BACKGROUND: Perioperative indwelling urinary catheterization remains common in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty. This study sought to examine the effect of routine catheterization following total hip arthroplasty performed under spinal anesthesia on urinary complications.
METHODS: A total of 991 consecutive patients who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty under spinal anesthesia over a 4-year period were retrospectively reviewed. Major postoperative urinary retention (POUR) was defined as persistent retention following 2 straight catheterizations, which required postoperative i…

BACKGROUND: Urine cultures obtained by bladder catheterization can be contaminated by bacteria colonizing the distal urethra. Data are inconclusive regarding the potential advantage of discarding the first few urine drops obtained by bladder catheterization and testing only the sample of late-stream urine, thus reducing the likelihood of urine culture contamination.
AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate whether the incidence of contaminated urine cultures obtained by bladder catheterization can be reduced by splitting urine samples into 'initial' and 'late' samples and using only 'late'

A 6-year-old boy presented to ER with acute pain in right iliac fossa without any history of lower urinary tract symptoms, haematuria and urinary catheterization. Ultrasound showed loculated cystic area in pelvis with non-visualized appendix. A CT scan abdomen and pelvis revealed loculated, multi-septated cystic lesion in right hemipelvis thought to be a collection from possible appendicular inflammation / perforation. The laboratory findings revealed raised CRP and normal urine routine examination and culture. Exploratory laparotomy revealed cystic urinary bladder growth involving dome with n…

Catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) are the most common nosocomial infection in developed countries, and Candida species are among the most frequently isolated organisms. Despite this, little is known about the biology, host-pathogen interactions, or outcomes of these infections, and this has led to uncertain guidelines for clinical management of Candida CAUTIs. Here, we develop the first physiologically relevant artificial urine medium (AUM) that supports fungal growth in a manner similar to, but more consistent than, human urine samples. We demonstrate that human catheter-a

Eosinophilic cystitis (EC) is an uncommon diagnosis, mimicking urothelial carcinoma. Multiple etiologies including iatrogenic, infectious, and neoplastic have been suggested, effecting both adults and pediatric population. A retrospective clinicopathologic review of patients with EC in our institution between 2003 and 2021 was conducted. Age, gender, presenting symptoms, cystoscopic findings, and history of urinary bladder instrumentation were recorded. Histologically, urothelial and stromal changes were noted, and mucosal eosinophilic infiltration was graded as mild (scattered eosinophils in

INTRODUCTION: Patients with myelomeningocele often use clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) for renal preservation and to promote urinary continence. While starting CIC at an early age is associated with better renal outcomes, the impact of age of CIC initiation on continence outcomes has not been examined.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether earlier CIC initiation is associated with higher likelihood of current urinary continence for patients with myelomeningocele.
STUDY DESIGN: Data of patients aged ≥5 years at last visit were obtained from 35 spina bifida clinics participating in the Nation

OBJECTIVE: Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is a preferred method of bladder management for many patients with spinal cord injury (SCI), but long-term adherence is low. The aim of this study is to identify factors associated with low urinary quality of life (QoL) in SCI adults performing CIC.
METHODS: Over 1.5 years, 1479 adults with SCI were prospectively enrolled through the Neurogenic Bladder Research Group registry, and 753 on CIC with no prior surgeries were included. Injury characteristics, complications, hand function, and Neurogenic Bladder Symptom Score (NBSS) were analyzed.

INTRODUCTION: The primary goal of urologic management in children with spina bifida is to reduce the risk of urinary tract infection (UTI) and associated renal injury. While clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) has been the mainstay of treatment, recent studies have suggested that this approach is not without risk. The objective of this study was to examine the association between alternative bladder management strategies and UTI in infants and toddlers with spina bifida.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on spina bifida patients, aged 0-3 years, seen in a multidisciplin
