Spinal tuberculosis occurring after a closed bursting fracture of the vertebrae.

INTRODUCTION: Only 12 cases of musculoskeletal tuberculosis (TB) that occurred at the site of recent blunt trauma have been previously described. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 43-year-old previously healthy man experienced an uncomplicated bursting fracture at the L2 vertebra without any spinal tuberculosis (ST)-associated evidence. During the conservative treatment, he was in good physical condition with back pain totally subsiding and occasional ambulation in a spinal brace, whereas 7 months after the original trauma, he presented with a characteristic manifestation of ST at the same vertebra.

[Application of freeze-dried cancellous allograft in treatment of spinal tuberculosis].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the efficacy of freeze-dried cancellous allograft in the treatment of spinal tuberculosis. METHODS: From January 1999 to August 2004, there were 31 cases of spinal tuberculosis who underwent surgery. The freeze-dried cancellous allograft was used as grafting material in all the cases. The cancellous allograft was packed in a titanium mesh cage or an artificial vertebrae, and then used as a strut graft anteriorly to implant into the bone defect after the radical debridement, and the instrumentation was done. RESULTS: Twenty-three cases were followed up 1.5 years to 5

Spinal tuberculosis with concomitant spondylolisthesis: coexisting entities or 'cause and effect'?

STUDY DESIGN: Report of three unusual cases of coexisting spondylolisthesis and tuberculosis in the same patient. OBJECTIVES: To document the rare occurrence and attempt to postulate the probable reasons for such an association. SETTING: Tertiary care teaching hospital in a developing country. METHODS: This communication reports the outcome of three cases where there was spondylolisthesis and spinal tuberculosis in the same patient. The probable reason for such an occurrence is discussed along with a literature review relevant to this topic. RESULTS: The cases responded favorably to conser

Stablization of the spine in the surgical treatment of severe spinal tuberculosis in children.

This is a 5- to 10-year survey of 160 children, all with severe surgically-treated spinal tuberculosis. The treatment consisted of: anterior spinal fusion alone, anterior with posterior fusion, posterior fusion alone and posterior with anterior fusion. The results indicate that in the less severe cases, where an abscess is not evident on plain radiographs, psoterior fusion alone can be of value in the growing spine. In severe cases, especially where an abscess is seen, the combined approaches give the best results. The risk of posterior fusion alone is an unsatisfactory, long term neurological

Unlocking the Diagnostic Potential: A Systematic Review of Biomarkers in Spinal Tuberculosis.

Background/Objectives: Spinal tuberculosis (STB) is frequently misdiagnosed due to the multitude of symptoms it presents with. This review aimed to investigate the biomarkers that have the potential to accurately diagnose spinal TB in its early stages. Methods: A systematic search was conducted across multiple databases, yielding a diverse range of biomarkers categorized into complete blood count parameters, host inflammatory responses, bacterial antigens, and RNA-based markers. This review included studies on spinal tuberculosis patients, including blood serum biomarkers, while exclusion crit

Pediatric and adult meningeal, parenchymal, and spinal tuberculosis: A neuroimaging review.

Neurotuberculosis is defined as a tuberculous infection of the meninges, brain parenchyma, vessels, cranial and spinal nerves, spinal cord, skull, and spine that can occur either in a localized or in a diffuse form. It is a heterogeneous disease characterized by many imaging appearances and it has been defined as "the great mimicker" due to similarities with many other conditions. The diagnosis of central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis (TB) is based on clinical presentation, neuroimaging findings, laboratory and microbiological findings, and comprehensive evaluation of the response to anti-

Spinal nocardiosis: A rare tuberculosis mimic in an HIV infected patient.

Despite advances in treatment, human immunodeficiency virus/tuberculosis (HIV/TB) coinfection remains highly prevalent in selected low- and middle income countries. The diagnosis of tuberculosis frequently proves challenging in the setting of advanced HIV, as patients may present with atypical features. A high index of suspicion must be maintained for TB in this setting, but it is critical that alternative diagnoses are considered. A myriad of opportunistic infections may mimic TB and a definitive microbiological diagnosis prior to TB treatment should always be sought. We report on a case of a

Atypical imaging of spinal tuberculosis: a case report and review of literature.

This is a case report of spinal tuberculosis combined with sacroiliac joint tuberculosis, pulmonary tuberculosis, chest wall tuberculosis and tuberculous pleurisy and the image of the patient is rare, special and not typical and it looks like a halo sign. It has an important reference value for the diagnosis of spine tuberculosis although it is a rare imaging manifestation and diagnosis was confirmed by pathology after the surgery. Therefore atypical imaging is often appeared in clinical practice and it is meaningful and necessary for the diagnosis of atypical spinal tuberculosis combined with

Study on anterior and posterior approaches for spinal tuberculosis: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Timely and appropriate surgical intervention can enhance the stability of spine, eliminate the compression on spinal cord and prevent the further development the complications that may follow. However, there is no optimum surgical approach that has been agreed by surgeons. OBJECTIVE: Incidence rate of spinal tuberculosis is still high in many developing countries. Except from chemotherapy, some patients require surgical treatment at certain phases of disease development. However, there is still not a standard operative procedure for spinal tuberculosis in the current research, and

A case of spinal tuberculosis from the middle ages in Transylvania (Romania).

STUDY DESIGN: Case report. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the paleopathology presented in the skeleton of a 45- to 50-year-old man indicative of tuberculous spondylitis and to confirm by the detection of ancient DNA. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease prevalent in both present and ancient human populations. The disease is primarily located within the lungs; although characteristic bone lesions can lead to a clear diagnosis, skeletal TB occurs in only 5% to 6% of TB infections, even in historical cases. In addition, the visual appearance of human skeletal remai
