Characterizations of air pollutants at roadside monitoring stations and traffic emission effects: A case study in Tianjin, China.

To investigate the response of Roadside Monitoring Stations (RSs) to traffic-related air pollution, traffic and pollutant characteristics, influencing factors, and potential source characterization in Tianjin, China were determined based on roadside monitoring of real-world data conducted at RSs in 2022. The diurnal variation trend of pollutants at RSs was consistent with that at the National Monitoring Station (NM), with notably higher pollutant fluctuations during the morning and evening peak traffic times at RSs, where the average diurnal concentration was 41.46 % higher than that at the NM

Mitigating the adverse effects of urban environmental stress on individuals through piano performance with a natural theme: a case study from biophilia to soundscape healing.

Urban traffic-related air pollution and noise not only exert direct adverse effects on human health but also influence how individuals perceive and respond to these environmental stressors. The low-intervention strategies (e.g., outdoor music) have attracted increasing attention for their potential to alleviate physiological responses and discomfort induced by traffic-emitted pollution. The present study focuses on the mitigating effects of outdoor piano performance on the physiological responses of individuals exposed to traffic-related air pollution and noise. Field measurements are conducte

Exposure to source-specific air pollution and risk for type 2 diabetes: a nationwide study covering Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Only few epidemiological studies have investigated whether chronic exposure to air pollution from different sources have different impacts on risk of diabetes. We aimed to investigate associations between air pollution from traffic versus non-traffic sources and risk of type 2 diabetes in the Danish population. METHODS: We estimated long-term exposure to traffic and non-traffic contributions of particulate matter with a diameter <2.5 µg (PM2.5), elemental carbon (EC), ultrafine particles (UFP) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) for all persons living in Denmark for the period 2005-17. The role of traffic noise on the association between air pollution and children's lung function.

Although it has been shown that traffic-related air pollution adversely affects children's lung function, few studies have examined the infl … lated air pollution on lung function. Without taking noise into account, the detrimental effects of traffic-related pollution may be underestimated.

Traffic exposures, air pollution and outcomes in pulmonary arterial hypertension: a UK cohort study analysis.

While traffic and air pollution exposure is associated with increased mortality in numerous diseases, its association with disease severity and outcomes in pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) remains unknown.Exposure to particulate matter with a 50% cut-off aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2) and indirect measures of traffic-related air pollution (distance to main road and length of roads within buffer zones surrounding residential addresses) were estimated for 301 patients with idiopathic/heritable PAH recruited in the UK National Cohort Study of Idiopathic and Heri

Fifteen Years of Community Exposure to Heavy-Duty Emissions: Capturing Disparities over Space and Time.

Disparities in exposure to traffic-related air pollution have been widely reported. However, little work has been done to simultaneously assess the impact of various vehicle types on populations of different socioeconomic/ethnic backgrounds. In this study, we employed an extreme gradient-boosting approach to spatially distribute light-duty vehicle (LDV) and heavy-duty truck emissions across the city of Toronto from 2006 to 2020. We examined associations between these emissions and different marginalization indices across this time span. Despite a large decrease in traffic emissions, disparitie

Proximity to traffic is associated with worse symptom severity in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps.

BACKGROUND: Environmental exposures may be associated with increased severity of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). However, research examining associations of traffic related air pollution with CRS is limited. The purpose of this study was to determine the association between residential traffic proximity and CRS with nasal polyposis (CRSwNP) severity in an existing database of adults in the United States. METHODS: This study was conducted on data gathered from 181 participants documented in the NAVIGATE I and NAVIGATE II randomized control trials within the OPTINOSE database. Zip codes for the t

Impact of low emission zones and local traffic policies on ambient air pollution concentrations.

BACKGROUND: Evaluations of the effectiveness of air pollution policy interventions are scarce. This study investigated air pollution at street level before and after implementation of local traffic policies including low emission zones (LEZ) directed at heavy duty vehicles (trucks) in five Dutch cities. METHODS: Measurements of PM(10), PM(2.5), 'soot', NO(2), NO(x), and elemental composition of PM(10) and PM(2.5) were conducted simultaneously at eight streets, six urban background locations and four suburban background locations before (2008) and two years after implementation of the policies

[Air pollution from traffic and the risk of tumors].

This paper describes the epidemiological evidence on lung cancer and childhood leukemia in relation to traffic-related air pollution, with particular reference to diesel exhausts, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and benzene. Recent epidemiological studies strengthen the hypothesis of an increased lung cancer risk related to residential exposure to air pollution and to occupational exposure to diesel exhausts. The evidence on the carcinogenicity of several PAH mixtures comes from occupational studies, while the risk incurred by the general population is difficult to estimate. A few paper

Air pollution from traffic and the development of respiratory infections and asthmatic and allergic symptoms in children.

