study evaluated the relationship between the apices of maxillary posterior teeth (second premolar, first molar, and second molar) and the maxillary sinus floor (MSF) and maxillary cortical bone (MCB). Cone beam computed tomographic (CBCT) scanning was used to analyze 1660 roots from 678 teeth and determine the shortest distance between the root apex and MSF and between the root apex and buccal and palatal cortices of maxillary bone. The root apices were classified based on their relationship to the MSF: type 1, the root apex protruded into the maxillary sinus; type 2, the root apex was fr

Under your nose: a rare finding during dissection provides insights into maxillary supernumerary teeth.

BACKGROUND: A supernumerary tooth was found during anatomical dissection. The position of this tooth, still impacted in the maxilla, and the associated pathology make this a rare case. METHODS: During dissection by dental students of the sagittally-sectioned head of a cadaver, a supernumerary tooth was identified in the mid-palatal area. Further dissection revealed a swelling with a thin bony covering related to the crown of the tooth. The maxilla was removed en bloc and radiographic examination, CT scanning, electron microscopy and histology were undertaken. RESULTS: The tooth had a crenula

Oral malodor associated with internal resorption.

We report a case of oral malodor associated with internal resorption. A 39-year-old male attended our hospital complaining of oral malodor. Utilizing organoleptic measurement, the halimeter test and gas chromatography, it was diagnosed as a strong halitosis caused by oral origin. The pocket probing depth of tooth 21 was 10 mm, and X-ray examination revealed a vertical bone loss around this tooth. The patient had received periodontal treatment at two dental offices previously, but the periodontal conditions and oral malodor persisted. We performed an initial periodontal preparation, however a d

Oral findings associated with primary hyperoxaluria type I.

In the present paper we report the oral findings of a patient who was diagnosed with hyperoxaluria. Hyperoxalurias can basically be classified as primary and secondary, with the first being inborn errors of metabolism and the second a result of excessive oxalate intake. Primary hyperoxalurias form a rare group of metabolic diseases that are inherited in the autosomal recessive fashion. The affected genes code for specific hepatic enzymes that are involved in glyoxylate metabolism and their deficiency results in overproduction of oxalate. Two different types are described: Primary hyperoxaluria

Detection of lingual root resorptions in the intraoral radiographs. An experimental study.

An experimental study was undertaken in an attempt 1) to describe the possibilities to detect lingual root resorptions of upper incisors in intraoral radiographs and 2) to determine the amount of reduction that is necessary in order to detect resorptions in the radiograph. The upper right central incisor was extracted from a dry skull. In a standardized way, the root was repeatedly reduced by grinding on the lingual side at an angle of 16 degrees measured from apex to the long axis of the tooth. After each reduction the tooth was replaced in the dry skull and radiographed in a standardized man

Is apex position a determining factor in the orthodontic traction duration of unilateral impacted maxillary canines? A cone-beam computed tomography-based 3-dimensional study.

INTRODUCTION: This study analyzed the influence of the 3-dimensional (3D) root apex position on the traction duration of unilateral impacted maxillary canines, compared with the cusp tip position. METHODS: Thirty-one cone-beam computed tomography scans were analyzed. Each normally erupted canine was mirrored across the midsagittal plane to create an image of its enantiomorph. The distances were measured between the root apices of the impacted canine and the enantiomorphic contralateral normally erupted canine, as well as between their cusp tips and tooth angulations. Each distance variable wa
