UNLABELLED: The tuberculin skin test (TST) has low sensitivity for the diagnosis of tuberculosis (TB). QuantiFERON-TB Gold (QFT-G) is an IFN-gamma-release assay that measures the release of interferon-gamma after stimulation in vitro by Mycobacterium tuberculosis antigens using ELISA. The main advantage of this assay compared with TST is the lack of cross-reaction with Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) as well as most of non-tuberculous mycobacteria. The aim of our study is to compare QFT-G with TST for the detection of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among patients with systemic lupus eryth

RATIONALE: Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB)-specific interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) are an alternative or adjunct to the tuberculin skin test (TST) in identifying recent contacts with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI), but there are scarce data directly comparing performance of the tests.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the agreement between both IGRAs and to determine which contacts were most likely to represent LTBI, the QuantiFERON-TB-Gold In Tube assay (QFT) and the T-Spot.TB test (T-Spot) were compared in TST-positive persons recently exposed to pulmonary tuberculosis cases.

The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of the tuberculin skin test (TST) and the quantiferon test (QFT) for detecting latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) in health care workers (HCWs). Seventy-six participants who were working in Duzce University Hospital, where tuberculosis patients were being treated, were included in the study. TST was performed according to the Mantoux technique. QFT was performed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. A positive TST result was defined as an induration diameter of > or = 15 mm. TSTs were positive in 41 of 76 participants (53.9%) an

OBJECTIVE AND SETTING: We evaluated a rapid-format antibody card test and the tuberculin skin test for diagnosis of active tuberculosis (TB) in high (Cairo, Egypt) and low (St. Louis, USA) prevalence areas.
DESIGN: Prospective study of hospitalized TB patients and controls with other chest diseases.
RESULTS: Test performance varied significantly in the two study sites. The antibody test detected 87% of 71 smear-positive pulmonary TB cases (86% of smear-negative pulmonary cases and 48% of TB meningitis cases) in Egypt; specificity was 82%. The tuberculin test was highly sensitive in Egypt in …

Screening with tuberculin remains widely used in humans and livestock for detecting mycobacterial immune sensitization, but tuberculin skin test (TST) interpretation is influenced by Bacillus Calmette-Guérin vaccination, environmental non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), cutoff selection, and epidemiological context. The TST uses purified protein derivative (PPD), a complex mycobacterial antigen preparation, to elicit delayed-type hypersensitivity measured as local skin induration. Aquaculture vaccination is established for farmed fish, whereas vaccines targeting fish mycobacteriosis remain lar

BACKGROUND: The tuberculin skin test (TST) identifies individuals at high risk of developing tuberculosis (TB) but poses many challenges. The blood monocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio (MLR) could be an alternative, as extremes in MLR have been associated with increased risk of TB disease.
METHODS: At a primary care clinic in Johannesburg, a differential white blood cell count and TST was performed in adults starting antiretroviral treatment (ART) without symptoms suggestive of active TB.
RESULTS: Of 259 participants, 171 had valid results of whom 30% (51/171) were TST positive and the median MLR wa

UNLABELLED: Early studies in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) reported increased incidence of tuberculosis. The tuberculin skin test (TST) is the technique of choice to detect latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) but has several limitations.
OBJECTIVES: We compared TST and the newer T.SPOT.TB test to diagnose LTBI in SLE patients.
METHODS: In this observational cohort study conducted between August 2009 and February 2012, we recruited 92 patients from those attending the SLE clinic of our university hospital. Data recorded were epidemiological and sociodemographic characteris

The tuberculin skin test (TST) measures the intensity of antimycobacterial acquired immunity and is used to diagnose latent infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. We report evidence for a codominant gene explaining ∼65% of the TST variability. Disregarding the host genetic background may lead to misclassifications of TST-based diagnosis of latent M. tuberculosis infection.

Tuberculosis (TB) in deer is a serious zoonotic disease of worldwide distribution. Detection of infected animals is usually performed using single or comparative skin-testing (SST/CST), although false responses due to sensitization to other mycobacteria may occur, hampering diagnostic specificity. We describe the evolution of the responses to the SST, CST and to an in-house serological assay in a red deer farm subjected to regular TB testing in southern Spain in an attempt to understand the dynamics of possible non-specific reactions occurring under field conditions. We performed 2288 skin-tes

A false-positive tuberculin skin test (TST) may be a result of T-cell sensitivity due to Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccination or exposure to non-tuberculous mycobacteria, thus leading to unnecessary isoniazid preventive therapy, especially in low-risk populations. Unlike TST, T-SPOT.TB is not confounded by BCG vaccination or exposure to most of the other non-tuberculous mycobacteria, because this assay is based on enumeration of interferon-gamma-secreting T cells in response to Mycobacterium tuberculosis-specific antigens. We compared the TST with T-SPOT.TB with respect to different TST c

BACKGROUND: We analyse whether the tuberculin skin test is a good survival marker in a cohort of pulmonary tuberculosis patients with HIV infection (PTB/HIV). In all, 494 PTB/HIV patients were enrolled in Barcelona (Spain) between January 1992 and December 1994 in the Tuberculosis Program of Barcelona. The main data problem was the large proportion of missing values in the covariates percentage of T CD4+ lymphocytes and the tuberculin test results: only 157 patients (31.8%) had both covariates recorded.
METHODS: Patients were dichotomized into two groups according to their level of immunosupp…
