Predicting the severity and prognosis of trismus after intensity-modulated radiation therapy for oral cancer patients by magnetic resonance imaging.

To develop magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) indicators to predict trismus outcome for post-operative oral cavity cancer patients who received adjuvant intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), 22 patients with oral cancer treated with IMRT were studied over a two-year period. Signal abnormality scores (SA scores) were computed from Likert-type ratings of the abnormalities of nine masticator structures and compared with the Mann-Whitney U-test and Kruskal-Wallis one-way ANOVA test between groups. Seventeen patients (77.3%) experienced different degrees of trismus during the two-year follow-

Is Low-Level Laser Treatment Effective in Reducing Pain, Swelling, and Trismus After Removing Impacted Maxillary and Mandibular Third Molars?

BACKGROUND: The most common side effects of wisdom teeth removal are postoperative pain, swelling, and trismus. The efficacy of low-level laser treatment (LLLT) in reducing these side effects remains controversial. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of LLLT on pain, swelling and trismus after surgical removal of upper and lower wisdom teeth. The investigators hypothesize that the use of LLL will reduce pain, swelling and trismus compared to the mouth side treated with placebo laser (PL). STUDY DESIGN: This double-blind, randomized, split-mouth study involved

Impact of dexamethasone-enhanced anaesthetics on postoperative pain, oedema, and trismus following third molar extraction: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

The extraction of third molars (3Ms) is frequently associated with postoperative inflammation and discomfort. This systematic review aimed to compare the efficacy of combining local anaesthetics with dexamethasone (treatment group) versus local anaesthetics alone (control group) in 3M surgeries. A comprehensive search of PubMed, Cochrane CENTRAL, Virtual Health Library, and Embase was conducted on June 9, 2025, to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing outcomes such as pain, oedema, and trismus. Of 300 studies initially identified, nine met inclusion criteria for qualitative sy

Single-session extraoral photobiomodulation reduces early postoperative pain but not edema or trismus after impacted mandibular third molar extraction: a randomized controlled trial.

Postoperative pain, edema, and trismus are frequent complications following impacted mandibular third molar surgery. While photobiomodulation (PBM) is a proposed adjunctive therapy, clinical evidence remains controversial. This study evaluated the effects of single-session extraoral dual-wavelength PBM (650 + 904 nm) applied immediately after extraction on postoperative pain, edema, trismus, and quality of life (QoL). This prospective RCT enrolled 70 patients (mean age: 22.04 ± 2.61 years) with asymptomatic mesioangular impacted mandibular third molars (Pell-Gregory Class IB). Participants wer

The effect of replacing dental needles between subsequent inferior alveolar nerve blocks on pain and trismus - a double blinded, randomised split-mouth study.

BACKGROUND: Inferior alveolar Nerve Blocks are widely used in dental practice for achieving anaesthesia in the mandibular teeth. It is widely accepted that in order for this type of injection to be effective, the needle needs to penetrate a substantial depth of soft tissues as well as make contact with bone. This routinely leads to both blunting and barbing of the needle tip suggesting that a needle change is preferable for any subsequent injection as this will result in less tissue damage and pain for patient's. The study aimed to verify whether a change in needle affected measures of pain an

Effects of LED photobiomodulation on pain, oedema, trismus, and the quality of life following the extraction of the mandibular third molar: a randomized blinded clinical trial.

The extraction of the third molar is a frequent surgical procedure often associated with postoperative sequelae such as pain, oedema, and trismus, which can negatively impact patients' quality of life. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial aimed to evaluate the efficacy of low-level light-emitting diode (LED) photobiomodulation (660 nm, continuous wave) in reducing these sequelae after mandibular third molar surgery. Forty-two patients were allocated to an active LED group (n = 21) or a placebo group (n = 21). Pain (visual analogue scale), oedema (linear facial measu

Effect of intrasocket application of hyaluronic acid on pain, swelling, and trismus after surgical extraction of impacted mandibular third molar - A randomized control trial.

INTRODUCTION: Mandibular third molar removal is one of the most widely performed treatments in the oral cavity. Nevertheless, surgeons often encounter undesirable postoperative sequelae. These inflammatory responses after wisdom teeth surgery may badly affect a patients' quality of life. Though traditional measures such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids proposed for control of postoperative complications work well, their potential side effects have led to a search for an easily applicable way to reduce postoperative pain and swelling.