Despite the important contribution of traffic sources to urban air quality, relatively few studies have evaluated the effects of traffic-related air pollution on health, such as its influence on the development of asthma and other childhood respiratory diseases. We examined the relationship between traffic-related air pollution and the development of asthmatic/allergic symptoms and respiratory infections in a birth cohort (n approximately 4,000) study in The Netherlands. A validated model was used to assign outdoor concentrations of traffic-related air pollutants (nitrogen dioxide, particulate

Proximity to roadways and pregnancy outcomes.

Adverse birth outcomes are associated with exposure to air pollution during pregnancy. Road proximity is a simple, widely available metric for capturing local variation in exposure to traffic-related air pollution. We characterized maternal exposure to traffic-related air pollution during pregnancy using residential proximity to major roadways among 2004-2008 singleton births in NC. Controlling for maternal race, age, education, nativity, marital status, and tobacco use, and season of birth, parity, infant sex, and Census tract-level urbanization and income, we evaluated the association betwee

[Allergic respiratory diseases and outdoor air pollution].

INTRODUCTION: After having increased for some time, the prevalence of allergic diseases may have reached a plateau. During this increase, considerable concomitant changes in air pollution have occurred. Photo-oxidant air pollution, related to traffic, has become preponderant. The implication of air pollution in the epidemic of allergies is still debated. BACKGROUND: Experimental studies have suggested that the effect of air pollutants, including particulates and ozone, on the worsening and even the induction of allergies is biologically plausible. In addition, epidemiological studies have sho

Modifiable exposures to air pollutants related to asthma phenotypes in the first year of life in children of the EDEN mother-child cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Studies have shown diverse strength of evidence for the associations between air pollutants and childhood asthma, but these associations have scarcely been documented in the early life. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impacts of various air pollutants on the development of asthma phenotypes in the first year of life. METHODS: Adjusted odds ratios were estimated to assess the relationships between exposures to air pollutants and single and multi-dimensional asthma phenotypes in the first year of life in children of the EDEN mother-child cohort study (n = 1,765 mother-

Does traffic exhaust contribute to the development of asthma and allergic sensitization in children: findings from recent cohort studies.

The aim of this review was to assess the evidence from recent prospective studies that long-term traffic pollution could contribute to the development of asthma-like symptoms and allergic sensitization in children. We have reviewed cohort studies published since 2002 and found in PubMed in Oct 2008. In all, 13 papers based on data from 9 cohorts have evaluated the relationship between traffic exposure and respiratory health. All surveys reported associations with at least some of the studied respiratory symptoms. The outcome varied, however, according to the age of the child. Nevertheless, the

Respiratory hospitalizations of children and residential exposure to traffic air pollution in Jerusalem.

Although exposure to traffic-related air pollution has been reported to be associated with respiratory morbidity in children, this association has not been examined in Israel. Jerusalem is ranked among the leading Israeli cities in transport-related air pollution. This case-control study examined whether pediatric hospitalization for respiratory diseases in Jerusalem is related to residential exposure to traffic-related air pollution. Cases (n=4844) were Jerusalem residents aged 0-14 years hospitalized for respiratory illnesses between 2000 and 2006. These were compared to children admitted el

Traffic-related particulate matter exposure induces nephrotoxicity in vitro and in vivo.

Traffic emission is responsible for most small-sized particulate matter (PM) air pollution in urban areas. Several recent studies have indicated that traffic-related PM may aggravate kidney disease. Furthermore, exposure to particulate air pollution may be related to the risk of chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the underlying molecular mechanisms have not been adequately addressed. In the present study, we studied the mechanisms of renal damage that might be associated with exposure to PM. In a real world of whole-body exposure to traffic-related PM model for 3-6 months, PM in urban ambi

Road traffic noise, air pollution, and risk of dementia - results from the Betula project.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence for a negative impact of traffic-related air pollution on risk of dementia. However, the contribution of noise exposure to this association has been rarely examined. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the individual and combined effect of noise and air pollution on risk of dementia. METHODS: Data on dementia incidence over a 15 year period was obtained from the Betula project, a longitudinal study on health and ageing. Estimates of annual mean levels of nitrogen oxides (NOx) at the participants' residential address were obtained using a land-use regressi

Childhood asthma and exposure to traffic and nitrogen dioxide.

BACKGROUND: Evidence for a causal relationship between traffic-related air pollution and asthma has not been consistent across studies, and comparisons among studies have been difficult because of the use of different indicators of exposure. METHODS: We examined the association between traffic-related pollution and childhood asthma in 208 children from 10 southern California communities using multiple indicators of exposure. Study subjects were randomly selected from participants in the Children's Health Study. Outdoor nitrogen dioxide (NO2) was measured in summer and winter outside the home …
