Children with trauma visit frequently the department of oral and maxillofacial surgery. The treatment for injured permanent teeth is different from that for injured deciduous teeth. We have experienced a case of a 9-year-old boy with an injured unerupted immature permanent tooth with tooth crown fracture. When the tooth erupted gradually, fractured pieces were removed three times, and indirect pulp capping was performed. Three years after the injury eruption was almost completed and pulp was alive, even though the dental roentgenograph showed obliteration of the crown pulp cavity.

Two fractured maxillary central incisors were restored via the crown fragment reattachment technique with adhesive systems and composite resin material. A long-term successful outcome was achieved after 4 years of follow-up. The patient presented with fractured maxillary central incisors, and a comprehensive intraoral and radiographic examination revealed that both teeth had extended crown fractures with no pulpal exposure (Class II, Ellis and Davey). The tooth fragments were thoroughly cleaned and inspected before being repositioned. Both fragments were in excellent condition with almost no p

BACKGROUND: The stress distribution of a restored tooth is different from that of an intact sound tooth. The fracture resistance of a restored tooth depends on cavity design, remaining tooth structure, and material used.
AIM: This in vitro study evaluated and compared the fracture resistance of mandibular molars restored using composite resin.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty freshly extracted, intact mandibular molars were used, with their roots embedded in acrylic resin for stability. Cavities were prepared using a No. 2 round bur and straight fissure diamond, then divided into four groups wit

The management of complicated crown-root fractures is a challenge. Intentional replantation with 180° rotation may be a useful procedure to overcome this problem. In Case 1, a 23-year-old woman with complicated crown-root fractured teeth #11, #21, and #22 was referred for treatment. All fractured teeth were extracted, rotated 180°, and replanted in a slightly extruded position. After 3 months, root canal treatment was completed and the final restorations fabricated. At the 18-month follow up, the patient was asymptomatic, the tooth was functional, and no root resorption was observed radiograph

BACKGROUND: Investigations of cuspal-coverage amalgam restorations suggest that tooth fracture is the leading cause of failure, while for Class I and II restorations, the leading cause is caries. In this study, the authors evaluated the causes of failure for a large number of cuspal-coverage restorations.
METHODS: The causes of failure for 706 cuspal-coverage amalgam restorations were determined through the use of a questionnaire. Dentists from a variety of dental schools; Army, Navy, Air Force, Public Health and Veterans Affairs dental clinics; and private practice were asked to record perti

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Under-estimating the damage caused by trauma to the dental structures may delay treatment. Timely and accurate diagnosis remains challenging in clinical practice. Radiography is an important modality for the diagnosis of traumatic injuries. The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of periapical radiography and cone beam computed tomography for the diagnosis of trauma to the anterior maxillary dentoalveolar region in children and adolescents.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Images of patients who underwent both periapical radiography and cone beam computed tomography simultaneo

A dentoalveolar fracture requires thorough clinical and radiographic examination for an accurate diagnosis to guide appropriate treatment. Dentoalveolar fractures can be classified into the following 4 groups: (1) crown/root fractures, (2) luxation/displacement of teeth, (3) avulsion, and (4) alveolar fractures. Treatment can be divided into nonrigid fixation (splinting with wires and composite) and/or rigid fixation (Erich arch bars, Risdon cable wires) depending on the extent of dentoalveolar fractures. Special considerations must be made for primary teeth and mixed dentition to avoid injuri

INTRODUCTION: A major complication after endodontic treatment is persistent pain on biting or chewing. Although unsuccessful endodontic treatment can account for such pain, pain to chewing and biting can also be a result of an unsupported or propagated crown fracture. Crown fractures that extend apically result in deterioration of the localized periodontium and ultimate loss of the tooth. To date, no predictable treatment for apically extending crown fractures exists.
METHODS: Three cases of nonsurgical excision of a propagated crown fracture and the repair of the subsequent iatrogenic perfor

INTRODUCTION: Early surgical management is often advocated for fractures of the tooth-bearing portion of the mandible. A 6-hour delay has been mentioned for the fixation of these fractures. Our aim was to bring this paradigm into question.
METHODS: All patients referred to our department from September 2012 to May 2014 for fractures of the tooth-bearing portion of the mandible were retrospectively included. For each patient, age, gender, aetiology of the fracture, and characteristics of the fractures were recorded. Tobacco and/or alcohol addictions, diabetes and mandibular dental condition we

Nanomaterials offer significant potential for disease diagnosis and dental treatments due to their unique properties, such as a large surface area and nanoscale size. According to the World Health Organization, about 3.5 billion people worldwide regularly experience dental problems, which can cause significant suffering and disrupt the sufferer's everyday activities. Dental problems, such as dental caries (tooth decay), pulpitis (inflammation of the dental pulp), periodontal disease (gum disease), tooth fractures, and impacted wisdom teeth, necessitate a multidimensional approach, involving na…

OBJECTIVES: Multilayer monolithic zirconia (M-Zr) crowns can be engineered to achieve gradational translucency and color intensity. However, this modification may compromise the mechanical strength, raising concerns regarding the ability of M-Zr crowns to withstand occlusal stresses. The effects of M-Zr crown thickness on translucency and ability to endure occlusal forces were investigated at different tooth positions (incisors, premolars, and molars). The objective was to determine the minimal thickness of M-Zr crowns used in tooth preparation to meet aesthetic and functional demands.

Anterior crown fractures are a common form of traumatic dental injuries that mainly affect the maxillary central incisors, in children and teenagers. Since the development of the adhesive dentistry, many case reports of crown fractures restored using adhesive reattachment techniques were published. Complex cases, in which more than one tooth are involved, with fractures differing from each other, require specific treatment of each fracture, taking different advantages of the different remaining tooth structures. This case report describes a patient with dissimilar crown fractures of both super

The presence of ongoing mandibular growth and tooth buds make it challenging for the treatment of mandibular fracture in paediatric. Most common and widely used method is the use of occlusion splint which are secured with the help of circumandibular wiring. The aim of this technical note was to describe a new method for the treatment of paediatric mandibular fracture in which the occlusion splint was used and stabilized with the help of suture so as to prevent minimal trauma to the soft tissue. Management of paediatric mandibular fracture is challenging and is different then that of adult. Usu

INTRODUCTION: A number of vital pulp therapy techniques have been recommended to preserve pulp vitality in teeth with complicated crown fractures, especially in young patients. Calcium hydroxide has been the gold standard as a pulp capping material, but recently mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) has been recommended. This case report describes the treatment of tooth discoloration caused by white MTA (WMTA) used for the management of a complicated crown fracture.
METHODS: A partial pulpotomy was performed with the use of WMTA after a complicated crown fracture of the upper right central incisor

One misconception in veterinary medicine is that fractured teeth do not need to be treated, or treatment should consist of extraction only. Two common causes of endodontic disease in the cat are fractures and secondary to cervical line lesions. Endodontic technique can be useful in returning a diseased tooth to normal, pain-free function. Conventional endodontics can be used to treat fractured canine teeth or partially destroyed molars. Surgical endodontics is useful in cases in which an apical seal cannot be established by conventional methods. Pulp capping can preserve a vital tooth as an al

This retrospective analysis aimed to investigate the necessity of removing the wisdom tooth in cases of angle fractures of the mandible. The study retrieved 595 mandible fractures from January 2006 to December 2021 through the Hospital Inpatient Enquiry System, of which 303 involved a fracture through the angle of the mandible, including the wisdom tooth socket. Of these, 203 (66.9%) underwent open reduction and internal fixation with retention of the third molar. The authors found that only four (2%) patients returned for the removal of plates and the retained third molar during the follow-up
