The ponto-cerebellar projection in the rat: differential projections to sublobules of the uvula.

Microinjections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) were made in different sublobules of the uvula (lobule IX, a, b, and c of Larsell, 1952) of the cerebellar cortex in the rat. These injections resulted in retrograde labeling of cells located in the pontine nuclei. Sublobule IXa receives a predominant input from a single column of cells situated in a dorsointermediate position in the caudal pontine nuclei. Sublobules IXb and IXc receive a pontine projection from two different columns of cells, one medial and one lateral. The location of the labeled cells in the lateral part of the caudal pons sug…

Cleft uvula: a microform of facial clefts and its genetic basis.

Prevalence estimates of cleft uvula (CU) in two Amerindian populations (and sib analyses in one) were obtained and compared with estimates from other racial groups. The data and their analyses support the contention that CU is a microform of facial clefts. The relative and parallel frequencies of facial and uvula clefts in different races and the sib analyses are most consistent with a quasicontinuous polygenic basis for facial clefts and their microforms.

Heterogeneous Predisposing Factors and Etiology of Edema of the Uvula in a Spanish Population.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Edema of the uvula (EU) may appear in isolation or in association with clinical manifestations such as urticaria, angioedema, and anaphylaxis. EU may lead to upper airway obstruction, provoking obstructive respiratory distress and asphyxia. Objective: We sought to investigate the etiology of and predisposing factors for EU in a large population of patients referred to an outpatient clinic. METHODS: In this 3-year follow-up cohort study, 171 patients presenting with EU were identified and classified as having isolated EU or nonisolated EU. The etiology of each patient…

Isolated oedema of the uvula induced by intense snoring and ACE inhibitor.

A case of snoring-induced angioedema of uvula is described in a patient who was treated with ACE inhibitor. The patient partially responded to complement C1-inhibitor concentrate and did not suffer any recurrences after the medication was withdrawn. When encountering a patient suffering from swellings of the orofacial area it should be considered whether the mechanism is mast-cell associated or not, as classical antiallergic treatment is ineffective in non-mast-cell-associated disease (ie, bradykinin-mediated angioedema). Other causes of uvular oedema are also discussed.

Haemangioma of the uvula causing loud habitual snoring--a rare entity.

Mucosal haemangiomas are unusual and typically involve frequently traumatised areas such as the lip, buccal mucosa and lateral borders of the tongue. Uvular haemangioma is rare and to our knowledge, has never been reported to cause obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA). We report an unusual case of uvular haemangioma causing loud habitual snoring and symptoms suggestive of OSA. This case report illustrates a rare cause of OSA and demonstrates the efficacy of surgery for obvious obstructive lesions of the pharynx.

[A bifid uvula in a patient with schizophrenia as a sign of 22q11 deletion syndrome].

A bifid uvula and nasal speech were observed in a 25-year-old woman who was referred because of psychotic complaints. Fluorescence in situ hybridisation (FISH) research for the 22q11 deletion was carried out and the deletion was found. The 22q11-deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is characterised by somatic abnormalities including cardiovascular defects, velopharyngeal anomalies and typical facial characteristics. There is an increasing interest in the cognitive and psychiatric consequences of 22q11DS. There is a high prevalence of learning disabilities and the delayed development of language and spe…

Morphometric analysis of the uvula in patients with sleep-related breathing disorders.

The upper-airway mucosa in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) patients and snorers is often described as edematous and hyperplastic. The morphologic aspects of the pharyngeal mucosa, and in particular the mucosa of the uvula and soft palate, in OSA patients are, however, not well described. The aim of the present retrospective study therefore was to perform histologic examination of the pharyngeal mucosa obtained from patients with various forms of sleep-related breathing disorders, including primary snoring. A midsagittal section of uvulas obtained by uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) was investiga…

Isolated epithelial cysts of the uvula in children: a report of three cases.

Epidermoid cysts are unusual benign cysts that occur in the oral cavity less than 2% of the time. Epidermoid cysts isolated to the uvula are rare. A review of the literature has revealed only three confirmed cases of isolated uvular epidermoid cysts. We present a series of three such cases, two of which presented with significant symptomatology. The diagnosis and management of these unusual lesions will be discussed, as well as the differential diagnosis.

Structure of the musculus uvulae: functional and surgical implications of an anatomic study.

OBJECTIVE: The role of the musculus uvulae in velopharyngeal function, its morphologic status in cleft palate, and its fate in palatoplasty procedures are subjects of controversy. The aims of this investigation were to re-examine this velar muscle to clarify its anatomic characteristics, to analyze its role in speech physiology, and to study the surgical implications of this information for cleft palate repair. METHODS: Its attachments, morphology, and relations were examined in 18 fresh human adult cadavers by detailed dissection under 3.2x magnification and light microscopy. RESULTS: The m…

Projection of cardiovascular afferents to the lateral nodulus-uvula of the cerebellum in rabbits.

Vagal and aortic afferent projections to the nodulus and uvula of the cerebellar vermis were examined in anesthetized and paralysed rabbits. Electrical stimulations of vagal and aortic nerves at a frequency of 1/s produced field potentials in the lateral cortical region of the contralateral nodulus-uvula with a latency of 6.5-19 ms. These potentials were negative in the molecular layer and positive in the granular layer. At a higher stimulation rate (30/s), these potentials were reduced by 60-65% of the control value. These results indicate that the lateral cortical region of the nodulus-uvula…

Carcinoma of the uvula and midline soft palate: indication for neck treatment.

According to common classification and staging systems, tumors of the uvula and soft palate are included in the group of oropharyngeal cancers. As such, the same staging systems apply and therapeutic decisions are made accordingly. Our experience with small tumors of the uvula and midline soft palate has shown that these common rules may not apply in these anatomical sites. A multicenter retrospective study was performed to examine the aspects of presentation and clinical course of tumors of the uvula. Only patients with small tumors, less than 2.0 cm in diameter, were included. Twenty-three c…

Differential mossy fiber projections to the dorsal and ventral uvula in the cat.

The brainstem afferents to the uvula were studied by using retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase in the cat. Findings indicate differential afferent projections to the ventral and dorsal uvula. Major sources projecting to the ventral uvula include the caudal parts of the medial and inferior vestibular nuclei, the x- and f-groups of the vestibular nuclei, the dorsal and central parts of the superior vestibular nucleus, the rostral dorsomedial part of the paramedian nucleus of the pontine nuclei, the caudal part of the prepositus hypoglossal nucleus, and the infratrigeminal nucle…

[Afferent projections to the uvula in the cat. II. Mossy fiber projections].

The mossy fiber projections to the uvula of the cerebellum were studied by means of retrograde axonal transport of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in the cat. Following large and small injections into the uvula, distribution of the labeled cells in the brainstem nuclei was investigated. The results showed different afferent projections between the dorsal and ventral uvula. Major sources projecting to the dorsal uvula were the peduncular, paramedian, and lateral nuclei of the pontine nuclei. Labeled cells found in the pontine nuclei amounted to 81.6% of the total number of labeled cells in cat 1. …
