BACKGROUND: Endothelial dysfunction (ED) is a common precursor and denominator of cardiovascular events including development of atherosclerosis. AIMS: Since donor age of 45 years or more is considered a relative contraindication for pancreas transplantation (PTx), we herein report our experience with these donors.
METHODS: Pancreases from donors aged 45 years or older were used in 16 of 147 PTx procedures (11%). METHODS: The charts of 38 children who underwent corneal transplantation for congenital corneal opacities from 1988 to 1999 at the Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario, were reviewed. INTRODUCTION: Non-heart beating donors (NHBD) are widely encouraged to avert the critical shortage in the kidney donor pool. Ischaemic injury at the time of cardiac arrest in the NHBD is more pronounced and therefore the kidneys resulting are considered marginal. Three major double-blind trials in kidney transplantation patients have shown that mycophenolic acid (mycophenolate mofetil), added to an immunosuppressive regimen consisting of cyclosporine and prednisone, reduces the incidence of acute rejection after kidney transplantation by 50%, during the first six months. This statistically significant reduction is achieved equally with daily doses of 2 or of 3 g. Between 1989 and April 1993 29 grafts from the scapula region have been harvested for reconstruction in the head and neck area. 7 out of 20 osteocutaneous grafts have been used for reconstructions in the maxillary/midface area. The limited availability of suitable size-matched donor whole organs has been a major cause of morbidity and mortality in infants and children requiring liver transplantation. Techniques for transplanting segments of the liver have successfully addressed this problem. The surgical anatomy of the left hepatic lobe transplant is unique in three primary respects: the cut edge, the presence of an enteric Roux loop for biliary drainage, and the alteration in the position and number of hepatic vessels. The spectrum of normal imaging findings in 17 left-lobe allografts is illustrated.
