BACKGROUND: Extrapulmonary tuberculosis has been an AIDS-defining condition. Individual studies that highlight the association between HIV and extrapulmonary TB are available. Our objectives were to synthesis evidence on the association between extrapulmonary tuberculosis and HIV and to explore the effective preventive measures of these two diseases.
METHODS: This is a meta-analysis of observational studies reporting effect estimates on how HIV is associated with extrapulmonary tuberculosis. We searched for the eligible studies in the electronic databases using search terms related to HIV and

Nine modifications of the Gram method were tested with respect to their ability to stain mycobacteria. The results obtained were rather variable. Moreover it appeared that not all the methods would reliably visualize mycobacteria within histological sections. In particular, the mycobacteria occurring in a case of fibrocaseous tuberculosis appeared to be less stainable by the Gram method. If the Ziehl-Neelsen and the Gram method were combined to stain a single section, only some mycobacteria appeared to take the blue Gram stain.

Esophageal tuberculosis is a rare manifestation of extrapulmonary tuberculosis, often misdiagnosed due to its nonspecific clinical features and resemblance to malignancy. We report the case of a 65-year-old immunocompetent woman with no prior medical history who presented with an 8-kg weight loss over three months and progressive dysphagia. Laboratory investigations revealed leukocytosis without other abnormalities, and HIV serology was negative. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy showed an ulcerated and exophytic lesion in the distal third of the esophagus. Histopathological examination reveale

Tuberculosis is a prevalent public health problem especially in the poor developing countries and results in significant mortality. Albeit tuberculosis almost always affects any organ or system of the body, abdominal tuberculosis is less frequent; moreover, tuberculous appendicitis is very rare with an incidence estimated at about 0.1-0.6% of all gastrointestinal tuberculosis. The purpose of this report was to present an unusual case of primary tuberculous appendicitis and the approach used for accurate diagnosis as well as a current update on the disease. We are reporting a 30-year-old male w

Tuberculosis is caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a slow-growing aerobic bacillus. The primary site of infections can be in the lungs, mediastinum lymph nodes, mesentery, gastrointestinal tract, genitourinary system, or any other viscera. We described a case of a 52-year-old Indonesian female who presented weakness in upper and lower extremities with low back pain and stiffness of the muscle since 4 months ago and getting worse over 1 week. She has no history of pulmonary tuberculosis. Then the patient underwent a laboratory examination, chest X-ray, vertebrae X-ray, and MRI examination fo

Two patients with tuberculosis complicated with disseminated intravascular coagulation are presented. The first patient had spleenic and mesenteric lymph nodes tuberculosis (accompanied by gastrointestinal symptoms (diarrhoea) lasting for several years) in which DIC was terminal fatal complication. Coagulation disorder was characterized by a decrease of fibrinogen concentration in blood, thrombocytopenia and other disorders as well as haemorrhagic syndrome. The second patient had miliary tuberculosis presented by X-ray changes on the lungs, granuloma in the liver and positive cultures in the s

A computed tomographic (CT) analysis of 36 patients with differential diagnosis of intestinal tuberculosis (IT) or Crohn's disease (CD) in barium gastrointestinal studies was undertaken to identify distinguishing bowel wall or mesenteric features which could provide a radiological definitive diagnosis. Final diagnoses obtained in 32 cases were tuberculosis (N = 18), CD (N = 9), carcinoid (N = 2), chronic appendicitis (N = 2) and bowel infarction (N = 1). In IT, the bowel wall changes were varied: absence of wall thickening (N = 6), minimal asymmetric wall thickening with and without mucosal te

Although the predominant form of tuberculosis is pulmonary disease, an increasing number of cases with extra-pulmonary involvement have been reported. The diagnosis of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis is often difficult because of its protean clinical manifestations and non-specific laboratory findings. Abdominal lymph node involvement may be present alone or in combination with involvement of the gastrointestinal tract, peritoneum, and solid viscera. Tuberculous epididymitis occurs sporadically and represents a specific secondary subacute or chronic inflammatory process involving the epididymis.

BACKGROUND: The accurate diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis usually takes a long time and requires a high index of suspicion in clinic practice. Eighty-eight immune-competent patients with abdominal tuberculosis were grouped according to symptoms at presentation and followed prospectively in order to investigate the effect of symptomatic presentation on clinical diagnosis and prognosis.
METHODS: Based upon the clinical presentation, the patients were divided into groups such as non-specific abdominal pain & less prominent in bowel habit, ascites, alteration in bowel habit, acute abdomen and

Cutaneous tuberculosis represents the fifth extrapulmonary form in Morocco after pleural, lymph node, urogenital, and intestinal tuberculosis. It is recognized to form a continuous immunopathologic spectrum, ranging from a high intensity to a low intensity of cell-mediated immunity, which explains the multiplicity and heterogeneity of anatomo-clinical forms. Association of multiple forms in the same patient is really rare. In this regard, we report a case of scrofuloderma on axillary tuberculosis adenitis associated to a lupus vulgaris in an immunocompetent patient, which was confirmed by hist

BACKGROUND: Disseminated tuberculosis is an uncommon but devastating form of tuberculosis, possibly developing with the immune response of patients. COVID-19 infection may produce an immunosuppressive effect with possible implications for tuberculosis dissemination.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old female patient with a history of tuberculous pleurisy presented to the hospital with a high fever and life-threatening dyspnea after contracting a COVID-19 infection. Her condition deteriorated rapidly with grand mal epilepsy and acute gastrointestinal bleeding with a grossly depressed CD4 T-cell c

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of intestinal tuberculosis poses a dilemma to physicians due to nonspecific symptoms like abdominal pain, fever, nausea, and a change in bowel habit. In particular, the distinction between inflammatory bowel disease and intestinal tuberculosis remains challenging.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old man from Colombia presented with fever, night sweats, and progressive lower abdominal pain. Computed tomography revealed a thickening of the bowel wall with a mesenterial lymphadenopathy, ascites ,and a pleural tumor mass. Histology of intestinal and pleural biopsy specimens sho

HISTORY AND ADMISSION FINDINGS: A 47-year-old Angolan complained of upper abdominal pain, fever, weight loss and night sweats. Abdominal ultrasound performed by his general practitioner showed enlarged lymph nodes at the liver hilum. Physical examination was negative except for slight tenderness over the right upper abdomen.
INVESTIGATIONS: A tuberculin skin test was clearly positive. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed multiple gastric ulcers and the Helicobacter pylori test was positive. The lymph nodes at the liver hilum were needle-aspirated, this showed granulomatous inflammation s

UNLABELLED: Behçet's disease (BD) is a systemic vasculitis characterized by recurrent orogenital ulceration and several systemic manifestations (such as gastrointestinal involvement, vascular disease or arthritis). The pathogenesis is still unknown but the trigger role of certain pathogens such as Mycobacterium tuberculosis is well documented. Furthermore, patients with BD are more susceptible to tuberculosis due to immunity defects. Here, we describe the case of a 70-year-old woman with a history of recurrent oral aphthae and inflammatory arthritis presenting with extensive thrombosis of left

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis is a chronic infectious disease that often has a latent period after the initial infection. Tuberculosis most often affects the lungs but it can also affect other parts of the body. Vietnam is in pandemic area of tuberculosis.
CASE REPORT: We present a rare case of a 42-year-old male patient admitted to the hospital with a history of progressive jaundice. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a 26 × 33 mm tuberculous mass located at the intersection between the cystic duct and the common hepatic duct, leading to dilation of the intrahepatic biliary ducts on both

The increase in cases of tuberculosis that has occurred with the increasing number of individuals infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has focused attention on the problems in diagnosing and treating tuberculosis. While it is primarily considered a pulmonary disease, tuberculosis has the potential to infect almost every organ system via lymphohematogenous dissemination during the initial pulmonary infection. Since 1984 the incidence of extrapulmonary tuberculosis has increased at an even faster rate than that of pulmonary tuberculosis. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis is considered
